Think Simple...

iPhoto on Mac's will only enhance the experience. Photos or folders of photos can be added with a simple drag and drop on Windows side. No need to port iPhoto.

I hope iPhoto isn't ported, that would just give Windows users another reason to not switch to Macs. If they get another great piece of software, why do they need the hardware?

You think iTunes and iPhoto are the sole reason? They still won't have iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, Keynote, Safari, Sherlock, Final Cut stuff, etc.

I don't care one way or the other (I'm sure a third-party company is in place to help handle the Windows-based photo thing anyway), but I don't think two popular programs, dealing with things most people use in their day-to-day lives - music and photos - is going to hurt.

It wouldn't bum me out to see a Windows iPhoto. But I'm not expecting it either.

iPhoto isn't even that necessary for Windows. On the Mac it fills a special niche - importing and organizing your pictures. But Windows has those features built into the OS. When you plug in your digital camera, it asks if you'd like to import your pictures, which folder to move them to, and whether it should erase the camera's contents afterwards. Rather than organizing your photos in a library, you just put them in whatever folder structure you want. It works out pretty well because Windows is much better at browsing pictures kept in regular folders than OS X.

iPhoto's main advantage is the minor photo editing features it offers. But those are pretty spartan. It really wouldn't bring any advantages to Windows users. Also, remember that they'd have to sell it for a certain amount. $50 is way too much, but if they sold it for anything less, then Mac users would complain that Windows users are now able to buy iPhoto as a standalone app for less. So Apple could choose to either sell the individual iApps for maybe $19 each, or they could port all of iLife to Windows and sell it for $49 regardless of platform (not gonna happen of course), or they could just not port iPhoto. Windows users already have iPhoto-level importing and organization built into the OS. If they want easy photo editing, there are plenty of solutions available for under $50, and iPhoto really wouldn't be competitive.

Porting iPhoto to Windows won't necessarily hurt Apple, but it won't help either. So, why bother?

There's a clear purpose for developing iTunes on Windows: the iPod. It's a cash cow. It is a huge boon to Apple, bringing increased revenues, new users, and incredible press.

What reason is there for iPhoto on Windows?

Oh yeah, that's the other thing. The iPod has a contact list and calendar feature, but those just use standard formats like vCard for their information. If you have a Mac you get the nice little extra feature of iSync to automatically move your contacts from Address Book to the iPod's "Contacts" folder, but it shouldn't be hard to export all your vCards from a Windows machine to that same folder. Not sure if the calendar format is a semi-universal one or not, but with the pictures, I'm guessing there will just be a folder on the iPod called "Photos" that you can move standard picture formats into. Having iPhoto will make it easier, but I doubt you'll have to own a Mac to take advantage of the feature.

No, it would come with your $499 iPod, just like iLife comes with a new Mac. I don't think Apple will make iPhoto for Windows, however. Getting photos to your iPod in Windows would likely be a drag and drop thing, as mentioned.

The iPod software will have to be updated to present photo slide shows on a TV. Wouldn't it be nice if all 4G iPods could do that via a software update?

edit: I suppose the function requires a brand new video-out port, which current 4G iPods don't have.

They could just let other software on windows work. Something like google's Picasa (I think that's what it's called). It's basically just a big rip off of iPhoto anyway. Not saying it's bad, though. It's what I use when I have to use a PC.
