It's an actual painting, called Elysium, by a pop artist named Brandon Bird. You can find many of his works here (http://www.brandonbird.com/paintings.html), though I think most of the hi-res versions have been taken down. The app to the right of Safari is Vienna (http://www.opencommunity.co.uk/vienna2.php), an open source RSS reader (one of the best available for OS X). The one to the left of QuickTime is BitRocket (http://www.bitrocket.org/), an open source BitTorrent client. It's an early beta but the UI pounds the snot out of Azureus, sadly Azureus' performance pounds the snot out of ever other BitTorrent app in the world so it wins in the end.

N00b question tag: How do you "make" wallpaper from an image?

I guess put them in photoshop, in a canvas that is your desktop size, and then either putting white round the edge, or not?

Yeah, I used the selector tool (or whatever the hell it's called) and selected all the black lines I wanted then just copy and pasted it to a blank canvas the size of my desktop. Then all I had to do was resize the image to fit the canvas.

I really do like that image as well. I hesitate to say this, since it is your computer, but have you considered ClearDock (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15895)? Seems it might make it even more appealing. Just a thought.

The wallpaper is a pic I took from the peak of Whistler Mountain, BC. The Ions are just the World of Aqua ones from Iconfactory, and the black thing is Adium with the "Sheer" Theme from AdiumXtras. :)

I would actually argue that the photo comes under "fair use" where one can photograph it for personal use. However, if he was going to sell it on it would then be dangerous territory. This of course is void if it is prohibited for security purposes.

For the name, I changed it on the xp side (right click on the drive/properties)

I was able to change my icon and name for BootCamp as well. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able too unless perhaps your partition is NTFS as mine is FAT32?

It's a game; American McGee's Alice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_McGee%27s_Alice), I've mentioned it a couple of times before here, usually when I get excited about games like Alan Wake. As for the picture's details: old farm house for a training burn. I'm a volunteer fireman and love it. This picture isn't depressing to me at all. There is so much life in the picture, it just makes my day every time I see it!

The wick distortion in the water makes me shy away from PS created. I'm sure it was modified and edited in PS, but it doesn't look like it is only PS.

Thanks. It's mostly due to the beating the pic took in iPhoto in an effort to get something lighter with reasonably decent colors (they turned out very red due to the streetlights).

Wish I could, but I can't. It's from the members gallery at Digital Blasphemy (http://digitalblasphemy.com/). There's a free gallery of 20 rotating pictures. which right now includes last year's halloween desktop (http://digitalblasphemy.com/fshow.shtml?i=mtrooper2k5&w=1152&h=864&y=2005&n=midnight%20trooper&b=home). A year-long membership is $25, which I think is worth it, especially since this is what the guy does for a living. (I mooched off the free gallery for a long time, then decided I was willing to pony up the dough), but my wife doesn't, so I probably won't renew again this year.
