On a different note: "Apple claims immediate availability of the new iPod, and Hewlett-Packard has confirmed that its HP-branded version of the iPod will be based upon the fourth-generation design, and available in September."
Obviously, Apple is sitting on the 60 GB model because HP will introduce HPods with the current capacity of the Apple iPods. My bet is that Apple will let HP make its Pod announcement, then Apple will unveil the 60 GB as their very own, high end iPod.
Apple will have the mini and the 60 GB exclusively, HP will get the 20 and 40 GB model. That's what I think.

so is the 60gb taking a little extra time because it'll have the colour display? makes sense, you want a significant amount of space to be putting movies and photos on there. i dont think it'll just be a 60gb ver of the same thing.

 You're kidding, right?
The 60 won't have a color screen, none of them do now so it would be stupid for the 60 to get one. Can we say, "grossly overpriced"?
Nothing ever stopped Apple from trying to make a quick buck... I heard the hold-up on the minis was the earplug jacks were failing after about 24 days of use. Just makes static noise after that. Bad design. Don't they test these things?

*measured in monthsThat is probably right on, and it would be a good enough update for most people. There are just a lot of people who don't need more than 4 GB of storage, so pricing the mini within the grasp of more people will keep it selling strongly.
And why not give it a couple new colors. Rid of that gold and blue. :p

Hello? Didn't that Think Secret story from a week or so ago mention "purple, yellow and orange" iPods? Now, at the time, it was supposedly talking about the new 4G iPod, however they printed an update talking about some "confusion" on that front.
Well, common sense tells you that there was "confusion" and that these three colors were talked about in relation to the iPod mini. Think about it: what three common, very popular colors are NOT currently represented in the iPod mini line-up?
Yep...purple, yellow and orange. A total no-brainer. The iconic white of the standard iPod was never in danger of being monkeyed with. These are colors belonging to the aluminum-bodied minis.
I'd bet the farm on this one.
If/when an iPod mini update ever comes, these three cool-ass colors will be added to the existing five. Will make for GORGEOUS web pages, posters and in-store displays too!

Very cool Paul, I like the orange one, but it could stand to be a darker orange.
BTW-I know the thinksecret mix up was about the iPod mini, I was refering to it when I said "maybe they could throw in some new colors too."
All this iPod talk is giving me an itchy credit card finger... must resist urge to purchase a non-colour screen iPod. ;)
btw - Paul - nice work on the colour mock-ups. If I do succumb, it will be in a minor way to a mini iPod - just enough for the repertoire of a few select bands - or a few dozen spoken word CDs perhaps. :\
I'll rip and then port my entire CD collection (and photos etc) to a genuine "big brother" iPod when the colour screens rock up - I can't bring myself to splurge such a significant amount of cash on something that I think is not quite where it should be yet! (if that makes sense)
Nice, Paul. I remember when the iPod minis were first announced - I was all "OMG! I'm gonna get a yellow one!" and then they didn't have it in yellow. :(
Yellow is my favorite color. So if the rumors of the new iPod minis are true, I'll be at my nearest Apple Store, cash in hand, the day they are released - especially if there's a corresponding price drop and/or HD bump. ;)

So how does Apple reason their pricing? The minis are only $50 cheaper that the NEW 20 gig model.

Reason for pricing: profit. Always the way ;)
The reason the minis are only $50 cheaper is due to the fact that they cost more to produce, relatively speaking of course. I'd venture a guess to say that the 4gig drive in the mini is more expensive than the drive in the 20 gig.
The new models are not available in colors...as for size:
Direct from Apple
http://images.apple.com/ipod/images/specscallouts20040719.jpg
So you're looking at a .07 inch difference in thickness, .5 inch difference in height, and .4 inch difference in width. Not all that much larger. I'm really excited about getting mine :)
Sweet. They look almost identical to me. I wish they'd have that nice silver/metal finish on the new iPods though. I wonder why they chose not to offer it yet. Any thoughts on plastic vs. metal casings?
DMBand0026
2004-07-23, 13:35
Plastic vs. Aluminum (by the way, it is aluminum, not metal...just to clarify that for you.) is mostly to distinguish between the iPod and the mini right now. The iPod has such wide recognition due in large part to its unique clean design and bright white color. Apple would be stupid to change that drastically.
The shell of the mini is a very smart, very durable design. I would hope to see the whole lineup move to this in the future.
In the mean time, I look forward to receiving my new iPod this coming Monday. :)

you forgot weight...3.6 oz for mini, 5.6 and 6.2 for iPod 20 and 40
so what is the sweet spot right now for an iPod??
since i have a 3G model, i think i might get the mini for running, biking and use at the gym...
if i didn't already have an iPod, i might go for the 20 gig model instead....
of course the wait (as opposed to the weight) might also be a factor
iPod 20 and 40 ship within a couple of days
iPod mini ships in a freakin month!!
hoping the iPod 4G models steal from the mini so apple can catch up some

Hey, way to go for that shunned color! :D
I read somewhere that the gold and green were the least popular sellers (not that there is a "least popular" anything about the iPod mini, it seems).
I'd be curious to see if talk of those other three colors panned out over the next month or two. I'd love to see...well, we all know what color.
IMO, the iPod "sweet spot" is best represented by the new click-wheel 20GB: more capacity than the mini (plus, they actually exist) but slimmer and lighter than the 40GB. In fact, I was kinda stunned seeing a 3G 40GB last weekend in Alpharetta. They're noticeably thicker, aren't they? I had no idea, as I'd never really paid attention to any model but mine.
If my current iPod fell off a cliff, or got eaten by a bear, and I had to go buy an iPod this weekend...I'd have to go with the new 20GB.
it's not easy being green ;)
why isn't a regular iPod convenient for running or working out?
i never run with music (because where i run, i need my ears to be vigilant for punks and hooligans) i got my wife a mini, and she likes it so much that i was thinking about getting one, or a 20g.
is there a difference when exercising?

with the belt clip, my iPod 3G would freeze up at about 20 minutes due to the shaking it took i guess...since then i have bought a waist belt thingy and no more freezing...so the iPod 3G is fine...
but the mini is smaller and lighter and i could wear it on my arm with the arm band (the waist belt thingy is nice, but still kinda large)...plus i surely don't need 15 gigs of songs for an hour of running or two hours of biking
plus it is so sexy looking
do i need it? nah, but my birthday is soon and i like gadgets...
g
so for you super, i might suggest a mini...if you go the 4G i would get something other than the belt clip to hold it close to your body...the tighter the better...the down side of this is that where i wear the waist belt tends to collect sweat....

:wow: Thats awsome!
I have mixed feelings on whether I prefer the 4G iPod or iPod mini. I mean, now that the iPod has the clickwheel, the wheel is "centered" in the unit, y'know what I mean? Looks waaay better than the 2/3G iPod. What you think of the grey wheel is your preference, but I like it - it's nice contrast, and it makes the iPod look sorta "futuristic" in a way I find hard to describe - I s'pose it could be just that it's new, but I didn't feel that way about the 2G iPod.
But the iPod mini is smaller, and comes in colors. If it came in Yellow, it'd win hands down. If we were still talking about the 3G iPod, it'd win hands down. But I like how the 4G looks a lot...so, unless (until?) Apple makes a Yellow iPod mini, the iPod wins in my book.

Well, I don't think that the iPod is better looking than the mini at all, in fact, the mini is absolutely gorgeous. The mini is so much sleeker, which is the perfect word for it, absolutely sleek and stylish. It is probably safe to say that the mini was created to be completely about style and not really about substance.
Which is why I bought the 4G iPod and sold my mini. Selling the mini was hard for me to actually do, I loved it, perfect for running and wonderful to hold and look at. The capacity just held me back, I wanted all of my music with me, so I "upgraded."
Apple should work really hard to get rid of the differentiation of the iPod and iPod mini, and just make it a single line again. In a perfect world, the iPod would look exactly like the mini and come in a range of capacities from 4GB on up. The only difference in iPods would be based on capacity, which in turn, would be the basis for pricing.
The iPod-From 4GB to 40GB and all in the same enclosure. It would be awesome that way.

Seriously, look at the picture there, with the 3G, 4G, then mini. That comparisson looks to me as if it is a refinement from the oldest iPod to the newest.
I have now figured out what has thrown me off about the new iPod. It looks as if it was the design that spawned the mini, not the other way around. :(
I've never held an iPod mini, so I suppose I can't compare sizes very well. Whenever I go to any Apple retailer, they never have any. :(
If I were buying an iPod, it'd be the mini, just because I wouldn't mind the colors, yellow or no, and I'd never need more then 4 gigs of space anyway. And I don't hate how it looks or anything, I just prefer the 4G iPod a wee bit more. But opinions are opinions, and we're all entitled to our own...
Maybe the fact that I've never owned an iPod before, and you (I'm assuming) have, might have something to do with it. You might be tired of white iPods, but just remember, I'm tired of cheap-looking silver CD players. :(

I have owned 3 iPods. I owned the original, I owned the mini, and now the 4G. I played with the 3G extensively, enough to know how the look and feel compares to the mini. In my opinion, the mini exemplifies what the iPod should be. No question about it, the mini (in my mind) is the standard that Apple should follow and make the regular iPod more like in the future...and it appears they are doing just that.
I just hope the 2 product iPod line goes away.

Yeah, I said that months ago...that the iPod line just become a single line, based on the design of the mini, in a crapload of colors (the current five, the three rumored new ones of yellow, purple and orange, an "old school" white and even a black to satisfy various goofy people into black computer stuff). ;)
I realize, however, that would be an inventory/stocking nightmare, plus I don't think drives that small come in the large capacities needed to take over for the regular iPod line.
But, in my fantasy world, that all wouldn't matter and you could buy an iPod in a 6, 20 and 40GB size - each in one of the 10 colors listed above - and in the body style of the iPod mini.
Maybe someday when the drives exist and Apple figures out a way to tailor manufacturing to respond to trends so there won't be crates of unbought yellow and black iPods sitting around gathering dust, while, at the same time, decent people - with taste and style - aren't having to wait four months to get their hands on the righteous orange model.

Forget for a minute, forget that the iPod exists. Pretend you were using the same portable music player you had (if you had one) 4 years ago. How did you have your music with you? How many CD's did you carry with you? How many did you want to be able to use?
Ahh, thank God for the iPod. But to me, it isnt the iPod's capacity that draws me to it anymore. I am beyond that, I have no desire or REAL need to have as many songs as 10,000 in my pocket. It costs a lot of money to do that, it also costs pocket space. While the iPod may be small in comparison to portable CD players or most other "comparable" MP3 players, it just isnt a mini.
The mini will be the best selling product in Apple's history, I have no doubts about it. I think the mini is being overlooked, simply because it gets compared in terms of storage capacity. Think about this for a second: it has as much internal storage as the original iMac did!
The mini is effectively going to be Apple's next iMac, this time in comparison to success, not storage capacity.
$249 is too much money to pay for what it is? Look at what it is NOT before you go all negative on me. It is NOT big, it is NOT expensive COMPARED to other iPod's, it is NOT heavy, it does NOT take up room, it is NOT just white, it does NOT have pitiful storage capacity.
This new iPod mini lacks so many things, that it is perfect. And before christmas, it is going to lose something else: $50 off its price tag. Of course, I didnt care about the price, because I paid for what is isnt, as much as I paid for what it is.
Never before have I been so amazed by a "mini" iteration of a product. This new iPod has everything that just about everyone needs. It is interesting to me that people talk up the idea of a low priced tower computer, this is the exact same thing as that except in digital music player form. It appeals to the masses who honestly, could care less about a 9,000 song difference. It is all about the $250 dollar difference, for $250 dollars less...look what you get...and also, look what you DONT get.

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons for the delays here in The States is the fact that they needed to stock up overseas. I'd be willing to bet that every single Mini was gone the day they came out in Japan.
I hope we don't see more delays as a result of international shipments though :\
I don't want this to come out wrong - but aren't the Japanese known to be very "mini" conscious?
I thought I read somewhere that Apple's best selling PowerBook in Japan (pre OS X) was the 2400c model - a stripped down sub-notebook. They seem to love miniturisation, so it seems sensible (going on past records) that Apple ensures they are well stocked for this market!
Damn - the more I think about it, the more I'm tempted to splurge some dough on an iPod mini myself.
:in the throes of death voice: "... must ... wait ... for ... colour ... screen" ;)
You're perfectly right, Mac+. Japan is pretty much the opposite of America, where many people tend to think "bigger is better." I've heard this is because of Japan's tight living conditions, but I doubt it, because a 1" difference between the iPod and iPod mini won't make even the smallest appartment THAT much more cramped. I think it's just part of their attitude. They're really into stuff looking nice, there. They also dig colors, so in many ways, I think Apple designed the iPm with Japan in mind.

I like the colours of the iPod mini too (even though the sterility of the white and chrome is "the bomb" in an iconic way). However, I'm intrigued to see if Apple unleashes a sports model a'la the yellow which was reserved for the Sony Sports Walkman range. Of course, they may just prefer to spend their R&D $ on improving the feature set and battery life, leaving it to 3rd party developers to come up with the Sports cocoon or shell! That would proabably be the more sensible option - but if the iPod division is to really infiltrate society at large to an even greater degree, then I can see designs embracing fashion/lifestyles and catering to niché markets in order to dominate a variety of consumer demographics. Stranger things have happened. ;)
Idunno - I don't think we'll see an "iPod sport" any time soon, but it is feasible. I think the iPod mini has some of that "sporty" attitude, to it, though - it comes with an armband, etc. I think an iPod sport now would be rather redundant.
But Apple should definitely make a yellow iPm. You're perfectly right there. :D

Hey, why wait for the shuffle feature ? you just have to click the play button once to start a shuffle in all your songs ! (shuffle mode has to be activated)

gI bought a 1G the 2nd day they came out, and I've never regretted it. 5 gigs is just enough for a day trip and/or weekend drive. Perfect.
I bought a mini for the gf at Xmas (didn't show up until Jan 15 :grumble: ) and it is absofuckinglutely PERFECT. Svelt and Sexy...matches my gf to a t. :)
/// On a little side note: my 1G was absolutely mortified that it couldn't download 'Solitaire' offerered in the 2G software update. :(
School is over and boredom has set in...must....get.....life......
I was bored at work. It was a stangely slow night for a Wednesday. fruits of my boredom (http://www.luser.info/iPod/iPod7.jpg)
....must...get..sleep.. . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

...I made a 3D mockup of the white iPod (printouts from the QTVR), engraved and all, and created a card around it. I told her something 'new' was probably going to be announced at MW, so if she wanted to wait I would get her whatever new thingy came out. Of course, she went for the mini (blue). :)
I'm totally off on the shipping though. I remember it being 2 weeks later than quoted, but the exact date escapes me now that I'm more sober than I was last night. ;)

just ordered my iPod mini...almost got the silver, but decided to stick up for green...now comes the long wait
luckily i am loving shuffle on my iPod 3G, so i don't mind the older software/firmware on the mini
1000 songs and shuffle should be great...
g
As soon as Apple announces the yellow iPod mini, I'll be there, at the Apple store, in the front of the line...I hope I have the money then, because I know I'll want to get it ASAP...I've actually never had an iPod before...so it should be cool.

yeah, that's cool !
in fact, you can press the play button anywhere, it will automatically launch a shuffle play in all the songs displayed in the menu or sub-menu you are ;)
EmC nice work! It's just a pity for us Aussies that the Southern Cross stars are obscured by the click wheel. :\ - but I still like the concept heaps! :)

i assume the back would have the whole flag uninterrupted by screen or click wheel
g
... ahh good point - but heck, who am I kidding? By the time Apple got around to running with those designs (and opening an iTMS in Australia), we may very well have seceded from our sovereign rule and have a different flag entirely. ;)

Absolutely. :)
So do the iPods only play files from iTunes or can you convert all of your mp3s to play on it. I read an article somewhere that seemed to say you couldn't which sounds terrible...
The iPod supports MP3, AAC, WAV, and AIFF. iTunes allows you to convert existing Windows Media files to AAC so they too can be played on the iPod.

As long as the WMA's aren't protected.
