Hello all,
does anyone know if they sell replacement dvd drives for the imac G3 400 speed. My current one requires me to jam a cd or dvd in and when trying to eject it, the cd would come out just enough for me to extract it with a tweezer. Thanks much for the help, and if this is the worng forum, my apologies.
Yes, this belongs in the Genius Bar.
I think you can install a notebook's slot-loading drive, though. They're around $70 from NewEgg. I saw three slot-loading Combo drives available there:
Samsung (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-151-053&depa=1)
Toshiba (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-130-023&depa=1)
Lite-On (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-559&depa=1)
Nu (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-154-015&depa=1)
Panasonic (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-133-003&depa=1)
I don't know if any of these will be natively supported by OS X, but you can check the drive compatibility database at www.xlr8yourmac.com to check.
The Panasonic is the most likely to be compatible, since Apple uses that mechanism in PowerBooks.
I put a PC notebook DVD drive into my iMac 333 and it could use it (and play DVD's), but it can't boot off the drive

I know this doesn't fix your drive, but it might make removing the disc just a tad easier in the meanwhile.
