I still think it will, and with this tidbit from Apple today, I see it happening by November.

Yes, I know, this is just pure baseless speculation.

Funny cause it's true. What more do you need than an iBook and an iPod? That's your iLife right there.

laugh all you want, with video out, a color screen for digital photos only, home on iPod, the simplicity of the iPod, and the relative size and weight, it moves it into a class of it's own. Some times I don't want the hassle of my PB. When I want to show my relatives my latest iMovie creation, I don't want the little screen, I want to use the 27" TV to show my stuff and I don't want to fuss trying to hook up the laptop to do it.

Ah, but that's why God invented DVD burners.

Only if the persons DVD player is compatible with the DVD you burnt.
It should work almost 100% of the time, whether you use DVD-R or DVD+R. The only issue I could see is if you try to use a burned disc in a very old DVD player. They might have problems with them (DVD+R especially).

Ok, but those are record once discs. I want to make changes and add things and delete things and never have to worry about my familys cheap as DVD player they bought, or didn't buy.
Sounds like you want an OQO (http://www.oqo.com/). I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand myself.

Isn't that the best kind?
i hear you oldmacfan. People know that I want more out of the iPod than is currently offered. I'll keep waiting. If the iPod doesn't go colour soon, then I might crack and spring for an iPod mini at some stage... but I can wait. ;)
Personally, I think this is a gap to be filled by Palm and PocketPC type devices. I started a thread back at .com about this a while ago when IDG predicted the death of the PDA. I'll summarize.
I agree that the PDA under that name is dying. It began with little devices like the "Wizard" (God, if you guys remember that) way back in the 90s. Then the Newton, Palm, PocketPC, etceteras. These offered some pretty core PDA functions, though some of the platforms have grown beyond only providing that.
About two years ago I bought a Sony NX60 Palm. This thing has a 320x480 full colour screen. It can play back flash content, has a WiFi card, memory stick slot, etceteras. I bought it because I digitize a lot of my photography for digital portfolio purposes. So I run a photoshop action that resizes my images to the Palm's native display size (yielding about a 50-60k image) and I drop it all on the memory stick. Instant portfolio. I can play video and flash content on this thing too; it's great.
The only thing holding it back is the fact that Palm has been totally dragging their ass in regards to the evolution of the "personal entertainment handheld". I think something like the oqo, I think it is, is maybe a little too big for me. Because I don't always want to take my laptop with me, so often I'll take my Sony Clié with me, and it rocks.
But looking at what iLife is all about... it's the Macintosh as the hub, connecting all of these other peripherals. You already have the ultimate iLife portable: The iBook. It is the hub. I think you will see Apple begin to release more things like Airport Express to integrate it all, but I doubt you'll see something like the Oqo. Apple admitted to having investigated a handheld, but until they can bring something innovative to that space, and I doubt you'll see that happen anytime soon.
I'll stop being as ass.
Archos (http://www.archos.com/products/fam_photo_video.html?sid=j22k24j2bykys3cbfoy2f2) offers a bunch of products that will do exactly what you want.

Nope, this one is way to gimmicky.

Nope this one gets into having a miniture keyboard.
I want iPod simple. Yes, the drive in this machine will have to be more rugged than the drive in the current iPod. It will have to have a small amount of ram. Also the AV connection to the TV will almost have to be
1/4" phono plugs because that, at least in the U.S., is the most universal connection available.

Something like the Pocket Video Recorder AV480 from Archos whould be really nice, if it were the size of an iPod of course. I would find it much easier to use that to share my work and music than to carry my powerbook around with me. If Apple made something like that, I would be the first one in the store to buy it, even if it was expensive.
Maybe if we talk about it enough the idea will generate some steam of its own - possibly even make it to the Apple drawing boards. That is, presuming it hasn't already been Steve'd off *for life*. ;)
... (am I paraphrasing mandricard or Escher here?): "hope springs eternal" :D
Ah, but that's why God invented DVD burners.
:D
Ah, but that very same logic could be used to dismiss the whole idea of the iPod too. (God invented CD burners too don't ya know).

My 12" PB is my portable iLife: recording studio, drum/rythmn machine, video capturer & editor, capture, catalog and edit digital photos, create DVD-ROMs, and on and on... and it even has a built-in iPod! :D

Too big, too many features, and not simple enough. My idea is to take from my mac and carry with me, not take my mac with me.
I'm with you oldmacfan - I don't necessarily want to unload the laptop from my bag, clear some deskspace, find a power outlet (this battery is on it's last legs) ensure that people can see my screen easily and then launch iMovie, iPhoto or QT just to show something.
I want to be able to take my work (music, calendar, address book, photos, pdfs, etc) with me and have the simplicity of the iPod to display them - on a colour screen on the unit itself and as a connection to a TV! (like you currently can with digital cameras these days). I don't think it is asking too much and I also think it is within the realms of possibility without corrupting or compromising the identifiable style of the iPod greatly. :)
We're beginning to see "Portable Video Players" now. I could see Apple making an "iPod video" sometime. "PVPs" are really big now, though, but hey - so were most HD MP3 players pre-iPod.

Now don't make me go back to AI and pull up my old threads there. This is the first rumor to come close to what I was talking about.

Yes, it is still just a rumor, but it is just one more tidbit to add to the pile.

I really like the idea of a portable device to show photo montages and short videos from. I'll sign up to buy one.
No need to bump old, dead threads when we've already got a brand new one on the subject:
