Hitchhikers Guide trailer (http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/trailers/index.html). Arthur and Trillian have met a new character named Humma Kaluva (John Malkovich) and just learned his secret.
If you can't guess where I got the name for my iPod, you ain't tryin' hard enough.
It is snowing outside... apparently. It was earlier. Haven't looked in a while. But my menubar says so, so it must be true!
I wish the Dock could have the iCal icon always have a current date. At least you can make it show by launching once a day. Still, it would be cooler if stuff could update without having to be running.
What else? I dunno.

Holy Beans! How does everyone get their desktop looking so cool? Mine doesn't deviate much from the basic OSX default... it looks so boring. So far I've seen black dock backgrounds, different-looking icons for the HDD/trash, weird battery meters/airport status monitors, weather icons, iTunes menu bar controls... a host of awesome things that I'd like to have. Where does everybody get them? Oh, here's mine. As I said, it's pretty boring, with the exception of the incredibly-cool iBook X-ray picture (yes, my computer is an iBook).

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's an x-ray image of a titanium PowerBook, not an iBook.

I like InterfaceLift (http://www.interfacelift.com/) for desktop images. They have many wide-aspect images to choose from, good for the wide screen PBs (or any other display for that matter).

For the dock, I used Transparent Dock (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6490).
To change the apple to another color you will have to use a haxie. Unless you can settle for graphite=grey, and you can change that under appearances in system prefs.
I've used Shape Shifter (http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter/) in the past apply themes to OS X. These can cause your computer to become unstable, BEWARE!

They are Konfabulator (http://www.konfabulator.com/) widgets.

Step 1
Use an image editor (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=image+editor+mac+os+x) to convert the image to jpeg or png format.
Step 2
As well as the original full size image (now in jpeg/png format) also create a smaller version for posting on the forums. (about 300px wide should be ok)
Step 3
Upload your two image files to some webspace (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=free+image+hosting) or .mac account.
Step 4
Use the image button and the link button when writing your message to add the smaller image direct in the post and create a link to the full size version.

A faster way is to open up the PDF in Preview, click on "Zoom Out" a few times, and take a screenshot(using Shift-Cmd-4) of the now-shruken screenshot. Using Preview, export both to JPEG/PNG format, and upload.

MacHead05, how did you put a theme on Tiger? Did you just replace the actual files, or are you using a theme changing application of some sort? I don't think ShapeShifter is Tiger compatible, at least not yet.
MacHead05, how did you put a theme on Tiger?
What makes you think that's Tiger? All signs point to Panther.
The iTunes thing is a Konfab widget. The Automator icon is just plastered over the Finder icon.
Gee... I wonder...
:p
Is there something in Tiger that will be able to do this?
Widgets in Tiger will be able to do the same thing, but they won't be the same.
For instance, Konfabulator Widgets can go on the desktop as well as float and even show up only in Expose.
Whereas Dashboard Widgets can only show up in the Dashboard environment. Not on the desktop.
If someone were to hack Dashboard to allow widgets to have the same window leveling options as Konfab, I'd dump Konfab in a second. (Less resources taken up, the better.)

Actually, there's a cute little Tiger app/utility out called Amnesty (http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm) that allows you to keep Dashboard widgets live floating on your desktop. Of course at this point it is only a beta, and doesn't work with everything, but it's delightfully unintrusive, and it's getting better with every update. Check it out! :)
Wow. That's pretty good for a beta. I like that it can put them on the desktop. But I'd love a Konfab-like version where it puts them on the desktop but click-through or on the top level and click through. THOSE two options are 100% important for me. Without them, the app's useless. I can't have any "widgets" clickable. It's just how I work.
Maybe in the final version. Sadly they lose their flipping animation.
Though, I'd really hate to have to convert my Konfab widgets to Apple Widgets.
I wonder how much memory a Konfab version of the same Widget would take up vs the Apple version...?
Amnesty doesn't impress me. It's good. But really, I don't use DB Widgets as much as I thought.

Went with a pink motif this time (Just for the 2 minutes it took me to setup.) because well, it's the only color I hadn't used yet. Everything's pink. Natalie's hair is pink. The calendar is pink. The sky in WeatherPop Advance is even pink!
And now it's back to normal.

Well you can pay for CandyBar or you can just paste images that you make overtop of the original image for an item. Go to www.iconfactory.com for CandyBar.

That LotR picture would be so much better without the text...
Ditto. I hate how you can have a great desktop picture, but have it totally ruined by text. :( It's a beautiful picture, but I hate text on my desktops. (Unless it's part of a photograph on a sign or something.)
Desktop from my main computer. Super clean!

Ditto. I hate how you can have a great desktop picture, but have it totally ruined by text. :( It's a beautiful picture, but I hate text on my desktops. (Unless it's part of a photograph on a sign or something.)Even if they must stick text on it, they could do it better.
Like have less of it. "The Motion Picture"? Ooh, nice to know, someone could otherwise confuse it with Tolkien's original concept art for the book. AOL keyword, absolutely useless to something like 99% of the world population, and that's discounting the computer literate portion of AOL users? Who even bothers to remember the regular address when there is Google?
Finally, the artist responsible for finishing and putting up that piece of concept art should definitely have understood that the primary use for pictures like this is desktop wallpaper.. and have left a minimum of 10% margin to all sides before text.
Well the main use of this picture is marketing, so they put in as much information as possible so you can find them and give them your money. I hate it too, but that's what you get for free-riding ...
Usually they leave space at the bottom for the Windows taskbar (Because, of course, there is no other OS than Windows, right?) but that one even has the text all the way at the bottom! It would be covered by the taskbar! What is this designed for Windows 3.1?
Well the main use of this picture is marketing, so they put in as much information as possible so you can find them and give them your money. I hate it too, but that's what you get for free-riding ...Essentially you are saying that there are people surfing for LotR wallpapers for their computer desktops, who are unable to find a place to buy LotR stuff unless the address is in the wallpaper?
Seriously. That argument sucks. :\
Hot damn you are good did it say somewhere?
Your fuzzing out wasn't good enough - i can read that. But I'm short-sighted so am used to deciphering fuzzy text.
Ditto. I hate how you can have a great desktop picture, but have it totally ruined by text. It's a beautiful picture, but I hate text on my desktops. (Unless it's part of a photograph on a sign or something.)
Isn't that what Photoshop is for?
Essentially you are saying that there are people surfing for LotR wallpapers for their computer desktops, who are unable to find a place to buy LotR stuff unless the address is in the wallpaper?
You think the only way people get these files is by going to the right websites? :| The pictures get emailed around, posted on other sites, people see them as backgrounds on their friends'/colleagues' computers - or they google for "background pic hax0ring" and find this thread. In all those cases, the company behind the LotR movies wants them to know where to go, and this way perhaps sell a couple more DVDs or other stuff.

In all those cases, the company behind the LotR movies wants them to know where to go, and this way perhaps sell a couple more DVDs or other stuff. If you read carefully, that's not what I said. My point is, if the background says "Lord of the Rings" on it, that's plenty info for people to find it.
If they want to buy, most of them will go to a brick-and-mortar store, or their favorite webstore for movies, one of which will have salespeople and the another a search facility. If they want to find out more about it on the net, they drop "Lord of the Rings" in Google. I would do that even if I had the exact address on my desktop background, because it's less trouble and works just as surely.
The result of making the picture uglier is that alot fewer people will have it on their desktop, while I submit that the text (beyond "LotR") does not help them to sell more.
Your fuzzing out wasn't good enough - i can read that. Hmm... I could only pick out one category of people in IM, and one person under that category. The rest were totally fuzzy. Could you read all of it? Or most?
Isn't that what Photoshop is for?Depending on picture, it can be really hard. There's a lot of text, fat text, in there. Actually I'd like to see someone really skilled try to erase it.
Hmm... I could only pick out one category of people in IM, and one person under that category. The rest were totally fuzzy. Could you read all of it? Or most?
The White on Blue stuff I can't read. The Black on Grey I can. Especially the "Jump" in Jump Around.

I am by no means "really skilled" and there's a fair few artifacts on the sky in particular...but:
http://homepage.mac.com/bryson430/.Public/art_bree_1280%20%20Modified.jpg
I keep refining it and the artifacts are getting less.
That's pretty nice work. You're right, there is minor artifacting on the sky, but if I didn't know what to look for I wouldn't see it, it hides well in the natural grain of the picture.
Is this mostly done with the clone brush? It's been ages since I touched PS.

oh.. and the menu bar customizing can be done with a program called "shapeshifter" by unsanity.com (http://unsanity.com). it's a great program with tons of templates to apply to your computer. there's also many other programs they make so you can modify other parts of your system as well. :-)

My computer is distinctly boring. Mainly because I am distinctly limited by still being a schoolgoing student living with my parents, and as such not having the luxury of buying shareware computer-customization tools, or indeed a new computer (it's a 400MHz G3 iMac -_-)...
So my desktop isn't that interesting, but I'll post it anyway, just for the hell of it.

Viewed head-on, the large mandibles of the cottonwood borer are very visible. They can bite if mis-handled! They may also make a little buzzing/hissing sound when handled. (info from here: http://www.gpnc.org/cwoodborer.htm )
this one buzzed when i picked it up fairly loudly...then it crawled up my finger and tried biting my finger nail with it's large mandibles...not getting a good bite on my nail, it moved to the side and was about to bite into the flesh of my finger when i quickly flicked it off...i think i might of hurt it as it's mandibles don't come together correctly on this photo i took after flicking it...still i took it to the grass and it crawled off...probably should have killed it, but i didn't know it was a tree boring beetle...and i hate killing things anyways

Same here. D'oh. 37 items. Time to organize!

how do you get the widget like things on the desktop? A calender would to be nice?
If you're running 10.4.2 you can simply open Dashboard, click on a widget from the bar where you normally add them and hold the mouse down. Press F12 with the mouse held down and the widget will attach to your desktop. Reactivate Dashboard to get the widget off your desktop.

I haVe no f12 on my iBook lolIt's not necessarily F12 that you need to hold down. It's whatever key you have assigned to dashboard. I think F12 is the default, but I, for instance, changed mine to F1. It's just a matter of leaving the dashboard while still holding the widget (but a hot corner won't trigger while you're holding a widget , so it's got to be a function key).
If you're running 10.4.2 you can simply open Dashboard, click on a widget from the bar where you normally add them and hold the mouse down. Press F12 with the mouse held down and the widget will attach to your desktop. Reactivate Dashboard to get the widget off your desktop.
its kinda kool because i like to have the weather on the desktop but i dont like the fact that no matter what, the widget is always on top...is there a way to get it to chill in the background because then it would be perfect...

Just in case anyone is having trouble uploading an image of their desktop, check out this tutorial:

Doesn't get any easier than that :)

Doesn't get any easier than that :)There's no "Print Screen" button on the Mac keyboard. There is no Paint program in Mac OS X, though the Pro line comes with GraphicConverter.
I know it's been gone over a thousand times before, but to take a screenshot, just press Shirt-Cmd-3. If it ends up as a PDF, export it using Preview to JPG or PNG. I think the new default in Tiger is PNG. Downsize the file with whatever program you use to do so. Photoshop, GraphicConverter, etc.
If you don't have/don't want to use any of those programs, you can open it in Preview, zoom out, and take another screenshot using Shift-Cmd-4, which lets you select just a portion of the screen.
BTW, I really hope that isn't spam.

One word seems incredibly relevant to the posts on this page:
TinkerTool (http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html).
It allows you to *properly* enable Dashboard Widgets on the Desktop (it's the easiest way to activate Developer mode, which allows you to put Widgets outside Dashboard without having them 'snap back' when you next open it), AND it allows you to change the default screenshot format to the much more convenient JPEG.
My (fairly generic) screenshots, courtesy of the incredibly convenient Capture widget:

Hey Jasoco, where did you get that pinup calendar widget from?
It is mine. Mine I tells ya! You must be registered at Konfabulator Forums to use it though. Go ahead. Enjoy.

Well, ya gotta crack that whip. Especially since he owed over $1100 at one point in a time, and being a good friend, I didn't charge interest. So, I guess I'm entitled to my 34 cents...but if he buys me a six-pack, I'll take that too. :)

Yea, I know. Messy, messy. My monitor died so I am using my projector while it is being fixed. The keyboard and mouse are 90º from the screen. :p
Oh yea, I made this. :D

Actually, I only have those 2, and I found them in different places on interfacelift.com.
PM me with your email address and I'll send them to you. :)
Done. Maybe I should bug the artist who did that iPod to make more...I NEED an iPod like that.

I know... that would be an awesome mod.
Here's the icon set on IFL:
http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/details.php?id=1027
That iPod icon reminds me of these (http://iconfactory.com/preview.asp?type=search&id=167) two (http://iconfactory.com/preview.asp?type=search&id=173) sets from The Iconfactory (download the sets and check out the HD icons, you'll see what I mean).
Here is a low quality pic of my desktop and dashboard. My desktop changes every few minutes and at the time was a photo I took of the atomium. The dashboard widgets include an artwork display thing which pulls an image from amazon if I don't have one set already, a BBC 6Music player, BBC news ticker and weather tracker, which wasn't working as the server was down.

I think he's using Konfabulator and not Dashboard. I think konfab is now free since Yahoo! bought them, so you can have it!

@InactionMan: Love the desktop. I'd love an iPod nano. The black one looks so cool.

As for your widget: any way to kill this pop-up?
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/1416/picture10sf.png
That comes up every time I start up Konfabulator, or I login/logout.
Re-download it. The same URL. It contains the latest stable version which hasn't been worked on in about 2 months. I've been running it with no problems. The older one still had the Debug option on. Sorry about that.
Ok, so it's been a while since I've posted my desktop...
As I work on a few of them now on a daily basis, here they are:
First off my lappy running Ubuntu Linux: :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/lickmeup/GnomeMini.png (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/lickmeup/GnomeDesktop.png)
Second we have a desktop with Kubuntu Linux: :)

Third we have a desktop in windows xp: :(

NOTE: click for full screenshot...
The two (K)Ubuntu systems are running the 5.04 release. I've really taken to Ubuntu over the past year, and being a Slackware head even I'm surprised at how much I like it.
The windows box I use for a few reasons... some apps I need for work, keeping sharp with windows for the freelance work I do. . . etc... it's currently using the MCE theme and Glass2k for transparent windows.
I also have a netvista LCD all-in-one, but I'm giving it to a friend soon and don't feel the need to post a screenshot of what's about to be imaged. As well, I have a network slave currently running OS9, it's an iBook G3 300 that I've gutted and rebuilt into a box... I could post a screenshot of that box, but it's down ATM for I have to jimmy up a new heatsink for the rig.
I wish my Linux desktops were more impressive, but I just don't have the time or care these days to jazz them up... I mean, my computers have a purpose and as long as they do their job, I'm happy.
My friend took this pic of his cat and its currently my desktop.
