Well done, boys.

I like it if for no other reason than to funnel the n00bs into one forum. ;)

Regardless, I think we'll all be checking there often to give our respective .02.

Thank you. :)

Yeah, I think it's warranted, at this point. Seem to be enough switchers, newbies and current Mac users interested in upgrading/trading-up to give that a focused, dedicated area. If nothing else, it might help de-clutter General Discussion and a few other forums just a tad, which were getting quite nutty lately.

I think what might be a very cool - and useful - addition to this new forum is to have a sticky - doesn't have to contain art or fancy graphics like MacRumors.com one does - that is our own "buying guide" in the form of listing all of Apple's products (hardware, anyway) and simply showing when they were last updated and perhaps a consensus among the mods and some of the more insightful, level-headed and in-the-loop members as to whether said product should be purchased now or waited on.

We could use the already-there information from MacRumors.com to simply get it going, and then, of course, update/maintain it ourselves (mods, of course) as products are released or updated?

That, as a permanent sticky at the very top of the Purchasing Advice thread, would make that particular forum a VERY focused, info-packed destination for someone strictly interested in buying a Mac, whatever their background or situation. They can take a quick look at the sticky to see where the product they're interested in is in its update cycle. That alone might take care of half the reason people start threads for.

From there, armed with this info, they can peruse the existing threads or create one of their own.

I know I would use that quite a bit, having it all right here "in house" at my favorite hangout (and not having to go to the other site(s) to get this info...

I never realized how dependant on the order of the forums I was. It had my really screwed up for a day or two, looking for AO or GB. I'm getting used to it now.

I actually feel the opposite of you 709, I do NOT think I'll be going in there often to give my .02. Nothing against helping people, but I don't see what I know that others shouldn't be able to figure out. Unless I want to buy something, I don't see that it is geared towards me.

Well, isn't that kinda the point? If someone's not looking to buy anything, I wouldn't expect them to haunt "Purchase Advice".

Quite a few people here at 'Nova...and some of them might be interested in buying something. They now have a focused, dedicated section of the forum to turn to.

Sorry to state the obvious...

To each his own. I'll be steering clear of the 'OMG when is teh next revision/price drop/whatever because I need it NOW' threads myself, but I've bought a lot of shit in my day and don't mind throwing a thumb up or down if it helps somebody out. :)

There are people who know a lot about different products. If they aren't interested in buying something, they won't be in Purchasing Advice to give their input. I'm not saying I'm one of these people, but like you just said yourself. Not wanting to buy something, you probably won't be in there. If only the ignorant (not meant negatively) are there, what's the point?

I think it will do fine, I know people will go in there and help, but I do not believe that I will be in there much, and I see it could apply to others as well. I don't/didn't mind helping (heh, hey I pretend) in GE because I happened to run across, but if I don't see it, I can't help.

I'm just giving myself as an example, I could be completely different than everyone else though.

I think you might be.

:)

I'm not really buying anything, but I'll check the threads and see. If someone - particularly a newbie or potential switcher - is looking for help and advice, I'd offer some if I'm able to.

I'm sure tons of other people here would do the same, and are.

You're the one who said you weren't much interested in that aspect, so cool. Don't. Or do, if you come across something you feel you have some insight on. Ain't rocket science. I check that particular forum 1-2 times a day, just skim the titles. What, 10 seconds?

You don't have to be a hardware guru to offer helpful advice. Sometimes people just want to know "is this a good deal?" or "should I buy now or wait until school?" or "do I need a dock with my iPod?"...general, non-techie things that anyone can chime in on that still falls under "purchasing advice".

Was this forum your idea? Your very defensive.

I mentioned it a long time ago.

I'm not defensive, I simply said you don't have to be a hardcore hardware type to offer general help to people, especially with all these newbies and switchers coming our way lately.

I don't care what anyone does.
