View Full Version : Hurrah! (Apple Store in Exeter)
All you Britkids, the spikeh-apple-curse has finally been lifted; we're getting an Apple store in Exeter! No word yet on the size of the store, but it's going into the new Princesshay shopping complex, so hopefully it'll be a big 'un.
You can apply for jobs online now through the Apple website. I've applied for a job as a Specialist. God help us all.

What they don't know, doesn't hurt them. :p
As long as Spikeh consigns himself to a role of lurker, or get himself a new alias, it'll just obscure the trail for the Apple-gestapo bloodhounds. :D

They still haven't figured out which of us is Steve Jobs yet, so I'd say he has a fighting chance of slipping through the net! :D

I'm Steve Jobs.
I was Bruce Willis yesterday, but got bored with it.
:p
Man, I get so jealous when I hear of places getting Apple stores...knowing I'll never have one here. I'd settle for a CompUSA or one of those Best Buy or Circuit City locations that carry Macs. Anything that sold Macs locally...this driving to Atlanta or Knoxville every 2-3 months for my "fix", or to see new goodies in person a week or so after a big keynote, is for the birds!
We don't even have an independent reseller here. Nothing. Not a single Mac for sale anywhere in Chattanooga. I couldn't get up and grab my keys, right this minute, and go buy a Mac here in town tonight, no matter how much money I was willing to pay. How sad...I hate that.
:o
Yeah, I know..."waaaaaaaah".

Quite gutted that the Exeter store will open at around the same time I move to cardiff
I know someone involved in the housing developments of Princesshey, so got them on the job to see if they can find out where and when! There was news that Pricesshey could make news of being one of the first shopping complex's to open with no floor space left, meaning the Apple Store in theory should open this Autumn... i'm well up for trying to get an Apple T-shirt when it first opens!

That sucks, my small town of 48,000* in the middle of Kansas has a full independent Apple reseller with education discounts. If I wanted to by a Mac I could walk a few blocks and pick one up :p :D
*actually closer to 80,000 people in the actual city at any given time

We had one place here, but it closed nearly three years ago. It was more of a service center anyway...they didn't even have stuff for sale, other than some accessories and magazines. No actual Macs or other Apple hardware.
We do have two Best Buy stores, two (soon to be three) Target stores and a Circuit City. Hopefully our Best Buy will be one of those stores that eventually sells Macs. I hear they're doing that in quite a few of them, slowly growing the program.
I figure about the time it's slated for Chattanooga, Apple and Best Buy will get into a big beef again and they'll pull the plug on it...
:D
Have you considered the remote possibility that Steve Jobs just plain doesn't like you and will see to it that you will never ever live in vicinity of any Apple store or dealers as long as he is in power? He could be holding grudges what with you stealing his thunder with your awesome mockup or two. ;) :p
Wow! That new shopping mall in Princesshay is what knocked down the building the first ever Extreme Sport Cafe was in... Ahhh memories...

I had thought about that, yes. Unfortunately I'll need a job next year more than I'll need (public) discussion with Apple nerds :( I'm sure we can come to some kind of arrangement though... :p
Hope you get it Spikeh! :)

I heard Autumn too. Here's hoping. Why the move to 'Diff? Surely only University can make someone want to go to Wales... :p

So Apple employees, even just retail ones, can't post or belong to apple related websites/forums?

It's been a while, but that's what I remember. I think the official word is "not to participate". The legal merit and the enforceability are questionable.
OK that is good to know. I am on the summer job search right now. ;)

Hey, Paul, what the *heck* does the word 'Chattanooga' mean, anyway?
I'm sure it must be a native American word, right? So it must actually 'mean' something.
Like, doesn't 'Chicago' mean *stinking cabbage* or *stinking swamp*... or something??? :D haha ;)
Maybe chattanooga means "stinking bible-belt, Mac-less town". :D
No?
Awww... shucks. ;)
So, Exeter, but not Newcastle Upon Tyne?
As in Exeter (pop 117,000) but not Newcastle Upon Tyne (pop 275,000)?
FFS.
Is it a bad thing that when I saw this thread, the first thing I thought about was the USS Exeter (http://homepage.mac.com/starshipexeter/)?

Do both places have universities?
I imagine 'that' would be at least one deciding factor. :)
Newcastle UT has two; Exeter one.
AFAICT.

Okay, then. Perhaps Exeter is just a cooler town in general, with lots of educated, liberal, affluent adults in the surrounding 50 miles. :)
Any chance 'that' might be the case? ;)

I'd imagine it comes down to how easy it is to get a retail let in the city. The south isn't exactly swamped with Apple stores, although there are only 9 in the country in total IIRC.

Both have Universities. The University of Newcastle has around 20,000 students, compared to Exeter's 15,000, and The University of Northumbria has closer to 30,000. I'd guess they're just taking up the opportunity the redevelopment of Princesshey gives them - although I think the region this Apple store will serve is a lot more affluent than Newcastle. The students at this University are very posh and well-to-do, it's the typical choice of an Oxbridge reject.

Ah, you beat me to it. The affluence is an issue I believe. Students here have an awful lot of cash.

No, sorry :( He works with disabled students. I've met 4 or 5 staff members through him - it doesn't seem, uh, a very 'honourable' place, if you know what I mean :\ Clyst Vale - is that near the country club with the golf course? We went there for the Netball Dinner (I'm not in it, a lady friend is). Nice place, although I had to buy new trousers due to blood / vomit (both other people's).

No it's not, it's in 'Dog Village', Broadclyst, (technically East Devon, but outskirts of Exeter). Thought my mum works at the EGCC!!! ooo it's a small world! Anyway, this is probably the convo we should be having in a PM.. slightly O/T!
Exeter Apple Store... Woooo!

You've obviously never been involved in a thread with me before. Off topic is what I do :) Small world indeed! I'm glad there's one less Apple geek in the city for me to vie with for a job at the store! :)
Did you apply online? Also do you know how long until you get a response or call for an interview or something similar?

I know of one other person who has applied, and plenty who plan to visit!
Do they do the free tshirts for the opening of every new store? I seem to think it's the first 1000 visiters, is this right?
This could be a nice way to get leopard too - camping outside the store!
sad? yes! will I still do it? probable.
