Time Magazine has called the 4th Generation iPod its "Gadget of the Week" and has said some pretty wild and interesting things about the new unit. Mainly this: If you're thinking about finally getting an iPod, now's your chance. If you're thinking about handing down your current iPod and getting a new one with a bigger hard drive, now's your chance. But don't feel pressured into upgrading, because no major bragging rights will go to the possessors of these latest iPods. That is, not yet.

Check out www.macminute.com for their link to this article, titled "4G iPod, more than meets the eye?"
So, what could these extra capabilities be?

That's my opinion. The Time article seems to be written to give the impression of insider knowledge, but lacks any such knowledge (or evidence thereof).

Umm, I don't think so, Mr. Gold N. Staph. You have a mobile phone for that... :err: :p
Anyway, has anyone else noticed Apple's PR photos of the new 4th-G iPods make the LCD screen look somewhat different? Is this reflected with the thing in real life, i.e. do they have a better screen, or is it just for good PR?

They're apparently now backlit in a slightly bluish hue (including in real life), but I haven't seen one
perhaps Messiahtosh can tell us when his new one arrives?

The iPod is in my pocket, I can tell you that it is a blue-ish backlight. Nothing special, maybe slightly better than the older version's screens.

Well it's obviously some software/firmware update of some sort. I think the iPod, physically, is pretty much what it is. Nothing new or special there, other than the click wheel re-design.
So maybe they know Apple is going to give it some snazzy new software feature.
The ability to stream iCards? :p
But seriously, is there any chance at all whatsover - with that screen sporting a new blue-ish tint - that the silly thing is actually color capable, and a future software/firmware update from Apple will "activate" this capability, and Apple - on the same day - will release iPhoto bridge software, treating iPhoto on your Mac like iTunes, transferring your photos over to the iPod, allowing the iPod - in addition to being the best digital music player - the ultimate digital wallet?
Hmmmmm?
Okay, I'm dreaming...but it takes stupid posts like these to push mankind and technology forward. All visionaries and genius types get laughed at and ridiculed, why should I be any different?
:p
Remember all the talk of the video iPod? Remember all the talk about an Apple video projector? The new iPod is both. That's why the screen looks different. With the right software, it will shine a perfect HD picture on your wall. It's the little trick Steve has up his sleeve, waiting for the day Janus arrives. ;)

Don't think there is any wifi/infrared capabilities in the 4g ipod. They ripped one apart in the article below and I can't see anything. I'm sure they would have reported it if there was.

The part of my post about Steve's trick up the sleeve for when Janus arrives actually sounds like him. The iPod is selling great just as it is, but when the time comes to steal news away from Janus, he pulls out the new stuff. Am I the only one who noticed how much wind was knocked out of Real's sails by the Motorola announcement? I think Tiger will play out the same way. He will show off more new features strategically, when the time is right. Back to the iPod: Steve once said that a small device that could play video on a TV (as opposed to a small screen) might be desirable. If the new pods (with a new dock and software) can display photos and video on a TV, they will probably only work with iLife. That means Mac only. That alone is a strategic reason to delay the features. Play your cards the right way and it seems the Mac adds special features to the iPod. Play them incorrectly and the headlines all say how the new iPods are crippled on Windows.

Argue with that. There's no way that a respected journalist in a very well respected news magazine would write that without having at least some information that we don't. There's something else in there, just not sure what yet.
Oh man thats hilarious, would be cool if some future software/hardware allowed you to display pics/video on tv :smokey:
Yah, an iPhoto player function; it would be fairly easy to implement technically. A folder on the iPod, which loads as many pictures that will fit into memory. As the slideshow progresses more pics are fed into memory, just like song files are queued.
Video is a little more challenging to balance file size, picture quality and battery life.

http://www.portalplayer.com/news-and-events/photo_jukebox.htm
Most interesting...
Las Vegas, Nev., January 8, 2004 PortalPlayer, Inc., the company that enabled the fast-growing music jukebox market, today announced a new development platform - the Personal Media Player: Photo Edition. The development platform includes a system-on-chip (SOC), Firmware Development Kit (FDK) and Software Development Kit (SDK) for customers to quickly bring to market a new category of products called "Personal Media Players." These battery-powered, hard-disk-drive-based devices will allow end users to capture, store, play and display their entire music, album art, and photo collections on a single device that fits in their pockets.
Well, someone at AI claims to have confirmation (http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?threadid=44682)

Most interesting... Yep, and apparently what PortalPlayer offers in public plans may be more relevant to the specific intentions of Apple than either company has been willing to indicate. In this Wired interview (http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,64286,00.html), Ben Knoss states that Apple own a majority stake in PortalPlayer. Neither Apple nor PortalPlayer seem to be very keen on discussing ownership, so it's hard to confirm if it's really a subsidiary. One can, however, see that in older PP press releases they used to include a list of major investors, and in later communications they do not mention ownership at all.
Remember the Music item in the top level of the new iPod menu? Isn't that a clue that something else is coming?
Man, I had blown off the idea of getting a new iPod, but now I might get one anyway. I've got a lot of money in the bank AND I have 25 extra hours of work coming up in the next week or two (above and beyond my normal schedule).
Gimme another week, I'll crack eventually.

that suggest otherwise. If there was WiFi built in, the only spot for an antenna would be along the inside of the plastic half of the clamsell, and it ain't there.

Would it take anything special to make a wireless adapter for the iPod or could they just make something that plugs into the iPod and update the firmware to take advantage of it?

Would it take anything special to make a wireless adapter for the iPod or could they just make something that plugs into the iPod and update the firmware to take advantage of it? Yep, it would be straightforward to do an external encoder/transmitter deal, and even preferable because it could have its own battery. The iPod should even have enough horsepower to do the lossless encoding itself, which would be nice for keeping the cost down for the peripheral.
The only firmware change I see a real need for (other than the possible encoder, which for all we know could already be in there) would be something that can grab a list of addresses from the adapter and display them in the iPod's menu for choosing an AirPort with ZeroConf.
onlyafterdark
2004-07-29, 20:13
Then I guess a wireless adapter is a real possibility. Thats pretty cool. Now the only questions that remain are whether it is worth while for apple (or a third party) to develop this adapter and what it would be used for.

What I'd want (not that Apple necessarily have any intention of building such a thing) would not be simply a remote to run iTunes on a computer. That wouldn't be cool enough.
It might allow the iPod to beam songs directly to one of those nice little AirPort boxes, nice for parties and stuff where you don't want your little toy to get demolished.
Also, and this would be the fun part, it could act sort of like an AirTunes receiver, letting you listen to songs shared by computers on the LAN, sort of like what iTunes allows now. It would be fun in a dorm setting, maybe useful in a library (Duke will want to some up with something practical sooner or later), or in the future could provide a whole different sort of digital radio (music on demand, presumably with ads forced in every x minutes http://forums.applenova.com/images/smilies/eek.gif ), if public wireless networks with decent bandwidth ever get off the ground for real.

Home on iPod. Anybody think this will see the light of day soon or will Apple wait until Tiger to release this.I seriously doubt that will be happening any time soon. But you should know that internally the new iPod is a ground-up reconstruction, and its really compelling applications the ones that very well might get the goat of anyone unable or unwilling to upgrade are still secret. So if there are "untold secrets" around the corner for the iPod, as in accessories and such, I guess Apple is waiting for a reason. They probably figure it best to put out the iPod and let everyone who is going to buy one anyway get the first rush. Then wait unitl demand goes down to pull in the maybes and the "nah my 3 G's working fine" crowd with some cool new clip on device??

Yeah, I think the idea of the AirTunes remote makes the most sense. 4 more hours of battery added would probably do it. I dont know about the photo thing... not terribly interesting to me. And I dont see it worth the hype time gave it (if in fact thats actually what they were talking about.)

I won't say much, as I'm new to posting but I thought it could help some people out. We are nearly complete with stabilizing the 802.15.3 protocol, and it legally will retain the Firewire trademark. the initial specifications have been crunched and this is a very exciting new future for wireless computing. The chips are shipping to a few select partners in a beta form (and don't try to find them, they are masked as an everyday electronic micro and do not emit any RF signals, yet; but they can be flashed very easily when the code is more solid and approved (and when the host machines have been announced).
Another informative thought for you to all digest. How do you think that Apple and Motorola plan on transfering music between the new iTunes store and the new Motorola transflash enabled telephones? BT would only annoy people, and what is the point of a cable? This adaptation of wireless technology was a much easier transformation than ever thought.
Enjoy.
Wireless Firewire, eh? Maybe that would explain why the people who dissected the new iPod couldn't find anything extra - it would have been contained within the Firewire controller chip, right? How big of a power draw is it? I know that WiFi drains batteries very quickly, but if you only needed a short range signal it might help. Then again, the bandwidth must be very high, and that may also eat battery life.
Interesting info, if it's true.
Could HP's new printer for the iPod be a clue? ;)

How do you figure? As I see it it's only capable of grayscale, no colors. Maybe it can get up to 2, maybe 4 grays, but not color.

I do think they will announce/release some software download that will, in effect, take the governor off the new 4G iPod and we'll be all wowed at some "hidden" capability. Maybe tomorrow, even.
There's probably some little AirPort Extreme mini card stuck in there somewhere, just waiting to be turned loose in some way (a remote for controlling iTunes or streaming from the iPod or something equally neat).

Well, we can only hope. I for sure am :)

Look closely. Even with the backlight off, the screen displays blue and black. Black is in the "elapsed time" bar in the now playing screen, blue is the rest.
Any word on when the 6 gig mini iPods might be making an appearance? Maybe by X-Mas?...

One would hope. But are they still stuggling to get the original 4GB models everywhere they need to be?
Is it to the point you can walk in to Best Buy or an Apple Store and get an iPod mini in your choice of color, or are the supplies still tight and backordered?
I'm not wondering about a 6GB iPod mini as much as I'm wondering about what that Toshiba 60GB thing was for. I assume it's the iPod, right? Just a future bump?
The dork in me likes to imagine it being something else entirely... ;)
A little e-mail/surfing pad thing would be so neat.

I sure agree that that the 60GB device is what I am waiting for...my iTunes files are growing beyond the 20GB threshold that I had made for myself and I'd only get an iPod if music took up less than half the harddrive space. Maybe my music will plateau somewhere around 23GB's but I'm starting to think more about audiobooks and getting the entire Mozart catalogue!?!?!?
