iPod Dock Connector protocol

So, I have an idea for a cool craft/hobby project, but before I run off and buy something that can't be returned, I need to check if it's even possible.

Is the control protocol for operating an iPod through the dock connector a documented standard? Or is it an "authorised vendors only" type thing? I was hoping to get an old busted jukebox (I know where I can get one!) and fit an iPod inside it, controlled from the jukebox buttons.

So, can it be done?

It's possible with the 3.0 iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad SDK, but I think you have to join the ($99/year) developer program to get access to that documentation. I'm not sure about iPod controls, though.
