i know im stupid for asking this but, how do you take the pic with the dock and all?
i am new to mac.
i have a really nice mars rover i want you to see
command + shift + 3 will take a screen shot and save the image to your desktop.
command + shift + 4 will give you a crosshairs so that you can take pictures of a portion of you screen.

Apple-shift-3 will take a screenshot of everything you see, menu bar and all.
Apple-shift-4 will turn on "selection mode" (I'm sure there's probably an official name for it). Press Apple-shift-4 and the cursor will turn into crosshairs; click & drag an area you want for a picture, release, and that's it. Or, if you press the space bar before clicking & dragging, the cursor changes to a camera icon, and you'll be able to take a picture of whatever window that you highlight. If you change your mind, you can press space again to toggle back to the crosshair cursor.

I'm thinking three ship desktops in a row is quite enough...next one will be a bit more colorful.
Semi-on-topic addendum: I just found out that if you try to browse a photocast album with one or more images not yet completely downloaded in the Desktop Backgrounds preference pane, System Preferences crashes. So, for those of you with iPhoto '06 who want to use a photocast as a source for desktop backgrounds (they show up as regular albums in the preference pane), beware! (umm...I'm probably the only one, aren't I? :o)
Likely.
Ah, yes...well...I was playing around on Google and found that picture. At the time I was looking for a desktop background and thought it was amazing. I have no idea who made it or where I got it, but I've never seen anyone else with it.

And no, that iTunes window is not a system-wide skin. It's just a modified .rsrc file (from here (http://www.resexcellence.com/itunes/user_iTunes_14.shtml)).
Add control to any of those combos and it'll copy to the clipboard instead of placing a file on your desktop.

Anybody else find it amusing that most Mac users seem to have very few items on their desktop? And that when you see a cluttered desktop your first thought is "They must be a recent switcher"? (No offence, sloth501, but you have an alias to Yahoo Messenger - you must be from the Windows world :) )

*Raises hand* Exception here.
I will stow all desktop items into a folder before taking a pic, but I think I have the most cluttered desktop award. The problem is, a cluttered desktop REALLY slows down OS X for some reason. The interface gets dreadfully lax.
I'd post a a screenshot, but I'm watching a DVD now. Maybe later...

Object dock is very handy... At one point I was doing the whole "OS X emulation" thing... Then we got a Mac, and I realized how insanely different is is, and gave up on the emulation. I haven't bothered changing some of the icons back. (They are, from left to right, My Computer, Gaim (2.0b2), PuTTY, Maguma Studio (A Wonderful PHP IDE), Calculator (Although, recently I've just been using Command Line Ruby[IRB]), Sandra, Object Dock Properties, Programs, Control Panel, and Recycle bin)
OpenOffice is wonderful... I just wish it had auto-recovery :/

no it doesn't really, but when you rotate the image it makes it appear pixelated because the edges are changing.
no it doesn't really, but when you rotate the image it makes it appear pixelated because the edges are changing.
I had noticed the difference and then rotated the picture. If I open the screen grab (non-thumbscrewed) and compare it to my desktop, they are very different. Contrast seems most effected in this case.
I've noticed this previously. Orange hues tend to get very muddy.
You are very correct about pixelation.

I have about thirty photos I have taken on a one minute rotation for my desktop - these are six of my current ones. I delete photos from the folder when I've seen them too much. These were all taken in Glasgow except the white boxes one which I took at the Tate Modern in London. The top right is the LED light on my JBL speakers, taken whist moving my camera with a long shutter speed.

Wow racerx, OS 8.6? Vintage, nice.:smokey:
8.6, wow is right, I found 8.6 to be very unstable.

8.6, wow is right, I found 8.6 to be very unstable.Actually 8.6 in Blue Box is far more stable than 8.6 on it's own. In Blue Box all memory management is handled by Rhapsody and not by 8.6... which is why the About This Computer panel is displaying such odd results.
And because Blue Box doesn't attempt to run rootless like Classic (if Blue Box wasn't running, you'd see some more windows from OmniWeb on the second display), Blue Box actually runs pretty close to the full speed of the hardware (I benchmarked Blue Box on a page here (http://www.rhapsodyos.org/system/bluebox_bench/bluebox_bench_1.html)).
The set up has some benefits... but I actually don't spend all that much time in Blue Box when using Rhapsody (I have more than enough Yellow Box apps). It is mainly my old mathematics apps that I use in Blue Box.

While generally pleasing, this photo makes my eyes water. I can't figure out the focal plane. While the focus is clearly on the gate, the bushes on the left are also generally in focus. However, to the right everything is out of focus, including the grass which should be in the focal plane as judged by the focused bushes on the left. The only thing I can figure is some sort of blurring filter with a cropped image or post-process photoshop work. Very well done, just too unsettling to me.
Any ideas on the origin of the original source?

It's the band The Fall of Troy, I took that picture the other night, my favorite band of all time, I got to see them for the first time...I drove like 2 hours just for the show, it was probably the most amazing show I've ever been to.
Sorry, I don't have a thumbnail, but here is my desktop, nothing special, just simple.

The wallpaper is the same black and white pier in OS X, just in color. It can be found here (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details.php?id=354).
The icons are of the Nintendo Wii (there are different colors), they can be found here (http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/details.php?id=1850).

It's tough finding nice 1680x1050 desktops for my work iMac. Most sites seem to top out at 1280x???, as though no one has a monitor larger than 17". :(
I've gotten to where I just make my own swirly, tweaked abstract stuff in Photoshop in righteous shades of orange, copper, etc. :p

That's my external LCD. The border around the edge is from Exposé.
I quite like this one. Where was it taken and do you have the original link/file?
Thanks a lot.

Really? I thought it was Panther as well.
I think thats Jaguar.
I know that Jaguar had the faint lines running through the menu bar, but I never used Panther so I can't make a comparison.

mmm, this is my work laptop desktop....running 10.3.9
was thinking of updating it to 10.4, but seems like i might as well wait till 10.5 comes out
g
the HD icon is from the icon factory: the clearblack mac set...will find a link for you...
the car is the volkswagen GX3 that VW said was going to be made and now might not (afraid of lawsuits)...if you want a fairly inexpensive 3 wheel car that goes fast and still gets 46 mpg, go bug VW.com and tell them to make this car and stop worring about lawsuits...hell people don't sue suzuki for making motorcycles that are dangerous, why would people sue VW for making a 3 wheeler that is probably slightly less dangerous? would love this as my work commuter car...of course i live in the southwest and could drive it year round...unlike you losers in the north ;)

Sweet. Very nice dock, btw.
Yeah, I'm a minimalist when it comes to the dock. At one point in time, I had no dock, but it wreaked havoc on my system (I use Quicksilver to launch apps).
The only items in the dock, with no apps open, is Finder and Trash.

What happened to your Finder icon, stacy?

I changed it. ;)
A lot of my apps have that black bordered icon style to them. I wish I could find one for Camino (I've been using the nightly builds lately, and love it).

Thank you very much, however, the art is from a band called Sigur Ros. The only thing i can "really" take credit for is making the icons (iCoco ;) ) and arranging everything around my desktop.
Thanks anyway :)

I like looking at big icons. I don't really have a problem seeing them if they were smaller, but I just love the Mac eye candy. (One of the main reasons I bought a Mac other than the awesome mac-only apps.) ;)

Love the background. It would be awesome if it was a screen saver which would periodically open to reveal something. Combine that with Visage and that would look awesome, and very distracting. There goes my productivity.
