I just bought a 24in imac with the 2.8GHz core 2 extreme and in the system profiler it says 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo.... is that right because the extreme is part of the core 2 duos or is something wrong?

I just looked it up in the terminal and it says "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU X7900 @ 2.80GHz" so i guess they didnt update the profiler to to read it as a core 2 extreme.... oh well

Welcome to AppleNova. Nice machine.
By the way it's iMac not imac.
They are really fussy about that kind of thing around here, someone is bound to make a fuss.
Having said that, it's a real nice place to be and generally they are a good crowd. :)
I better go now don't want no agro..............*Looks over shoulder and tiptoes away* ;)
The Core 2 Extreme *is* a Core 2 Duo.
It's only called "Extreme" because of the higher clock speeds.

thanks for all the input..... i had one more question.... on the left side of my iMac's screen towards the center there seems to be a dead pixel well im not sure if its dead but its darker than the others, you can only notice it on a white screen... would that warrent having to return it or sould i just let it go because i feel it i were to return it the new one could be worse? also could the pixel fix itself over time because im not sure if its actually dead, it might just be dull or something like that? thanks again

My iMac, has a pixel kind of like that on a white background, its really not that big of deal to me

Report which of those tests show a black spot in the location. Then we'll know exactly what it is.
(You're sure it's not dirt, right?) :)
It's nothing to worry about, anyway. I have a single red dead subpixel on a same size screen. It is the absolute least significant fault there is, and since there's only one, the screen is just about perfect. Never noticed it other than in testing. No mainstream LCD companies exchange screens for faults this small AFAIK.
Back in the day when the faults were more common, I think some people were gently rubbing the dead/stuck pixels with an eraser while the display was shut down...?
(It could well have been the kind of measure people advocate in the situation where you are set on sending the screen back if it doesn't get better. Might damage something. If this interests you, look into it carefully first, don't just jump in and try it.)

I think there's some kind of software tool too. Like a little program that make flash your screen pretty quick or something like that. Seems it worked for a couple a people who tried it. Maybe you could have a look at this.

I just got my 24" iMac yesterday. It is the best computer I've ever owned. I love it. I upgraded the low end 24" model to 2.8Ghz and then ordered 4gigs of RAM from somewhere else. So for the same price as the high end model, I got the same "extreme" processor and maxed out RAM... with only a slightly smaller hard drive. I'm really happy with this machine. :)
My only complaint is a small one..... the included black wipe cloth for the screen is utterly useless. It leaves small pieces of itself all over the screen.

I also just bought a new 24 Inch iMac and i love it. I did not think i would notice the difference over my 3 year old iMac but wow. By the way I'm typing this on my 8 gig iPhone.

So incredibly jealous of anyone with a 24" iMac!!!
Congrats on your new purchase!
Thanks. Do other people here have experience with the online Apple store? According to the Apple store the delivery time of my new iMac was 2 - 3 days, but the actual expected delivery time is now 12 days already. I had the same experience with my iBook (which took even longer to ship because the plane they put it in was broken).
If you BTO, the expected time will change. The more you add, the longer it takes.
Yes but that is displayed in the website even before you actually buy the thing. I ordered a standard 24" 2.4 GHz iMac with no extras. On the website Apple told me the expected delievry time was 2 - 3 days. After I'd ordered it, I got a mail with a link to a site where you can see where your Mac is and what the expected delivery date is. I ordered mine on September 6, and when I looked at the webpage a day later the expected delivery date that was displayed on this webpage was september 14 - 17! The expected delivery date is now september 18, even. That's a lot more than 3 days. And as I said, this is the second time Apple did this to me. I had the same with the iBook I ordered two years ago.

type sysctl machdep in the terminal then the second line says machdep.cpu.brand_string followed by the brand/cpu type...
