I guess Napster decided to trump Apple by just starting in the UK. I think Napster is still sticking to their 'end of summer' prediction for the rest of Europe.
Maybe this will spur apple to get the iTMS out the door a bit faster through out the world.
This could make Napster look really bad when Apple releases iTMS Europe 2 months after Napster and outsells them in the first week.

so could apple start in the UK also and then expand into europe...would hate to give napster too much of a head start

So when can we expect iTMS to debute in europe???? Starting to get a little impatient here :p
And, with my usual luck the iTMS will probably debute in most other countries than Norway this year.
As we don't yet have the ipod minis in the UK could there be a double "launch" ? They are due in July so that might fit. If so, I don't think the time lag with Napster will hurt much. I sense that people over here are much more aware of Apple and in particular the iPod now so a bit of thought over the hows and where's of the launch might pay dividends.
A media campaign possibly even fronted by a rare UK appearance by the Great One would ensure a strong start.

The "store" would probably get a lot of press over here, not just in the IT press, but also mainstreem. Combining the two releases would almost certainly lead to increased sales of the iPod mini.

i am just wondering if they can deliver enough minis, if not, that would almost directly lead to a debacle.

Unless you believe that the big supply problem was a ploy to get that audio jack problem fixed.

I'm sure Hitachi would be interested in that theory, only it's not true. Why would Hitachi defend Apple's supply issues when Hitachi is not at fault? :P

Napster Europe's pricing is so ridiculous that it just *has* to be boycotted. Jeez.
oxfam went live with their music store today in the UK -- being an oxfam supporter i thought they might get some of my money alongside iTMS (when it arrives here)
it uses OD2 and of course is windows only, so can't even get into it. load of c**p
