View Full Version : What do you want to do?

After a few Maker's and cokes my wife and I have been discussing the future. Talking about things we'd like to do. Anyway, I 'd love to start a record label and put out some cool records. When you're thinking what if? What would you like to do?
I have thought of opening a small retail business. I have a plan for a store that just might work in my community. I am not sure, however, that I want to buy myself the endless hours or the high risk. I’ve also thought of becoming the owner/operator of a small old-fashioned hotel/B&B – Fawlty Towers would be my model. :)

I've always wanted to run a really shitty convinience store. That's it. And some day I will. :)

Shitty is not hard to do. The one near us we call the WWCS - World's Worst Convenience Store - but you could call almost all of them that. By the way, my business idea would involve, among many other things, putting that store out of commission.

i thought over this question. sure i could detail my business ideals, or what i plan to do when i'm rich. but when you think about the question too long, you almost forget the important things. so here's my answer:
What do you want to do?
two chicks. same time.

What do I want to do?
1. Start a (good) band, and become at least mildly successful.
2. Be the best fire fighter in the world
I'm not a very complicated guy. I don't need much in life to make me happy. Sure, I have other goals, but they don't need to be mentioned here.

I see no reason in trying to make my convenience store anything special. If you carry the staples you'll do fine. Smokes, Salty Snacks, Pop, Milk, Porno Mags. That's all you need.
Part of the reason I want to own my store is to see if I actually am retail poison. Every store/shop/whatever I've ever worked has gone belly up. Remember when eatons re-opened? I think I single-handedly put the Ottawa store out of business. I started two-initiatives at that store that I think helped it demise; 1) I threatened to unionize the store, thus getting the management all in a tizzy, leading to layoffs of several dissenters (myself not inculded) and 2) after the failed attempt to unionize I was one of the founding members of the Zero Club, a very large group of sales staff that held daily competitions to see who could make the fewest sales.
I wonder if I'm strong enough manager to put up with myself.

With a history like that...you can't go wrong. ;)

Not all it's cracked up to be I'm afraid (no pun intended). I think I can speak for all of us in saying that. :D

I didn't realize that you had spent some time here in Ottawa.
Funny about the Eaton’s store. Actually, I had high hopes for it when it re-opened, since I like a good old-fashioned department store, with quality product and professional sales staff (i.e., everything Wal-Mart is not), and am willing to pay extra for it. Also, I live downtown, and I like to have choice in where I shop. Unfortunately, the merchandise at the relaunched Eaton’s concentrated a bit too much on the frippery, instead of basic, good quality merchandise and the sales staff were not helpful, when they could be found at all. (I think that they were all hiding from the customers.)
Too bad it did not succeed. It’s water under the bridge now, though – and I must admit I chuckle to think of InactionMan’s involvement in all of it.
Tell me when you open your convenience store and I’ll shop there: Each time I’ll buy a couple of small candies and pay for it with a $20. That’ll learn ya'.

yeah, I lived in ottawa for 2 years whilst going to school. As far as eatons goes, the entire staff had very high hopes for the store and we were willing to work hard for them. Then management started jerking us around so we all put in a concerted effort to run the place into the ground. I worked in mens wear so if you were looking for help there then its no wonder you couldn't find anyone to help you. We were the worst of the lot.
This thread is way OT! No posting from work! Only lurking!
Oh, and my store will have a strict no change policy. It'll just be considered gratuity.

Work in a profession that takes me overseas (preferably something government related) and surf where ever I go.
Quit making money for other people and start making money for myself. Need to start doing freelance design full time. Just so scary leaving the security of steady paycheck and cheap insurance.

I want to join another band. I wouldn't mind finishing an album and doing something with it, whatever that may be.
I wouldn't mind owning a pizza shop as long as the hours are reasonable.
I'm going to full time travel in an RV for a couple years just seeing what I see.

dude, if you have an RV that can time travel, you'll never need to work again.
at least, that's what it looked like the first time i read it.

Heh. That's a perfect example of what can happen when one inadvertently leaves out a seemingly-insignificant bit of punctuation, such as a "full-time travel" dash. :)

I like to cook, but only when I have LOTS of time in which to do it in a leisurely and totally enjoyable way.
Once I fasten onto a recipe I like, I love the challenge of perfecting it to the nth degree. I love creating my own recipes, though I haven't done nearly as much of that as I'd like.
Once I've built up a sizable repertoire of culinary offerings, it would be nice to share these meals with people who truly delight in the pleasures of good food.
I've thought of having a sort of clandestine restaurant here at my house. I could serve one table in the dining room, one in the living room in front of the fireplace, and two in the backyard. When my yard is in perfect shape, especially in springtime, it's like a paradise - not too large, enclosed by a canopy of trees, bushes flowering with an artistically-arranged palette of colors. It's like a lush and hidden glade, completely apart from the real world. :)
To make it easy, I could offer one particular meal (varying completely from week to week), composed of five courses, all of which would be absolute perfection and to-die-for. These "dining evenings" would only occur once a week at the most, say on a Thursday night; they (and the menu) would be scheduled 'weeks' ahead of time, and people would reserve weeks in advance for the specific meal that sounded great to them. Eventually these people would be regular customers, and they would know that the choice to provide them with outstanding food would be something I did when not travelling the world, or when not living in a Costa Rican cloud forest.
The whole point of this set-up would be to have the pleasures of cooking, of sharing good food with appreciative people, of adding a tidy sum to my income, but in a job that was completely on my own terms and on a schedule that appealed to me.
What I *really* would be doing is writing books. The dining evenings would be like a hobby kinda thing...something I did for the fun of it, but that was also profitable in a modest way. And if I felt like taking off for the south seas, I'd just call people a week ahead of time and say that the dining evenings would be "on hold" for a few months. :)

Someone (http://www.surrealgourmet.com/) already took your job. His solution was to bring the kitchen to the friends instead of inviting them to his house. I own his third book and we will be using it to make our 10th anniversary wedding/renewal of vows ceremony more interesting.

Ah well it's a different kettle of fish if you pay a couple of professionals to help you out.
