View Full Version : Can anyone tell me what this means at the apple store??

I decided to exchange my 2.2ghz mbp for a 2.4ghz mbp and since it was the 3rd time exchanging they told me that my name is on a "list". I was wondering if anyone here knows what that means and if I cant exchange it anymore? So if I have a problem with this new mbp, does that mean I cant exchange it anymore?? Also they put like some blue sticker on the box that I exchanged to. Could anyone clear this up for me.

They'll most probably add a "are you really really sure"-button to the apple store chekout page next time you buy something.

But seriously, I wouldn't know. Maybe they'll postpone shipment of any future order for a few days, just to make sure you don't change your mind? Than they don't have to go through the hassle of stoping the whole thing further along the lines.

I'm talking about exchanging not through the phone or online, but at an apple store in my local mall. If anyone used to work at an apple store could clear this up I would appreciate it.

Why are you exchanging something three times? Or is this three separate exchanges? Were the others due to faulty products or are you just a real impulsive type, you drop the money, you get home and feel bad about it and you bring it back? Or are you impossibly anal about every little aspect of a product, and bring things back on "appearance" grounds?

If so, stop.

You're driving everyone around you 105% crazy. I'd put your name on a list too...

:p

But seriously, they might just think you're running some sort of game, or that you're looking to get over on them, and they're just being careful? I don't now. Or, in their eyes, you've crossed the line into "pain-in-the-butt...not worth the hassle" territory?

I don't know...you should call them tomorrow and find out (just pretend you're someone else).

"If, say, I wanted to return 11 brand new Xserves that I thought would be cool to have in my garage..."

:p

I think if you have legit problems with your product you could get some help. But I think they're not interested in endless "buyer's remorse" cases...the kind of person who walks in on a Saturday and buys two 30" Cinema Displays, then is back on Sunday morning, returning them both because didn't "think if through" hard enough?

The blue sticker most likely means that it will be refreshed and sold as an open box model at a discount.

Beyond that, I've gotta agree with pscates post above. I'd also say that if you return/exchange something else, you'd better make sure you have a GOOD reason, and that you're within the 14 day deadline, or expect to get charged a restocking fee.

since it was the 3rd time exchanging
Why are you exchanging something three times? Or is this three separate exchanges? I'm also wondering exactly what you meant by that.

I'm talking about exchanging not through the phone or online, but at an apple store in my local mall. I already had it exchanged but this one before they told me if I was sure and I did pay the restock fee to upgrade from the 2.2ghz to this 2.4ghz that I would be on a list since I exchanged it 3 times.
First I had a macbook core 2 duo and I upgraded to the new mbp 15" led 2.2ghz because it was released days after I got my macbook but the first 15" had a yellow tint and gradient problems on my screen and I exchanged it to another 2.2ghz mbp led and it was perfect but I decided I wanted the 2.4ghz because of the 256mb of vram for future proofing for leopard but when I got it exchanged to this 2.4ghz mbp and paid the restock fee the employee there told me that i'm on a list because I exchanged it one too many times and asked me if I was sure I wanted to exchange it and put some blue sticker on the box of my mbp box. If anyone used to work at an apple store could clear this up I would appreciate it.

Yeah - you said that already - was there anything in the last 2 posts that suggested any confusion on that point?
I already had it exchanged but this one before they told me if I was sure and I did pay the restock fee to upgrade from the 2.2ghz to this 2.4ghz that I would be on a list since I exchanged it 3 times.
Sorry, but I'm getting a headache just trying to follow that sentence. Your entire post would be much more readable if you broke it up into several paragraphs. The Return key is larger than most of the others for many very good reasons, and this is one of them. But I don't think any amount of whitespace would make the above sentence any easier to follow.
First I had a macbook core 2 duo and I upgraded to the new mbp 15" led 2.2ghz because it was released days after I got my macbookOK - according to your posting history this all started on May 29. So that's ONE exchange - and it was an upgrade, since you went from a MB to an MBP.
but the first 15" had a yellow tint and gradient problems on my screen and I exchanged it to another 2.2ghz mbp led and it was perfectSo that's TWO exchanges - and this was a customer satisfaction exchange, as you weren't happy with the screen.
but I decided I wanted the 2.4ghz because of the 256mb of vram for future proofing for leopard
So, that's THREE exchanges - and this time it was for a product refresh. And this is the only 1 of the 3 times that you paid a restocking fee, even though you have left the Apple Store with THREE open boxes (well, possibly two, if the middle one had an actual hardware defect) that will be re-sold at a 10% discount.
but when I got it exchanged to this 2.4ghz mbp and paid the restock fee the employee there told me that i'm on a list because I exchanged it one too many times and asked me if I was sure I wanted to exchange it and put some blue sticker on the box of my mbp box. If anyone used to work at an apple store could clear this up I would appreciate it.So - the blue sticker was put on the box of the 2.4 Ghz that you took home? I have no idea what it means, but I suspect it means that as far as the store is concerned, you are abusing the return process, and you may have a real tough time exchanging it unless you have a VERY good case for doing so.

Sorry, but your rambling "but-but-but" explanation has not changed the opinion that I originally posted. I may not know exactly what the blue sticker and "the list" mean - but if there is a "list" of people that abuse the return policy, then someone who's exchanged three laptops (two of which were not defective in any way) over a 30 day period for 3 different reasons should definitely be on it.

Now quit your whining, and enjoy your MBP. :p
And, since you seem to be a bit of a spec-whore, you should upgrade the RAM to 2 GB (or maybe even 4!).
www.macsales.com is my favorite source, and they're pretty reasonable for the 4 GB kit.

Mind if I ask you, jjahshik32, as to why you did not ask the Apple store employee, what it means to be on "The List"? Since he/she was kind enough to mention that you are on "The List" now?

well at that time I was in a hurry because I was going to be late for work and I had the impression that they would just give me a harder time and know exactly how many times I've been in there. But I guess I was thinking harder about it and never seen that sticker on any of my boxes that I purchsed there, including a mac pro and 20" ACD and another macbook that I have.

Also i'm curious now because I"m torn because I have noticed a yellow tint at the bottom middle that goes up vertically so when I look at forums or websites there seems to be a yellowish/green glow right smack in the middle of the screen. I am not paranoid or psychotic (lol) but just very picky and when you pay $2500 for a laptop you expect it to be near perfect and this discoloration in the middle seems to strain my eye and gets very very annoying.
I also had the color calibrated many times but end up with the same problems. Now i'm thinking about getting a refund this time or getting a 23" ACD with a white macbook.

oh and FFL it comes with 2gb standard =D

A MBP and a MB have different capabilities, and different target markets. jjahshik32, the way that you capriciously (well, seemingly, anyway) flip back and forth between the two machines makes it seem like you really don't know (or understand) what you want. I think that I can understand why your local Apple store is becoming wary of you.

Anyway, good luck.

I don't know what US law is like, but in the UK, they don't have to serve anyone if they don't want to...

I'd suspect that they would have you pegged as a "time waster" - give you your money back (minus the restock fee) and turf you out. Or at least, I would.

It could be that you are just very, very unlucky, but to be honest, it sounds like you're just being a bit odd....

FWIW, the MBPs have better screens than the MacBooks, so if you're satisfied with the screen you have, you certainly won't be with the MacBook's either.

The "blue sticker on your box" is obvious to me: when you bring that item back, they'll see it on the box. That sticker probably means something to them, internally ("difficult, tough-to-please customer", "many returns/exhanges", etc.). Some sort of variation on that.

That way, a low-rung employee might see the blue sticker and know that he is to go retrieve a manager or something?

I'm just guessing it's a visual cue for employees that "okay, this is probably a unique case...someone who's had a bit of back-and-forth and has been flagged, right or wrong, as a 'special needs' customer".

That's my guess.

A small blue sticker on box or big red "A" on your shirt...which would you rather have?

:p

In any case, since you're "on the list" I'd be very careful about how - and why - you went back there again. If you're not getting satisfaction, then you could take it to the mothership and write corporate? I don't know.

I'm just thankful I don't work in an Apple store. I would've shot you already.

I am satisfied with my screen because these new led mbp are bright and crisp and have no problems when watching movies or viewing pictures, its even much more vibrant than my 20" acd by like a 10 times. Its only when your reading things online like text, especially on a white or grey background such as this forum that you notice the yellow tint only about a size of two quarters at the bottom. But then the first mbp I had did have a horizontal streak of yellowness all the way across the bottom of the screen.

I decided not to go back to return it because I dont want my local apple store to think i'm an assh*** and especially that I know that there will be another problem with the next mbp that I exchange to and its easier to just deal with this problem.
Heck my 20" acd has a dead pixel and sure it bothered me for the first month or two but I got over it and dont even notice it anymore even though its right in the middle.

Ok but one last thing though to everyone who's reading this thread that these new mbp all have some form of yellowing that shifts from the left of the screen and looks to have a bluish push to the right or yellowing from the bottom or on the top.

You will have it no matter what and I dont know if its because of these new led screens are rev. A (go fig) but just a warning to you all who are color freaks and that like accurate colors and people that like to read mostly websites and read news online, *beware these new screen will make the text and backgrounds look like mixed colors and not very pleasing to read text as the old ccfl screens.* I still have an older macbook and its much easier to read text and pleasing to the eyes because there are no weird color shifts or mixes.

Perhaps all the lcd panels have this problem just that its less apparent in ccfl because its not as bright and vibrant and not showing most of its colors. I just hope apple will recognize this problem in a month or so and I can get my screen replaced.

I feel better about wanting an iPhone now. :D

Every time I've even thought about upgrading, it was for an actual change in my needs (whether I needed portability, power, etc.). I admit that I've made mistakes - I think "making do" with the MacBook, which is far too big for my tastes, was one of them, as was cheaping out on my cell phone provider - but I can honestly say I've never been through so many Macs so fast (though I admit that my upgrade cycle is still faster than some of yours - I guess I'm still on "PC Time" ).

Wasn't there some semi-journalist wannabe that used to run MacNet / MacNetv2 that had his Mac concerns flagged because he was on a 'list'? I remember reading about this a couple few years ago, and the guy thought (whether right or wrong I don't know) that Apple discounted his continuing computer problems to the point they denied him AppleCare support.

Yes, red/green but remember their are "degrees" of colorblindness. As colorblindness goes, mine is minor (but great enough that I could not be a jet fighter pilot which was my dream when I was a kid growing up by Top Gun.)

There is a slight yellowing that's very very slight but once you start web surfing for a lil bit you will notice it. Many people say that they dont notice it I think they just arent seeing it "yet". I even checked my cousin's mbp 2.4ghz led screen and he said he couldnt see it and he saids his color and eye vision is very good and I did see a slight yellowing tint around the bottom left to around the middle.
Its very very slight and I compared it to the older mbp the 2.33 ghz with the ccfl screens and they all dont have this problem. I guess for most people this slight yellowing is not a big deal so you either dont see it or dont really care but for me spending $2500 + I want my colors to be near perfect. Also people are having problems with gradients as well, you can do an lcd test to check your gradients. And some people are having problems with a line or breakage in their gradients.

some of the discussion can be found here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=313239

that is one of the threads about the yellow tint, I've seen other threads on just about every mac forums and so far I'ved looked at 10+ mbp's and they all have some sort of yellow tinting some worse some not so bad and barely. But all the macbooks and older mbp's I have seen all have even coloring.

P.s. I dont doubt this is one of the best mbp's I've owned since the first mbp core duo and surprisingly I only got it serviced once for the whining and never had it exchanged that many times. This is the first time I've had it exchanged this many times, just and surprisingly just 2 years ago I was a dell lover and user and I was never picky at all. I guess apple laptops are considered the best quality in the world so I expect it to be pretty much perfect.

And my first mac purchase was a 17" powerbook 1.67ghz last rev. with the 1650 x 1050 screen, my favorite out of all so far and I guess this mbp except the yellow tinting. I love everything about this laptop a direct x 10 graphics card with 256vram and that it can fit 4gb rams and the screen is the brightest and cleanest i've ever seen too. So all those pluses and 1 minus about the slight yellow tinting I decided to keep it. Sorry this response is so long.

I didn't exchange anything to get my MacBook. I think, just maybe, they were just being nice.

Or else they, like, wanted to be able to tell that I had paid for my MacBook as I left the store. Who knows.
