I have recently purchased a powerbook g4 with the superdrive and have a question.

The system profiler says it is a cd-rw/dvd-rw but the apple site says it is a dvd-r

Which is correct? and what are the true speeds of the drive? is it a 4x dvd or 8x?

Thanks in advance for your help.

They're both correct. CD-RW/DVD-RW is the "long" version of what the drive is... that is, it'll burn CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-Rs, and DVD-RWs. Apple uses "DVD-R" on their site because it's shorter and simpler, and possibly because they really hate DVD-RWs (they firmware-disabled the DVD-RW feature in earlier Superdrive-equipped Macs, for no known reason).

The specifications for how fast your drive is are on the Apple site. Assuming you have one of the latest models (1.33 GHz or 1.5 GHz), your Superdrive will use these speeds:

Write DVD-R: 4x
Write DVD-RW: 2x (Again, not mentioned by Apple, even in the specifications)
Write CD-R: 16x
Write CD-RW: 8x
Read DVD: 8x
Read CD: 24x

EDIT: Moved to Genius Bar.
