Oh, I forgot we had a thread like this. Here is mine. The pic is from last month which is taken with my infrared modified camera. It is a dying town in Italy, and it was nothing short of breathtaking. Unfortunately, the aspect ratio is not right for my monitor.

A) That's beautiful. Care to share (I know you are a proper photog so you may have a copyright on it, and that's fine :) )

B) Just had a look at your Charlottesville Fire Dept. photo essay. Boston 'Big Picture' worthy, if I may say so!

Fahrenheit and Yontsey,

I normally would never do this, because I once found my pics used without permission on some Italian travel site for profit, but I trust you guys and take joy in making this community a better place.

Please PM me for the picture. :)

Eerie coincidence! :)

Today at lunch my coworkers and I went to a local sub shop and the TV in the corner was on CNN, featuring the current weather disasters (thunderstorms, tornadoes, etc). I mentioned that my favorite "disaster" photo was of the Chile volcano + lightning and pulled up that very same photo on my Crackberry to show them.

PS. Any chance you could thumbnail that? kthxbye.

Honestly, I'm surprised I hadn't thought to make a desktop picture like this before. Thanks for the inspiration, abb! I had the TNG tech manual back in the 90s but loaned it to a friend and never got it back. A couple years ago, though, my wifey found a replacement for me and it's now snuggled safely on the bookshelf. :)

edit: And here's a ZIP file (http://applenova.com/etc/brad/WarpFactorScales.zip) that contains several formats since SVG isn't quite commonplace yet: SVG, PNG (very large with alpha), PS, PDF, and ODG.

A combination of BowTie and GeekTool plus an explosion of color.

The weather and the background for my "Sidebar" are GeekTool. (The Weather script can be found in many places on the internet. Just use Google for GeekTool Weather.)

The rest, time, date, calendar, photo of Zooey Deschanel and song playing are a custom Bowtie Bowlet I made myself. It's proprietary. I built it myself custom.

The photo changes every 30 seconds between an assortment of specially picked photos.

The font used is from www.dafont.com and is called "EraserDust" and "Eraser" (One is all caps and hasslightly different numbers but doesn't have the Degrees symbol or some other special entities.)

The desktop picture is from InterfaceLift:
http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/details/1895/smell_of_holland.html
It is one of a hundred or so photos taken from IL. Alas, not all of them are as colorful as this one.

The video is "Weird Al" Yankovic's latest "Craigslist". It's a style parody of The Doors.
See it here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R32aFmxL9HY)

Nice. I would probably turn the shadow on for the text because it renders much crisper if you do. Except that it then has a shadow, if you don't want one. (I wish GeekTool's shadow worked the same way as CSS with complete control over the color, spread and position. You could turn it to 0,0,0 and make it not show up, yet the text would render smoother.)

Wyatt
2009-09-06, 19:44
Oh, you were so right. I never tried the shadows, but that does make the text much sharper. I don't actually really notice that the shadows are there because I'm using such a light background. I'm really pleased with the way it looks now. Thanks!

Now I just need to think of a few more things I can use it for. :p

What?!

That's the "Sad Mac" error! You get that on any Old World ROM Mac if it has serious problems at boot time. The only times I ever ran across the Sad Mac icon was using an emulator like vMac; I never saw one IRL despite having several Old World Macs. The icon itself is of an original-style Macintosh, just the unhappy version of the Happy Mac icon that normally accompanied boot.

Ah, I have fond memories of the Happy/Sad Macs, and the bomb. Playing Enchanted Scepters, having errors occur just as I'm about to finally make it through the pyramid almost felt like part of the game play. Every move felt like rolling the dice - will the game crash, or will the voodoo doctor suddenly pop up and kill me again? Where is that last scepter, anyway? Why aren't there still Hypercard games?

My god, I really have to stop writing and read these damn articles for tomorrow!

I'm giving a no-icon desktop a shot. It's a huge shift from using GeekTool, but I'm liking it so far. In my dock, I only have Finder, Safari, Mail and TextWrangler on the app side and stacks for my home folder, applications and downloads.

It's a little strange at first, but I'm getting used to it. I'm pretty much using the Applications stack and spotlight as my app launcher, and I'm just opening Finder to browse for files. I do that rarely enough anyway that I don't mind the extra click.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I found a great new place for wallpapers yesterday in Dan Rubin's twitter feed. It's called Simple Desktops (http://simpledesktops.com/), and it's great for people who love minimalist wallpapers. I downloaded a bunch of them yesterday.

:p

I've been doing the above for about 9-10 months now (after a friend lost his phone and worried about what was suddenly out there for anyone to look at...e-mail, photos, contact info, map/address stuff, etc.). This wallpaper, along with the Passcode Lock enabled, makes me feel very safe with my iPhone "out in the world". It gives honest people two ways to contact me the minute they turn it on, but keeps prying types (or thieves) out of all my personal info. Best of both worlds: assists honest, helpful people, thwarts the snoops.

The above, along with MobileMe's "Find my iPhone" feature, makes going out for the evening, among crowds and visiting multiple places, nowhere near the worry or hassle it used to be. Hell, I almost wish I would lose the damn thing (or have it stolen), just so I could get a new one, guilt-free. :D

It was an awesome show. Even better that they picked me to go down in front of the crowd. :) I loved it. What's really funny is I was just playing along with the joking back and forth. The pirate by the boat asked what I was doing and the guy on shore with me said I was just singing (he was speaking for me of course). He then started to sing the teacup song and I instinctively did the moves for it. Thankfully one of the overpriced photographers were on hand to blackmail me into buying one of the shots from the booth. Totally worth it! It was a great time and my kid loved watching me make a fool of myself. Then again, so did the whole crowd. They were laughing hysterically at me.

I love that era of constructivism/suprematism/geometric abstraction, because for all their formal rigor, they still look so hand made, so painted. Unlike the later American pop influenced and minimalist stuff that goes for the untouched by human hands thing.

I often stick with the graphite theme of the current OS, but I came across this online. My two favorite colors (orange and green) and abstract/techie enough to appeal. Also, I'm trying hard - for the first time ever - to do without the hard drive icon in the upper right. I know it's not necessary, but it's just something I've had/clicked on for 16-plus years (getting in the habit of just clicking the Finder face in the Dock, or hitting Command+N). Just my Time Machine backup is the only thing on my desktop.

It's a constant work in progress and I wouldn't recommend using it as is. Edit it to fit your needs first. It's currently set up for exactly 1280x800 resolution so you'll have to fix the code that resizes the Bowlet and maybe move the calendar or remove it all together or whatever. I don't care.

Also you probably don't have the fonts I use. Google their names if you want them Qlassik is the one I use now. Otherwise it defaults to Helvetica Neue. If you change fonts you'll have to adjust the locations of things too as fonts are finicky.

Oh dear...

Welcome to AppleNova, FatChance! :)

A couple of other shortcuts you may like:

cmd-shift-3 takes a snapshot of the whole screen
cmd-shift-4 gives you crosshairs to select a portion of the screen
cmd-shift-4 and then spacebar lets you highlight and capture a window

By default, these all write a file to your desktop folder. If you hold also control when taking the snapshot, it'll put the image on your clipboard instead, allowing you to paste it into an image document in your editor of choice.
