Yum :)

I would put all my guitars and other instruments in my picture, but I would have to take like 4 pictures to get them all in. Haha.
That, and I don't have a "setup" currently...cause my new desk isn't here yet. So I'm baking my nutsack (hope that wasn't too graphic for anyone ;)) with this PB on my lap.

This is where I work. Three Macs (my 12"PB, 1Ghz MDD for Pro Tools, old 9600 for Sonic Solutions) and a PC for the email/database stuff.
I really need to clean up under the console, but I work in the dark all day, so I never noticed it until I took the pic. :D

NosferaDrew - nice work environment! Did you build that desk with the incline for that specific mixer/editing console (or whatever it is exactly) or can you buy desks such as these with a modifiable space to house any sized mixer/editing console?

I also like the built in 19" rack spaces at the back, but am I correct when I see that they are only 3 spaces high?

Very curious. :)

That was custom built for the Yamaha 02R digital console and that specific stage.
The stage is going to be upgraded significantly in the future. The 02R is out and we're dropping in a Digidesign Pro Control (http://www.digidesign.com/products/hd/control/) control surface to compliment the Pro Tools|HD system that I run.
The rack spaces are actually 4U high. Currently there is only an unused Dolby SEU4 Encoder (I have a Dolby 563 Surround Encoder on the credenza behind the mix position) and the head unit for the Lynx KCU in that area.
I don't really need much outboard gear since I do almost everything within Pro Tools.
Also getting rid of the monitor up front to be replaced by a overhead projector, the two LCDs will be replaced by a 20" Cinema Display since I have no use for the Sonic Solutions system (again, Pro Tools does it all).

The clunky PC has to stay unfortunately. :p

This is my setup at home. I have my Quicksilver G4 upgraded to 1.33 GHz with a bunch of other upgrades as well (1 GB RAM, two 80 GB hard drives, GeForce 3, DVD burner). There's also the 12" PowerBook G3... 233 MHz G3, running OS 9. I use it at work on the wireless network, for making presentations in my classes, and for running SETI@home when it's not doing anything else.

Xactly some nice gear - I think we might be from the same vintage. I loved seeing that old Alesis MIDIVERB II... I've still got a Proteus - in storage though, these days. ;)

Nice VDrums and mic, though!

Don't tell me you're just using GB to do all your audio work. No DP?

Btw, what keyboard/synth is that to the left of the picture?

Xaqtly
2004-05-28, 15:00
Thanks! Yeah that midiverb doesn't get much use these days. I use GarageBand a lot, but not exclusively. I also have Logic 6 and Reason. The keyboard is my trusty Korg M1, which will probably be replaced in the not so distant future, because I don't perform with it any more. These days all I really need is a basic controller.

Just e-mail it to me (my info is in my profile), I'll upload it to my .Mac folder and display it for you.

It certainly is. Those are mostly history texts too, so they're nice and heavy. Perched up the top, immediately above the main monitor is Bronitt and McSherry's Principles of Criminal Law, poised to give a whole new meaning to the majesty of Justice.

Yeah, I have too many books. I kind of have to pile them up. What you can't see are the other shelves, and the heaps on the floor. ;)

How well does that iCurve work? I'm thinking about one for my iBook.

pscates2.0
2004-08-20, 12:07
Yeah, it's the best $39 I ever spent (well, as far as you guys know... ;) ). Yes, sturdy as can be and I wouldn't go back to the "PowerBook on the desk" days again.

Has little "sticky" pads (not really sticky, just provide awesome grip) built into the arms, and my PowerBook doesn't budge. They do include, for worrywart types, two little quarter-sphere "bumpers" you can stick on the end of the arms, giving a little stopping point, for extra security/peace of mind. But I've had this iCurve for most of 2004 and I've never once worried about the PowerBook sliding off. It simply won't...those little adhesive grips really seem to snag the bottom of the PowerBook! But it's not truly "stuck on", because you can lift the PowerBook off and the iCurve doesn't come with it.

:)

Get one.

The iCurve, along with an external keyboard, made a HUGE difference in how I used my PowerBook. It instantly became a comfortable, fun-to-use computer, and my neck/shoulder pains went away almost instantly!

I've slid my PowerBook down an inch further to where I can't see the protruding arms...as I'm sitting at my PowerBook, I can't see any trace of the iCurve and it looks like the PowerBook is truly floating 6" or so off my desk!

:D

I highly recommend the Griffin iCurve! Made all the difference in the world...

I have a VGA converter/switch which is sharing both the 19" CRT and the lousy speakers between my old RH/W2K PC and the PS2. The Powerbook only has power and mouse (MX700) connected, the net connection is via the SMC router you see between monitor and PS2. Bad timing. I host my site from my home. And it's all connected via a LinkSys router. But of course, yesterday the Router's Firmware decides to give up. And in order to UPDGRADE it, I need a PC. And none of the damn PC's in this house will connect directly to the modem to download the damn firmware upgrade.

So until Dad comes home with the copies, I am without site.

Either way, I might be moving it all to an actual server soon. Sad, I can no longer use my "Powered by OS X" image. It'll have to be "Powered by Linux". But it's a great host.

http://www.jasoco.net is probably where it'll get moved to. Sadly, it was nice having it right on my computer. And has been over a year since I started hosting my own site, but time to move on. I'll repost the pictures when I am able to.

Up until now I had no problems at all. But I'm thinking it's time to move on. It's a nice host for 400MB for $4 a month and a boat load of features. OMG...that's BEAUTIFUL! :D :p ;)

http://homepage.mac.com/ryantann/desk.jpg

So there. :p

I haven't quite finished(obviously), but I did plug in my DSL modem and Airport, so I can use my eMac and Powerbook to get on the internet.

The tabletop is 30"x84". Plenty of space. The bookshelves are solid pine, bought for 100 each at a local furniture store. The top is birch plywood, with a pine trim around it. Nothing holding it together, but I need to add some support in the back, as it bends a bit because its too long to support itself.

I haven't added the shelves to the bookshelves yet(forgot where I put the things that hold them in place), and the third bookshelf has yet to be bought. Other than that, and a few desk accessories, not to mention finding new homes for everything, I'm done.

It's good to finally see your setup, LoCash. And it's good to hear that you moved back in. How's the heat and humidity in the ATL?

That pair of SGI widescreen displays does look nice. SGI were way ahead of their time with those. I remember an Internet cafe in Zurich that had dozens of them. I still don't understand why everybody started dumping them at relatively low prices some time after their introduction.

Ooo Ooo can I play!

Notice my 'Walrus' Dual G5 with pens to keep the DVD front open after British Airways tried out skydiving with it or something! The entire case is warped by about an inch. I actually use a pair of boxers (I don't wear anymore to balance one side of it, otherwise it rocks!) It arrived in Bangkok after being Air Freighted in it's original packaging but it had either been in a plane crash, or driven over by a truck - British Airways (the scum) won't tell me which!!!!!

It still worked when it was pulled out of the box though! Good old Apple!

The legal case still goes on!!! Hence I am still having to wait to get it fixed.

Could I ask tht everyone boycott BA and bombard their servers with SPAM until they cough up for their mistakes... Cheeers! :D

Wow, murbot...now THAT is a very nice computer! I dig the Hulk's comment at the end (should've put it in a comic book balloon).

;)

Does it (the iMac) weigh much?

I saw my first real-life iMac G5 this past weekend at CompUSA in New Orleans. It was the 17" combo drive model, and it seemed really heavy. But it was truly gorgeous, further confirming the fact that NONE of Apple's staged PR beauty shots truly do their gear justice. They don't capture the sleek, glossy sheen and the thin clear acrylic casing. And even the Leno chin on the 17" doesn't appear so huge and offensive in real life.

Keep this one until AT LEAST MWSF, murbot! :)

Nice pics Murbot - good to see you finally got it! (Mine's not due for dispatch until next week some time <Drums fingers>).

The wireless combo you've got set up really show off how good it looks without wires. I've already got the bluetooth mouse (for my iBook) & I'm now thinking I should shell out for the keyboard & use them both on the iMac. The less wires coming out the back of that thing the better. My existing iMac has every single port full plus a USB hub.

This time around I'm plugging the printer direct into AE Basestation, using AE in Mac instead of Ethernet cable & buying the BT keyboard & mouse will free up 2 of the USB ports. That's 4 less crappy cables & four times the hi-tech coolness :D . Still means I'll have four wires in the remaining ports but that's better than 8.

Man, it feels good to work at a Mac-friendly company! :D Oh, and did I mention that we use a few Xserve RAIDs (among various other non-Apple hardware) in the local server room too? Yeah, we just got a couple more recently.

Brad, is that a Blueberry or Indigo iMac? We have a "five fruits" 400MHz Blueberry DV model at my job and it's much lighter/more turquoise-looking than the rich, deep blue of the Indigo.

Might just be the lighting in that pic.

Yeah, those were really nice models, those iMacs released in the summer of 2000 (Indigo, Ruby and Sage).

After all those months (all of 1999 and the first half of 2000) with the bright fruit colors and accessories, the deeper, richer colors in that new line-up (especially the Ruby!) were a cool change.

I always thought the Sage model (http://www.macobserver.com/article/2000/07/images/new_sage_imac2.jpg) was gorgeous. Just the slightest hint of cool mossy green. Those models just didn't seem to make much of an impact, sadly. And eventually gave way to the  Blue Dalmation and Flower Power designs. :D

Paul
2004-11-08, 00:46
Yup, that 2000 summer lineup had some nice features and price points... (first $799 mac, "pro" keyboard and mouse)
I got my now defunct (http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?p=37833#post37833) $999 indigo way back then.

I also have some pictures finally!
My charger is still broken, but my brother took some pictures of my cousin crashed car (he is fine) and there were some extra exposures left. He happened to take pictures of both my iMac setup and where I use my TiBook the majority of the time to waste the roll. He also got a Kodak picture CD (by accident) so now I have .jpgs of them that I can post.

This shitty setup pic could be attributed to a messy office at work, the fact that I was wrapping birthday presents for my daughter, or the fact that someone has a stack of catalogs in here that I couldn't resist setting my PowerBook on.

It could also be attributed to the fact that murbot is on a strict health kick and has sworn off the sauce for a couple of days now, and I'm just not use to functioning sober. Oh sweet beer, I pine for you.

Stacy, nice mod! Blue lightbulb paint? Does the apple just pop off or do you have to detach other components to do that?

Of all Apple computers I like the small iBook's looks best, really. I am surprised people don't mod them more - not that they need modding, but they are so neutral that many kind of alterations would work.

It is very, very easy to pop the lid off of the LCD on an iBook. You can do it with the machine on so you can test the mod. I basically put a blue colored gel over the light (after cutting away the diffuser that is already on there). I couldn't find a legit gel, so I made mine with inkjet transparency paper. I've changed the color a few times, and realized it needs to be darker than you think. I just wish the case was like the old G3 cases, where you could strip the paint and paint the inside.

Nah, when I had that setup, it was connected to an 8" TV.

I just wish the case was like the old G3 cases, where you could strip the paint and paint the inside.Ah! The G4's come with color through and not coat! I didn't know this. It's good that I wasn't considering the project earlier than in a few months :\
Then again... I wonder if the lid covers are compatible between G3 and G4? Because I could definitely switch them around and I was looking to only mod the cover in any case.EDIT: New pics:
...Table and iBook. Looks good. :) My mom has a similar minimal-iBook setup with just computer, mouse, mousepad and cable modem. I have various other pieces of hardware and a messy desk otherwise as well.

The iBook back looks easy to get off, but what tool do I need? In other words, what size Torq do I have to find? I'd LOVE to do this ASAP. It looks so cool. (I also have the older iBook with the removable paint. So I'd love to do a paint job eventually.)

Let me check, but I believe it's a .5 mm hex wrench. I used a guitar pick to get in between the bezel and the back.

Thought I would post a pic in here... seems like a while since I did.

Apologies to those who might expect me to show off a new PowerBook, or a nice little iBook & Mini 1-2 punch as my new setup. I'm afraid those days are over, my friends. Dwindling free time, active kids, never ending work on the house, and of course, finances, have all conspired to kill the murbot you all knew in years past.

Behold the computer I will likely have for the next couple of years at least, the mighty Dual 533MHz Power Mac G4.

http://homepage.mac.com/murbot/.Pictures/my_setup_thumb.jpg (http://homepage.mac.com/murbot/.Pictures/my_setup.jpg)

I've had it since the beginning of the year. It has 1.25GB of RAM, a 7200RPM 120GB hard drive in it, and a Maxtor 160GB FW drive up top. It also has a PC-flashed 64MB video card in it, that Luca (that god of a man) let me have for $10 shipped. Oh, also a LaCie 52x FW CD-RW on the desk.

She runs perfectly, and I'll have it until I can't say that any longer. The one thing I will try and get is a nicer display, but I have lots of other shit that needs to be bought for the house... blah, blah, blah. I'm secretly packing away a few bucks here and there. Might pick up an internal SuperDrive for her this summer for backing up all of the DVDs that my kids like to ruin.

I hope you enjoy my arty photograph. I decided to use some advanced camera tilting techniques to spice it up. If you are a little confused by it, just try tilting your head to the left a little, until it seems to be on the same plane as the desk in the photo. You'll get a better idea of what it looks like in real life. :p

Simple, boring, but does the trick. I guess you could say minimalistic. As long as it runs 10.3 ;)

The iBook G4 is sitting on a Targus CoolPad and online via neighbor's wireless network. The cat 5 supplies internet to my 486 peecee (i only keep it for SETI@Home ). The USB dongle recieves a signal from a Microsoft Wireless Mouse (about the only thing they do well). The USB cable goes to my under-desk hub, which connects to camera, printer, CoolPad, and Palm. The VGA cable goes to a 15" HP monitor next to bed (for watching movies and staring at iTunes' visualizer). The audio cable goes to a threesome of Creative speakers from Staples.

atomicbartbeans

Hooking a Cinema display to a PC is akin to dropping a 6-liter V8 into a Pinto.

Ditch the PC, man!

atomicbartbeans

You don't even have an external mouse? How can you possibly get anything done?

Indeed I do, it's just off-camera. I mentioned in the post that it's a Microsoft Wireless Optical notebook mouse. This is the only thing Microsoft does right, and the only Microsoft product I would ever buy.

By the way, the trackpad isn't that bad if you have iScroll.

Luca
2005-04-08, 19:37
Actually, that analogy implies that:

1) The display is equivalent to the car's engine, which isn't true. It's more like the furnishings, luxury features, and trim.
2) A PC is overall a lot like a Pinto.

If you want to use a car analogy, a better one would be to say that a PC is like a Pontiac GTO - it might be fast, but it's ugly, unrefined, and unreliable. Using a cinema display with one is like putting leather seating into one.

Believe me, I've seen MANY car analogies over the years :D

EDIT: Whoops, didn't see that you had the mouse there. I guess the receiver is hidden under the desk. That's pretty nice. If I ever get around to posting my setup (I'm lazy... :p) you'll see I don't really have any place to hide my MX1000's receiver. Since it acts as a charger for the mouse, I want to leave it on the desk. On the other hand, the MX1000 only requires a couple hours on the charging dock every week or two.

atomicbartbeans
2005-04-08, 19:51
MX1000? Schweet. I almost sprung for logitech's new $80 notebook mouse, but opted for Microsoft's cheaper version (I also liked the shape (http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=039fe04c-b5f6-4196-acec-4464365449cb&type=ovr) of it). :D

Luca
2005-04-08, 20:19
I've heard bad things about that Logitech portable mouse. I read a review of it (just for fun, I don't have a notebook so there's no reason to buy a miniature mouse) and it mainly criticized the mouse for being uncomfortable, noisy (supposedly it makes a noise whenever you use the touch-sensitive scroll pad), and too expensive for what you get. If I had a notebook I'd rather get a simple corded USB mouse. No need to worry about making a connection or batteries or anything. But that MS one looks okay.

The MX1000 is very much a desktop mouse. It would be terrible for use with a laptop, with the clunky base station. It's also really big, and the tracking performance would suffer too much if offered in a Bluetooth version. On the plus side, the battery lasts a super long time and it's very comfortable.

Uh... umm... what they don't know can't hurt 'em ;) . Besides, the average 70-year old doesn't give 3 deuces who uses their connection, so I don't feel guilty or anything. especially when:

1. They themselves get online approximately once a month, and only stay on for 10 minutes, because they think that radiation from their wireless router can give them cancer (they intentionally keep the router in the basement, far from where they sleep... also they never go near cellular/cordless phones). It seems like a waste of bandwidth not to be used more often.

2. There's currently no laws/legislation about wardriving/using another's connection etc. Besides, it's an open router.

3. My parent's don't want to drop $49/month on road runner (they use dial-up... eeeww), and I need my bandwidth fix. It just feels so good to be able to send 200-meg home movies to friends at a minutes' notice. :D

All you need is a tripod, Photoshop and instructions (http://www.macmerc.com/articles/Graphics_Tips/286). The background doesn't make the process any harder. As log as the screen/laptop can be moved from its spot without disturbing any of the objects. Oh, and you need a camera too.

Yeah, I know I need to work on the furniture. I want the desks with those wheels so that they can be moved around easier. Both of those computer desks are pretty sturdy and have been holding my machines and accessorie well. I like thse IKEA-esque furniture. About those PCs, I have sinned. I basically use my HP notebook for MS Money for money management, Compaq Preasrio (my first notebook I bought ever) for, well, just surf webs when I feel like it. But, 95% of my time with computers at home is with my PBs. The Dell is my work PC and it is a work horse weathering daily beating as I am in sales and am on the roads most of the time.

I've done a lot with my setup in the past couple weeks, so I figured I'd post an update.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/atomicbartbeans/ComputerSetup.jpg

First, the computer is a 12" iBook G4 running both its display and the external 15" CRT (spanning like it should). The room is dark except for the rope lighting around the tube-frame of the desk. It also goes directly under the desk where the keyboard is, which lights up the keyboard nicely. There's also a Targus CoolPad, printer near bottom (with Apple logo sticker), Creative speakers (subwoofer on shelf behind printer), Apple keyboard, MS mouse, and (most importantly) duct tape.

On the other side of the room, I have another desk with a Powermac 6100 running system 7.5.5, and a peecee running '98, which I keep to throw things at when somebody says "I don't like Macs".

Not the most high-end setup, but at least I'm not in danger of spec whore-hood.

and here's some detail pics....

http://everymoment.org/images/mysetup-g4desk.jpg
my g4 desk, (and my powerbook which is on the other desk) printers, scanners, surround sound receiver (both the g4 desktop and the g5 are hooked up to the receiver, and another one in the living room), hula guy from hawaii, danish flag from danmark (duh), my stash of printer paper

http://everymoment.org/images/mysetup-g5desk.jpg
my g5 desk (not a bad desk for $10 from a rummage sale. heh)... holding my 30" cinema display, my 17" powerbook (with isight... which is actually connected to my g5... but if i put the isight on my monitor it just shoots right over my head. :-) ), my stash of blank cds and dvds, air in a can and cleaning solution. also behind the powerbook is my three external hard drives, my digital/analog video converter, card reader for my digital camera, and a bunch of other random stuff.

and yes.. that is a powerstrip taped to the wall....

http://everymoment.org/images/mysetup-betweendesks.jpg
between the two desks is my g4 tower. 'old faithful' i should call it. it has survived 6 years of use from me (and i bought it used... heh). also a mess of cords which have GOT to be a fire hazard!

No matter what I did I could not manage to get the monitor picture to come out well. Does any photography-minded person want to explain what might be the prob? I don't really understand all the white balance etc. settings, but I tried about all of them including "custom". This best result was on automatic white balance. Flashes butchered everything in sight so after a few tries I went to no flash.

Outside is cloudy but reasonably bright. The "flame" is a reflection of my paper lamp at the back of the room.

Well, that's a very tricky setup to photograph. You have a dark foreground with a bright background, and a light source in the foreground as well. Gather less light, and the background and monitor look fine but the rest is dim and difficult to see. Gather more light, and the monitor and window appear blown out. If you just use full auto settings, your camera's light meter will go way up and dim down the picture a lot (by reducing aperture and exposure time).

Ideally, you'd add a couple diffused spotlights to illuminate the foreground. That way you could take a super short exposure and still gather enough light. The point is it's too dark inside to take a good picture. The flash will light up the foreground and leave the background alone, but it'll probably make the monitor hard to see in addition to generally messing up the image quality. And of course gathering more light would just mean the background would get blown out.

Just a quick note to say that I'm on the same computer I've had since the start of the year. Hell has officially frozen over. :)

That's also a very bright picture on the monitor. So like luca said, anything you can do to fill the foreground is good. But a second step I'd take is turn the brightness on the monitor down. That will help equalize the differential (contrast) between the light and dark places in the foreground, giving a better exposure all around.

In fact, I thought quite a few of us had one… I could be wrong.

Here's the desk I work at. Nothing too fancy, just a Mac Mini and a Dell 2005fpw display. My powerbook will arrive tommorow, and I'll update the pic then :)

And a neat desk Koodari - how rarely do we see that :lol:I had just spent half a day cleaning and organizing things. Still have a persistent cough from all the dust there was before, so I was kinda forced to act. :D

Even the tape and folder on the desk were there because they had just been used to tidy up the cables.

The keyboard (http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/en/hhkeyboard/images/200B.jpg) is the newest piece of equipment, taken into use on the day of the photo.

I also like the view. This is an university campus, built before the land had much value. Now the city has grown enough that if somehow available, this spot would fetch an astronomical price.

This is my rather lame setup. It is getting a major overhaul soon though - the aging iBook will be replaced some time later in the summer, probably with a Mac mini and 20" display, and the iPod will be upgraded to a 40Gb or 60Gb possibly, depending on how the 5th gen looks.

The CD rack looks rather empty at the moment as this is only about a third of my CDs - the rest are in an identical rack on the other side of my living room.

The desk (and the desktop) are always this tidy! The empty dock below, and to the right of the iPod is my camera dock, but I had huge trouble getting the camera in the dock while I took the photo, you wouldn't believe how much hassle that can be.

I didn't even notice that. I like it, and the blue thing at the bottom. They both set it off so it looks much better than just a whole shelf of CD's. Need some posters on your walls though. Unless they're too high up.

IKEA rules. That's where my desk is from, and my dresser, and my bedstand, and my bookshelf, and a shelf in my room, and my chair.

I'm a total IKEA whore, but I'm not ashamed of it. It's not the highest quality, but it's great when you're on a budget.

Haha, how true that is. Almost all of the stuff I've purchased from IKEA (and I've bought a LOT of stuff from them) have either broken or were already broken when I unpacked the goods on their first day. Well, not broken in the sense that they're not functioning, but "broken" in that there's always some part of any given item that's damaged, whether it would be a crack here, or a huge scratch there. Their quality control is pretty low.

And for some reason, I keep going back.

One tip: never buy light bulbs from them. ;)

It's as sharp as I can expect shooting without support, but even in this best version there is white "burnout" on the monitor. The camera is an Ixus 430. Does any photography-minded person want to explain what might be the prob?

The burnout is a result of the relatively small size of the pixels on your ixus 430. The sensor on your camera measures at 7.18 x 5.32 mm. With 3.8 million pixels (approx 4mp) in that little area, you can imagine how small each sensor is.

Now let's make the analogy that each pixel on the sensor is like a bucket in the rain with a cover (the shutter in this case) on top. When the shutter on a camera is released, light goes in and hits he sensor. With our analogy, the cover would come off and water would fill the bucket. The "burnout" occurs when the 'bucket' is 'full' of 'water'. That is, there is too much light for that one pixel to handle.

Now let's look at digital SLR's. Wanna know one reason why they take better pictures? simple: bigger sensors. Imagine a 4mp DSLR camera. As DLSR's come, they have a much larger sensor size. The new 350D has a sensor size of 22.2 x 14.8 mm, so each sensor (bucket) is about 300% larger. Given the same exposure times, each sensor on he 350D will not have to handle as much light, and is therefore better able to prevent any "burnout" because the 'bucket' is less likely to fill up.

Sorry if my explanation was a little unclear. The folks from Canon do a MUCH better job of explaining these things in a way people understand :|

It never occurred to me that the sensors in the better cameras are bigger - I knew the optics were and stopped the train of thought there.

Here's my setup, at least until I go to college in September. Wow, I never realized how messy it looks. It's cleaner from up close. And yes, I really am using a couple Mac IIci's as a stand for my Powerbook. I figured it would look cooler than just adding another table there. :)

Yeah, the Mac II's are good for that, since they're really rectangular and flat, like bricks. It would be really awesome if you could make a full-size table out of those, though. I remember seeing a picture on the Internet of someone who made a chair out of Mac Classics - it looked really uncomfortable. ;)

Had to tweak a little contrast and brightness so you could actually see the beast under the desk, which in turn washed out the window, but there's the tradeoff when I only have 30 seconds and no access to Photoshop.

Bryson -

It's 2x20" monitors. Economically, it made the most sense to me: there was no way I could afford 2 23" displays, and 2 20" displays gives me far more screen real estate than one 23" (341.8 sq. in. as opposed to 226.1 sq. in.). And 2 20"s cost only $100 more than one 23". Easy decision!

That said, if you can afford 2 23" displays... (drool)

well I had the same delema at teh begining, however it was easly solved when I talk till I could not talk anymore. Althought YES it is more real estate, A higher resolution, 1080i and lastly it is HD, totally worth it. I have two 23"'s and love them. I think that it depends on What you are going to be using the system for, it will matter in the future in what you use it for. If you see yourself needing HD and higher Res. that I would say bite the bullet and get the two 23'' displays. However if you are not making money off of your sysem, 20" will be fine.

Well, all three of your points are actually the same one since HD = higher resolution than SD. That's all High Definition is - more pixels. And the 23" model is actually 1080p (that's a plus, though).

That said, the 20" is 1050 lines of resolution and thus is HD compliant (since a lot of what is called HD is in fact 720p). "True" HD is 1080p, sure, but 720p is as High Definition as many HDTV sets out there.

I also don't understand why someone who is 'making money' off their system needs the 23" models  musicians, web designers, and writers don't necessarily need 1080p to do their work.

Actually, I disagree. These are the people who are trying to get their images and videos as good looking as possible want the best screen they can get.

Imagine photo editing on an old, faded dark screen out of the Win95 Era I'll call it.

It's the same type of comparison with comparing your regular screen to a HD one.

Engine Joe
2005-06-27, 16:56
Argh. I'm not saying that people don't have reasons to want 1080p + screens!

Yeesh!

All I'm saying is people doing work other than HD video - now follow me here - don't necessarily need that scale of resolution. If you're working with standard definition video, having a screen that has more than 1080 lines of resolution will do you no good. You can have it if you want it, but you don't need it.

The person said you are fine with 20" screens so long as you don't make money off your system. That is patently untrue - I make money off my system as a musician, and having 1080+ is unnecessary. That was all I was trying to point out - that the statement was overbroad. Note the examples I used (even in the part you quoted). There are plenty of professional applications for using computers that don't require 1080p HD. Just as there are plenty that do.

Can we drop this now? It's a totally tangental discussion to the point of this thread, and frankly it sounds more like a communication issue amongst the posters than an actual substantive debate. :)

(edit: added smiley because I meant this concilatorially and in reading it back I realized it actually sounded fairly exhasperated)

People like dealing with generalities, when someone says they can stick with 20" if they don't do professional work, it's a small market they are discussing. Plus people assume that since Macs are used, it's either video, audio, or graphics work being done on the platform.

Either way the argument is flawed, heck I'm even thinking about 2 30s for my home lab.
