Ati showed the X800 on a Powermac G5 driving the monster 30" display. If Nvidia can't supply us the 6800 at least Ati can supply us with the X800 Mac version. They quietly announced it at New York this week. The X800 has an advantage over the 6800. It takes up one slot instead of two like the 6800 because of cooling for the 6800. Price and availability is not yet. I think it will become available with the next rev of Powermacs.

This is good to hear... I really like ATi... not just because they are Canadian.

Interesting. The X800XT and the 6800 Ultra are a very close match, but it looks like ATI wants to go for a slightly different use for their card. While the 6800 has two dual-link DVI ports (yeah, that means TWO 30" cinema displays), the X800 will be going after people who want a super high end video card but don't want to give up their nice ADC display. No dual 30" cinemas, but is that seriously a major concern? I don't really like ADC, but it's nice that G5 owners won't have to ditch their beautiful older ADC display in order to get a top of the line video card.

Competition is always welcome. Its good to hear that the G5s will have reletively new ATI stuff too (finally).

The fact that it doesnt run dual 30" displays isnt that big of a deal. I mean, how many people out there can afford all that? This just takes the pressure off of Nvidia so that people who want the option of having a 30" while having the awsome power of the new tech in GPUs dont have to wait around for Nvidia cards to show up. Plus there is the fact that it doesnt take up two slots inside the G5. Its a win-win in my books.

What I think is funny is that you guys talk about "not having to wait for nVidia" when the 30" displays also aren't shipping yet. It's been... hmm... three and a half months since they were announced and still no GeForce 6800s or 30" displays.

Actually some people at ai have recieved their 6800's. I am sure we will see apple shipping the 30" displays around the next 2 weeks.
