I bought it from OSH a month ago. I've never seen a pitcherplant and there they were, right on the shelf. Just had to get one. I usually have horrible luck when it comes to tropical plants, but this one is thriving.

Nope, not a Konfabulator widget. It's Aquamon (http://nibs.arsware.org/AquaMon/) with this hint (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20010701191518268&query=hide+dock+icon) to make it dockless. (Scroll down to read the comment that allows it to work in Panther.)

Definitely.
Back when I was running dual displays (two old 14" CRTs, but yeah...) I double-screened the Mars panorama from Pathfinder. They're 1024x768, but still pretty cool if you've got dual displays. I had to put in my own gradient as the sky because the NASA shot didn't go up high enough, but you can't really tell.

Drop it in the Pictures folder. Then, the url is http://homepage.mac.com/username/.Pictures/filename[/img]

Even better, drop the image in the "Sites" folder on your iDisk and the URL will be shorter, like this:

homepage.mac.com/username/filename

I can't stand folders that start with a period/dot. Bothers the heck out of me.

its based on python and can take scripts...

its basically something that everyone who looks at proteins should (and does) use....

FYI, you don't need to fire up Grab.app to take snapshots of your screen. Mac OS X has several shortcuts:

apple-shift-3: capture screen to file
apple-shift-4: capture selection to file
apple-shift-4 then spacebar: capture window to file

Adding the control key to any of the above saves the image to the clipboard instead of a file.

Luca
2004-07-25, 15:30
For a while I used Grab anyway because command-shift-3 would add this weird gray artifact to the bottom of the image. They fixed that in 10.3.4.

Grab also has the option to output in different formats other than PDF, right? Although it generally takes just as long to open Grab and take a JPG as it does to do the short keystroke to take a picture, then export to JPG.

Oh, absolutely -- with all the moving around, it's really nice to drop your whole computer setup into a messenger bag or backpack (plus printer, if you don't print at the computer labs or Kinko's like I did). It won't take up half of a car's trunk, either.

And hi, I'm new here.

I like it, but what's wrong with your OS dude? It's funny looking! ;)

It almost does have an early OS X feel to it with the pinstripes and all, but the similarities don't reach far beyond that.

Really? Good.
I just played around till I got something that I liked . . . it just happened to remind me of Aqua. (which is scary, because I really don't like it when people mod Linux/Windows/anything to look like OSX)

Thanks for your input.

Yes, but you have the worlds most annoying dock style. Tiny icons with 100% magnification. Makes me want to puke...and I mean that in the nicest way :)

I must say, that is quite an impressive collection of apps. However, I think I would die if my dock were that crowded. Doesn't it annoy you to have it like that? For me, I only put the apps that I use regularly in my dock. Otherwise I just make a trip to the apps folder.

Yes, but you have the worlds most annoying dock style. Tiny icons with 100% magnification. Makes me want to puke...and I mean that in the nicest way :)Oh well - different streaks for different freaks, eh? ;)

Everyone has their own dock prefs (which is why it's an editable feature, right?) - and it's more like about 65% magnification - otherwise I couldn't tell exactly which app I'm selecting! Oh - and if you cram a ton of apps into the dock - it forces them to be all on one line - which makes them that tiny. ;) Besides, I have mine set as a pop-up - not permanent. I'm looking forward to the day when we can have 2-3 docks, or stackable docks, or piles or anything else we've been taunted with over the years and can't have yet!

I like having all the apps I use regularly right at hand and not have to fish around in a folder for them - ack! :err: Besides, I use them all - all the time and there is a method to my madness in organizing them along the dock in small groups (another nice thing to have would be movable divider bars along the dock, wouldn't it?). I just do a lot of different kinds of work - imaging, multimedia, sound, video, VR, painting, writing, animation, etc... not just one or two apps will even come close to meeting my needs! ;)

Ryan

You could set up folders with aliases to the applications, and put those folders in the dock.

You could have aliases to all your animations apps in a folder called "Animation". Put the folder in the dock, and then right-click, or ctrl-click, on the folder when you need one of the applications. It gives you a nice little menu of everything in the folder.

Just themed. Yeah, without a doubt. Work pays for the toys, it's just coincidence that i work from home. Guess my clients love me... and i love them too! Without them I think it'll be a PowerBook 12" and Combo - they're really cute! Normally, the third is connected to the PowerBook, 'cause moving from that to this is frustratingly small!

For visual effects and impressing visitors or non Mac users, I occasionally move it to the desktop and maybe show off a little. It's fun having something other's dream about! Don't you think?

so the iTunes visualizer works across all three screens? I didn't think that was possible...

nice image DrGruv - I notice finale and sibelius - what's your preference? Also, going to ditch the Konfab stuff once Tiger hits the streets?

DrGruv
2004-10-24, 00:38
Konfab. yes - probably will ditch kon. unless there are things that kon can do that tiger can't - I use lyricscraper kon widget A LOT, it goes out on the net and finds the lyrics to any song playing on itunes and can store them in a folder for later use (great for song writers!)

As far as the great music notation program debate, each have many things going for them... I have been a longtime user of Finale, but I don't use it on a regular basis. (every few months or less) I forget the submenus or where to find a particular function and it gets very frustrating.

Sibelius is very simple, easy and straight forward. I am able to produce small trumpet parts or pieces quickly. Yet most of my files are from the older versions of Finale (All my trumpet books etc..)

Finale saw the writing on the wall (too complicated and hard to use) and took some of the great ideas from Sibelius and put it in Finale. I did the first update on Finale to first OSX version, but didn't do the latest update. I will probably get it the next time around - maybe not though - for editing my files the current osx version of finale is fine.

Stupid little thing... for those users that have been using the program for years, I prefer the Finale font and can't get used to the Sibelius font. The differences are SLIGHT, but they are there - I'm so used to the Finale font - hard to change...

It doesn't count as cleaning if you just chuck everything in the a CRAP ON THE DESKTOP folder. :) :p

Still, given your past screen shots of your desktop, I commend your effort.

Jasoco
2004-12-11, 01:13
I do that all the time. It's easier. A lot of files I download don't have a real home for a while. So I chuck it all in an "Off the Desktop" folder for later. I have almost a gig of stuff with no home, even after going through and sorting things into their rightful places.

I suspect Tiger's "Smart Folders" and Spotlight will help tremendously. I can't wait.

Would it be possible to make an applescript that would allow me to drop a pdf (aka screen cap) on it, ask me to make a "thumbnail" selection and then convert both the thumbnail and whole pdf into pngs suitable for posting? (the actual post and upload of said images being automated would be nice as well, but I'd rather start slow...)

1) I need that source picture

2) how do you have 571 new emails!

3) I noticed you also have a desktop clutter folder

I'm using the beta version, which will expire on the 15th :(... it also has to stay open to update the picture, which really sucks. The pictures it makes are really cool tho...

I have 577 emails because I have 4 email addresses and am waiting for smart mail folders in tiger to sort my mail for me... I also have a bunch of other general folders that need to be sorted as well... ('04 election stuff, .edu stuff by club & semester, .mac stuff, shopping stuff... etc.) So I'd rather take the time to do it all at once. Most of it is automated email that I get for news (OCD ;) ) purposes, so its not like people are wondering if I fell into a black hole.

My desktop clutter folder is 7.48 gigs and has at least 3 or 4 other "crap goes in here" folders... I desperately need spotlight and smart folders.

Of course, the clock is done by the program Paul mentioned, but these are good too. :) They're also VERY useful if you ever do a space scene in 3D.

I was actually going to comment on that.

It's an old Audion skin. I remember using it back in 2001.

Unfortunately, despite being free, Audion isn't good for much these days since it won't play AAC/MP4 files.

Ebby
2004-12-14, 22:04
 Yea, It's Audion. I never heard of it before they released it for free. I tend to like it because its small and looks nice. It also uses less processor power than iTunes, but I don't care much on my G5. I don't have much music in AAC/MP4 so it still works and it can use playlists from an iPod. It also works great with net radio. I have nothing against iTunes, but having this as a startup item is better than opening a full window in iTunes.

My main display, hooked up to my Powerbook:
http://homepage.mac.com/ryantann/d-lcdscreen.jpg

My Powerbook's built-in display. Sometimes I run NetNewsWire on it, but I gave up on that. Maybe once Tiger comes in I can put it to use with Dashboard.
http://homepage.mac.com/ryantann/d-pbscreen.jpg

My Cube's display. I don't use it for much, but it houses my photo and music libraries, and most of my files, as it has a large hard drive, and my Powerbook only has 40 gigs. Its black simply because I was getting tired of a bunch of colors popping into the corner of my eye every time I went to a new song running off my Powerbook.

What is that you have bottom right, to control iTunes?

Jasoco
2005-02-01, 01:13
What is that you have bottom right, to control iTunes?A set of custom scripts written in AppleScript in a DragThing Dock with a set of Hot Keys to control iTunes as well. It's like a Konfabulator Widget, but without Konfabulator and all that memory overhead. (This is a 600MHz G3 iBook. I need as much free memory as possible. And since DT is running anyway, why not utilize it?) The iTunes icon actually hides or shows iTunes depending on if it's shown or not.

My first Mac mini fully custom shot. (http://jasoco.no-ip.com/data/ss/full/2005-02-06.jpg)

The HD icons are from the Matrix Rebooted icon set. The chair is the main HD, the MiniDiscs are my Backup and the two Jujitsu cards are my "Filing Cabinet". The bottom one is made by me. That's the iBook's HD. The iBook has been demoted to "Lounge Browser".

The Trash icon is also from Matrix Rebooted. I just liked how much more like a trash can it actually looks.

The Dock on the left as usual is hidden by click of mouse button 5. I'm going for colorful this time. I'll have to figure out some other place to put Natalie. http://www.dragthing.com
