I’m trying to figure out the best way for my parents and friends in the states to get in touch with me while I’m abroad, and so I’m turning here for help, because I’m totally lost. I basically just want to be able to receive calls from the states on my cell phone without paying a fortune.

My dad upgraded his phone this week so I’ve inherited his old T-Mobile G1, which I believe should work in France. I’m about to call T-Mobile and have it unlocked. This brings me to another question: is there such thing as prepaid data access? I can’t find anything, so I might just end up using it as a phone, or picking up a cheap one to use for a few months.

Any ideas? I figure between Google Voice, Skype and iChat there’s gotta be a way to get this to work.

When I was in Australia in June, Virgin Mobile had a deal for 1 GB of prepaid data for AU$26. Skype Out worked great over 3G.
