View Full Version : Transferring data to new mac?

Hi everybody.
So, after the longest three weeks of my life, my new powerbook is coming tomorrow. (Supposed to arrive, anyway!)
I was therefore wondering if anybody could give me some advice regarding transferring data to the new computer?
My last computer was an ibook running the latest OS (can never remember the order those cats come in, alas). It's broken with a power problem but I had copied the entire computer onto my firewire drive.
So is there a simple way to get all the old stuff onto the new one aside from dragging individual files? What I want to get is all my docs, music, mail messages, photos, apps and settings? but probably not stored in a 'last computer' folder, rather in my new user file if that is possible.
Any advice on how to do this would be much appreciated.
many many thanks in advance,
all best wishes
Simon

Your new machine comes with a tool to do exactly that. I'm not sure how it will work with a FireWire drive, but since it requires you to boot the old machine into FireWire Target Disk Mode, I suspect it will work perfectly.

Great. Thank you.
Now, if they only could have built it with a piece of software to make the thing arrive on time, then they'd really be on to something!
Thanks again

Hi again.
Well it finally arrived safe and sound!
unfortunately couldn't get the automattic tool to transfer the stuff across though - probably because there are a few different computer set ups on the firewire drive.
so what i'm stuck with now is:
i have a user folder on a firewire drive that i want to make my main user folder on the new machine.
any ideas how to do this neatly?

many many thanks
simon
