ITS OFFICIAL: Jonathan Jansson (the developer of Mac DC++) has given up leadership of the Mac DC++ project. Anyone interested in trying to improve the current version please email him at jonathan.jansson@home.se. Put "Mac DC++ Developer", without the quotes obviously, as the subject.

In case you're confused when reading this, DC++ (http://dcplusplus.sf.net) is the open source client for the Direct Connect Peer2Peer file sharing network. That's the site for the Windows version, but since it's written in C++, it makes it possible to port the core to OS X, leaving only the GUI to be created to make it a genuine OS X app.

Below are some links to the currently available source code and the only publically released binary/executable.

Click here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/macdcpp/macdcpp-alpha-1.zip?use_mirror=voxel) to download the source for Mac DC++. There's also a binary of that available here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/macdcpp/macdcpp-aplha-1.dmg?download).

Thanks... and good luck.. Getting ahold of Jontathan is going to be hard... he takes days to write back... I don't know him in person but he's done that to me several times. lol

I'd have to say not. I used DC for a while but from my experience everyone that uses it is a little bitch. The program was irritating and the people that ran the little hubs were twats.

That may be true of some hubs, but not all... My hub for example has decent rules and people enjoy being in there... There are many Mac DC users on NMDC's feature request area that want a DC++ compatible client... So not everyone dislikes it.

I don't mind the regular Direct Connect, I just don't like that some hubs require DC++

Yeah exactly. That's why having a good DC++ client for OS X would solve that.

When I used DC++ for OS X (in X11) it didn't help at all. All the hubs sucked anyways.

I think you're confusing DCGUI-QT and DC++. One client (DC-GUI-QT) is based on the library called QT, which is a part of the KDE Desktop enviromnment... DC++ is written in C++ and is very portable. If a DC++ for Mac OS X were released, then our downloading possibilties would be plenty because most of the hubs out there REQUIRE that you use DC++ vs other clients. I hope that clears things up.

if i remember correctly, dc++, despite being in c++, is not very portable.

But that doesn't make it impossible to accomplish though... There's an alpha out and it almost works... Just needs some more functionality.

So, ShiggyMiyamoto, are you working on it right now?

not saying its impossible, just that its not as easy as it may seem. i haven't looked at the macdc++ port, maybe that one isn't as disgustingly coded.

No. I'm not. I'd be giving progress reports if I was. :) I'm just trying to help Jonathan get someone/some people to take over the project because he doesn't have any time to work on it right now.

ThuhFreak: If you have access to OS X take a look at MacDC++ and its code and tell me what you think...
