Got people who are looking to buy Intel Macs if it's possible to compile Linux apps' source code. Natively, no Boot Camp, emulation, or even Fink. Are the issues involved discussed anywhere or this too new?
TIA,
Chas

Welcome to Applenova.
You can try to compile apps, but you'll need to get all the dependencies, including X11 and everything that goes along with it.
What kind of apps are you looking to use, and why is Fink not an option? fink installs natively, and so does DarwinPorts (http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/).

Doesn't Apple provide an X11 implementation? I believe it's found under Applications -> Utilities. I think you have to install the developer tools and check the X11 SDK selections.
Correct, Apple does offer X11, but a lot of software libraries and various dependencies needed for Linux software still must be ported in order to work on Mac OS X. Mac OS X, after all, is not just another distro of Linux. That's why projects like fink exist.
What exactly is wrong with using fink or darwinports, ChasmoeBrown?

you seem to be confused. fink does compile the source natively. are you suggesting running a linux kernel pure, without osx?

Not only confused, but obviously daft as well.
I had looked at fink and DarwinPorts before and they didn't seem to be more than repositories for ports already done. :\
So I'm having a look 'round back and we're fresh out of parrots, but I will keep looking.
On top of all this the person originally asking now doesn't want to install the OS X Development Tools. . .
