Getting better but the Java support is still buggy as hell. Don't even try to use a Java chat client or you will get locked into the session and will have to force-quit. Native HTML text widget is still not implemented either, so basically any type of forum where you're communicating with others, is not the right place to use Camino.

Go vote for this bug (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163468), this bug (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=229157) and most of all... THIS. (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148098)

So you want me to check out a browser that I can't surf AI with? :\

No thanks, for now at least. I'm just gonna stick with Safari and be a happy camper. :)

Well, it's worth testing out on your favorite sites where you're not required to chat or type... just to see how it renders things. Also to see how you like the interface. The main point at this stage is to give Pinkerton your feedback so when 1.0 shows up it is a real competitor for Safari.

What's the big deal about the text entry widget? It's a bit slow on these forums but that's because of the animating gifs that cause a slowdown in Safari too, and it couldn't get much more native.

Don't get me wrong, fully native Cocoa text-widgets like in Shiira and Safari, or better yet like those in Omniweb would be cool, but it's not a showstopper as far as I can tell.

It's not native and it's not the smilies that slow it down. You'll notice on just about any forum board (smilies or no), the cursor will lag heavily as you type and will flicker in an erratic way when it's idle. It's a major kludge at this stage.

What's camino .8 rc1 and where do I get it?

Is this any different from camino 0.8? 0.8 has been out for a while.

RC means release candidate, if after some testing they find no major problems then that release candidate becomes the official release.

You can get the Camino 0.8 RC 1 here:
http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=4870

You may be getting confused because the 8.0 beta has been out for a while.

I love Camino but I still get these random lockups when I start it sometimes. It's pretty annoying because I've got to restart the Mac to get things going again. When it loads properly, damn is it fast!

Slow motion development...and still not there yet by all reports.

The final version is out this morning and it is a better release than RC1. Launches faster, loads pages faster and the text widget - while still kludgy - is not nearly as laggy on most sites I've tried. Still lots of Java issues so don't use it if you're cruising lots of Java stuff from day to day. Otherwise a very good stepping stone towards 1.0. Worth having in your apps folder IMO, even if not as your regular browser.
