View Full Version : The BMW M5 is a killing machine.

This thing can kill you with a touch to the gas pedal. The 2006 BMW M5 has a V-10 engine and has 507 HP. But, you can set the engine in "baby mode" and throttle the HP down to 400 HP. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 13 flat. For the best jump of the line. You have to do this stuff and then put it in gear and the automatic SMG 7 speed transmission takes over and takes the M5 to the moon. The transmission is designed just for the M5 and the forthcoming M6. The M5 can easily go 155 MPH and with the speed controller off you can easily achieve 200 MPH. Unlike the M5's competitors from Mercedes and Audi, the M5 does not use a turbo or supercharger to achieve the 507 HP. I fear what the world will become if Jack or murbot got in this car.

Wait.

Fucking awesome fast car + automatic transmission?

BOO!

EDIT: Oh, and this is a 2006 model? It's not even 2005 yet! I guess they'll start selling it in early 2005...

The automatic transmission in the new M5 will make the clutch lovers forget all about the missing clutch. Unless you are one of those ignorant people they described.

I just find driving a manual more fun. Yeah, maybe this new auto is so good that it's just as fast or faster, but you're just not in control! It's not the same.

Hell, even my family's crappy old 1991 Corolla with a 97 hp engine is kind of fun to drive since it has a manual.

Yea, I hear that there are lots of new automatic systems that are as efficient or more efficient than manual, and that they are just as fast or faster or whatever.

but ultimately, driving stick is way more fun.

that said, I don't drive for fun, I drive to get from point A to point B, should sometime in the future I have the means, I'd have an automatic car for that, and a manual car for fun driving. but as of now, I have no car because I live in a city on the other side of the country from my home :p

I don't hate GUIs, just Wizards. It's not like having a manual transmission car requires a whole lot of extra effort, but it at least makes you feel like you're in control and not letting the car drive you. If you get an auto, you may as well be driving a go-kart, because that's what it feels like.

Besides, manuals are still more fuel-efficient than autos, unless you pay a ton of money for the latest luxury car... and if you're paying $50-$100k for a car, you're not going to care too much about a few mpg of fuel efficiency.

Of course, I don't have nearly the money to be owning or maintaining a car. I just use the bus system.

I got to drive an M4 in the summer. It was fucking INSANE. 6-speed standard.

I actually thought to myself "hmm, thought it would have more oomph to it" as I was taking it up through the gears for the first time. Then I looked down and realized I was going 220 km/h, and I still had a couple of gears left. heh

Haha, that reminds me of the time I was riding a friend's motorcycle down Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I revd it up and let out the clutch, shifted to second gear and let it rip. I looked down and I was doing 95, in second gear. No one needs that kind of power, but it sure was fun :D

Sounds like my Ducati900SS. God I miss that bike.

65 down the highway in 2nd, not even close to redline, and four more gears to go. The bike that scared Hunter S. Thompson to death: http://www.home.earthlink.net/~desmoduck/sausage.htm

Gotta love it. I sure did. whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

I don't find there's anything really great about this car. It's all just small increases in numbers on top of already astronomical ones. Speed (as in SPEED) and luxury/comfort are always at odds with each another. This car tries to balance between the two and though they have probably managed to do it well, I don't really like the basic concept.

At these performance and weight levels, why doesn't it have 4WD? There's just no way two wheels transmit that power efficiently in road conditions and street tires. 4WD would make sense from both performance and safety standpoint. (edit: maybe their space age transmissions can't take the strain?)

The "robot manuals" like the M5 has are indeed more efficient speed- and gaswise than normal manuals. I'd rather have a normal one, for fun and feel of control. Now if you're looking for either speed or luxury, BMW's choice of transmission is a good one.

One thing I think is nice is the direction of engine development. Both BMW's and Audi's new hi-power engines turn high revs, and many of them are naturally aspirated. Revs and variable valve tech instead of bigger displacement, whether "real displacement" or "artificial displacement" through forced induction. Unfortunately the cars are getting heavier and heavier and at this point the Germans don't put less than 8 cylinders in hi-po engines. I want to see that stuff in smaller blocks (fours) also by other makers than Honda. Not that there's anything wrong with Subaru and Mitsu turbo fours...

My Infiniti G35 is an automatic. While a manual transmission vehicle is fun to drive, I'm over it for my every day vehicle. Rush hour traffic twice a day kind of does that to you.

M4? Not M3? I am confused... the new 2006 Revamp of the 3-series?

Yeah I'm looking at the M6 article in Road & Track right now, that car will be amazing. :-D I am also looking forward to the 2006 M trim of the Z4.

And my Infiniti has a manual (clutchless) shifting option which is kind of cool. It's not nearly the same, but, for instance, I like to use the transmission to slow me down sometimes... like when going into turns sometimes. So I'll kick my G35 over into manual shifting mode when I feel like doing that. It's an acceptable compromise.

Hmm, well I thought for sure it was an M4, and it was bought new this year... they don't have a 2004 M4?

I just know it was $115,000 CDN (no idea if that is the stock price, or if they had extras in there) and it had 400 HP.

Rush hour traffic twice a day kind of does that to you.Interestingly, I'd prefer the manual even in rush hour traffic. Normally it's the right foot that does most of the work, by staying on the gas and the occasional brake. When you're creeping in a traffic jam in a manual, the left foot does all the work by modulating the clutch. On automatic the creeping is modulated with the brake, so it would tax the same leg that you have to use all the time in traffic anyway. Both on auto and manual, you can go to neutral on full stop and relax, no difference there.

WORD!! Personally, I'd like to see more and more sporty cars available with a highly efficient automatic as an option. How about the 2005 Mercedes CL 65 AMG :D
Net Power: 604 hp @ 5,500 rpm
Net Torque: 738 lb-ft @ 2,000 - 4,000 rpm
7-speed automatic:
* Electronically controlled shifting. Driver-adaptive programming adjusts shift points to the driver’s current driving style.
* Touch Shift allows driver to manually downshift and allow upshifts by nudging the shift lever left or right from the Drive position.
* Shift into Optimum Gear programming allows one-touch selection of the best gear for maximum acceleration or engine braking by holding the shift lever to the left of Drive for one second.
* Driver-selectable Comfort mode starts vehicle moving in 2nd gear or a second Reverse gear, and upshifts at lower rpm, to help improve control on slippery surfaces.

No, they have M3's currently that is the only sold M-model. At least in the US, but I'm pretty sure that goes for the rest of the world. In Europe, well at least in Poland I know that they also have an M3 CLS available, but that is not available in the States or America Jr. ;)

Jesus, does it also stir the slush you have in the cup holder, pull your underwear out of your ass crack, and choose a radio station based on your mood? Does it fucking steer for you too?!!

 (j/k)

Sorry. I'd gladly pass on all of that shit for a nice 6 speed stick. :)

To reference to the M5, The CL 65 AMG achieves 604 HP via twin turbo chargers. Take away the twin turbo chargers you may have it around 500-575 HP. The BMW M5 achieves the 507 HP by the V-10 engine itself. The 65 AMG has a V-12. But, the 65 AMG is a sweet car.
