I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness (http://www.secretlycanadian.com/onesheet.php?cat=SC123) - Fear is on our sideGoddammit dviant. I was all excited on finding this a couple of days ago...and here I see you've already gone and posted it. You either need to stop finding so much good music or I need to pay closer attention to your links. ;)

(In my defense, you totally distracted me with the Silversun Pickups, and I forgot to check out your other links). :)

Rinôçerôse - Schizophonia (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=80869010&s=143441)
Wow that IS different. I've got an earlier one (before Music Kills Me) and it's more House/Dance oriented. Not sure what I think just yet. Funny about ILYBICD.. but hey it's easy to miss stuff in a 26 page thread. :D

Here's some other stuff I've been giving a listen...

Ambulette (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=129958664&s=143441&i=129958695) - The Lottery EP. Some good stuff I'm kind of addicted to it right now. It's basically Denali (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=79421326&s=143441&i=79421261) minus two members, but it's more upbeat and rockin'. She can really wail, I love her voice has a nice unique quality to it. If you're doing searches they were called Bella Lea (http://www.tweedmag.com/news.html?article=20050412091101) for a little while, theres some demos floating around.

Band of Horses (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=129649178&s=143441&i=129649316) - Everything All The Time. Have seem some praises of this lately. Jury is still out for me. I like it but I keep thinking they sound like a more-alternative/less-lo-fi Shins (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=3863054&s=143441&i=3863034).

TV on the Radio (http://www.tvontheradio.com/) - (unreleased album). Staring At The Sun (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=17804473&s=143441&i=17804453) was a great song on their last release I didn't find myself giving the rest of that album much of a listen. This one is grabbing me a bit more, the first song (Playhouses) (http://hype.non-standard.net/artist/TV+On+The+Radio) is every bit as catchy but in more of a punk way. Though the whole album is unclassifiable as expected, I would call this one more accessible. Not surprising as I think they moved from Touch & Go to Interscope.

Turn this thing around by El Pres!dente (http://www.el-presidente.co.uk/content.php).

One of the best bands to come out of Scotland for a while; besides Franz Ferdinand.

One of their songs was on the demo UMD that shipped with the PSP.

old school - Joe Jackson "You can't get what you want ('til you know what you want)"

Love the ambient drum sound, bite of the horn section, rhythm guitar part ... and the solos are tasty too.

Ryan... what is that from? Looking over my rather extensive list of Arcade Fire stuff (demos, 7"s radio sessions etc) I don't see that one?

My recent fav is Cities (http://www.yeproc.com/artist_info.php?artistId=10125&page=viewrelease&itemNum=CD-YEP-2117) - self-tited. Nice driving layered sound. The link gives a better description, but think Doves with a bit more shove. Another good one from Yep Roc label American Princes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=137442485&s=143441&i=137442504) - Less and Less. Just darn good straight up indie rock. The Editors (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=130234193&s=143441&i=130234263) newest is pretty good too but does suffer from yet-another-band-with-comparisons-to-Joy-Division-syndrome. Luckily I really like Joy Division. ;)

I was recently introduced by a friend to a simply awesome band called Little Birdy. I am OBSESSED!! But they're an Australian band, and they're not even very well known over here so I doubt any of you would have heard any of their stuff.

SO my top 3 this week are:-
Andy Warhol- Little Birdy
My Love's For Sale- Faker
The Tide- Spill Canvas

Would be interesting to know if any of you have heard of any of these bands. :p

Ryan... what is that from? Looking over my rather extensive list of Arcade Fire stuff (demos, 7"s radio sessions etc) I don't see that one? It's a live recording done in San Diego. The audio quality isn't that great, but it's still a great song. According to an Arcade Fire fansite, it'll be released on a new album sometime soon.

Catch a Man on The Rise - Doug Sahm  Tex-Mex Country Hippy music.
Texas Ranger Man, still Doug Sahm

I've been Reggaeton obsessed lately: Lo Que Paso Paso - Daddy Yankee, Ven Bailalo - Khriz y Angel, Acerate - Zion y Lennox, have been the favorites.

Any once else for reggaeton, or new dancehall stuff like TOK?

I take my cues for modern rock from this thread . . . ya'll are pretty sharp about good songs from less well known bands.

Xionja haven't heard much reaggaeton or new dancehall. Not sure if it's my cup of tea, I'm more for old school dub (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=3180044&s=143441&i=3179984) myself.

For those that like the low-key-girl-singer sound you should give Jane Weaver's Seven Day Smile (http://www.angryape.com/reviews/2006/03/jane-weaver-seven-day-smile) a listen. I hadn't really heard of her before but apparently this is actually some older stuff of hers, and her backing band on this album is none other than the almighty Doves. Nice lazy day songs, some sultry, some catchy. Some of it reminds me of Mazzy Star some of it Zero 7. I tracked down some of her newer stuff but prefer this one. You can hear a couple tracks from this release on her my space page (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=38220638). Check out 'Seven Day Smile' and 'You're a riot'.

Blues Explosion - Extra Width. Given their recent bouts of sucking huge ass, it's easy to forget how awesome they used to be. This album rocks.I agree. Orange was the last one I really liked. Saw them during that tour, they were awesome still ranks up there with one of the best shows I've seen, Jon Spencer is quite the showman.

anyone into harder stuff like the fall of troy, underoath, chiodos?I'm not so much into the new noise metal core stuff but there are a few I like. Really more into heavy stuff that borrows from old school like High On Fire (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=67965407&s=143441&i=67965176) or Mastodon (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=65923490&s=143441&i=65922968). Now it's :
Whipping Post by Zappa.
I read once that Frank learned Whipping Post because during the 70's it was considered cute to holler out for Whipping Post at shows, I heard someone call for it at a Keith Jarrett (jazz) concert.
Zappa said he got so sick of people calling for it they just learned it so anyone calling out for it would have to sit through it.

At the very least download it and give a few listens. I promise you won't be disappointed. It's *much* better than their recent releases. I'd say it's up there with Vs. It's not 10 or Vitalogy but it's definitely way better than I expected. It's still slightly political at times but it's not an "in your face" kind of thing. More like the "politics" of a song like "Betterman" than the politics of a song like "Bush leaguer", if that makes any sense.

I just finished listening to Donald Fagan's new album Morph the Cat (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?s=143441&i=129021887&id=129022416) and I think that my early favorite is the longest song (7:39), called The Great Pagoda of Funn (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?s=143441&i=129022143&id=129022416), it's got a good hook and the laid back sound that Fagan puts into his albums. Looks like Mr. Becker took a rest on this one~

Also picked up The Hardest Way to Make a Living (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?s=143441&i=145543924&id=145544175) by The Streets. Going to have fun chewing the lyrics on that one.

For shame...:) Yes, and I will say like it much more than the last one, but I haven't fully given it it's due yet because.....

....nowadays I must rejoice and mourn in unison, as the very last Grandaddy album came out recently as well. Just Like the Fambly Cat (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=152659332&s=143441) is reminiscent of both the excellent The Sophtware Slump (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=5518793&s=143441) yet takes a few cues from the more modern guitary Sumday (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=4834897&s=143441). I really like it...and I'm really going to miss these guys.

Went to a Doc Watson concert last night, Amazing! No words could do justice. He played with his grandson a little while too, it was awesome. North Carolina mountain music, you guys have it good down there! Only been to NC once, a few months ago, but I loved everything about it. What other old time/bluegrass musicians are really good?, anyone from NC (I know we have a few) have an idea?

As what I'm listening to right now, Preston Frank and Family. Awesome stuff.

While Aesop is on iTMS, this song isn'tAesop is amazing, Labor Days might be my favorite album, or at least in the top 5.Best CD they ever put out... and on that note... their new shit sucks in comparison.Indeed, I saw them last year, and the only songs anyone knew were Keasby Nights, On and On and On, and 1234, 1234

I was working on a project using a couple of clips from the Boy From Oz. Needless to say I have listened to the soundtrack all week. That can't really be Hugh Jackman's voice, can it? Oh well, the credits tell me it is.

Not that I don't like musical theatre, but I have been meaning to make a counter-measure cd. A cd where nothing has an overture.

I don't think I'll ever look at Wolverine the same way again.

I just got Buck 65's This Here Is Buck 65. I guess it's his best of album. For those that don't know Buck 65 (aka Rich Terfry) is a Halagonian (someone from Halifax, Nova Scotia) MC that's been kicking around for the last decade or so. He's had a couple of semi-hits in Canada and been showered with much critical praise. So I guess he signed a deal with one of the majors and released this compilation album. Sadly, my two favourite songs are kind of sucking because he re-recorded them for the album. The two songs are The Centaur and Pants on Fire. Both have gone from beyond awesome to just better than really good.

Back in the day Buck 65 had a really nasally delivery and music had a really cool hollow scratchy feel. The new shit is all gruff and acoustic, like he's trying to get the Beck crowd. His delivery is still great but these two songs were so much better before. And worst of all, he changed the lyrics on The Centaur from "I have plenty to say but nobody listens/Becaue my cock is so big and the end of it glistens" to "I have plenty to say but nobody listens/Because my clock is so clean and the hour hand is missing."

What the fuck. Thanks for killing the best line, Rich.

Yeah, so I'm actually listening to the original versions of the songs. If anyone bought the above mentioned album and wants to hear the originals just PM me and I'll shoot them over to you. They rule.

Delayed response. :) I don't have the live album. I'm actually not a huge Radiohead fan. At least not compared to some fans. I've heard from a friend of mine (who happens to be one of those huge fans) that the Thom Yorke album is a steaming pile of poop.

I've been listening to "When You Were Young," the first single from The Killers' second album, Sam's Town.

I know you all hate them, but I like their over-the-top, loud-and-proud, Vegas-in-audio-form sound.

I was worried when word hit that they would be dropping their vaguely British, "New New Wave" style in favor of a more American, Bruce-Springsteen-inspired style, but if "When You Were Young" is any indication, they'll still have that over-the-top, loud-and-proud, Vegas-in-audio-form sound. They seem to have changed their style without alienating their fans - always a hard thing to do, when you're following up a triple platinum debut. (I'm obviously speaking from experience here.)

And if The Killers continued their knack for picking their worst songs for their singles, then Sam's Town will be good, indeed.

Stream it for free at www.islandrecords.com/thekillers.

So some guy named his solo project Final Fantasy and won the prize for best musical act in Canada. He beat out some pretty big names like Wolf Parade, Broken Social Scene and New Pornographers.

That's what I'm listening to, Final Fantasy's award winning album, titled He Poos Clouds. And for all of your listening enjoyment, this is This Lamb Sell Condos (http://tehaldo.googlepages.com/03thislambsellscondos.mp3), a song about an actual smarmy Toronto real estate salesmen. :D

Yes. It's fantastic (of course). It's not really comparable to anything he's done in the past...think the musical variety of a Mr. Bungle album (though it doesn't sound like Bungle at all) mixed with his vocal style from FNM (kind of). Not a lot of Fantomas or Tomahawk influence as I hear it. It's just...different. And really really good. :)

Wish For - Delaware (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=160223436&s=143441&i=160223528) Very mature sound with a catchy chorus, also a good one for relaxed listening.

Apparently she's huge in the UK but hasn't quite made it over to this side of the drink. She writes some terrific, completely disposable pop songs that are just way too much fun to listen to. Though I estimate she has a very short shelf life.

One of the ways I like to learn about new things is to look at what people who like similar things. For The Decembrists, I looked at what others who bought some Flaming Lips bought and then what those people bought. Sort of my own little social networking. :)

She's the worst kind of British white trash I've come across in the charts, and she's only famous because daddy is rich.

The first line of follow up single is:

Riding around on my bike all day cos the filth took away my license

N.B. 'The filth' is a term for the police used by some of Lily Allen's type.

I guess you could say I don't like her....

I guess because I control how much British pop I consume I can put her way up high on my list of things that are awesome. But the same applies to the Arctic Monkeys whom I'm sure many Brits despise. I missed Lambchop's set at one of the last shows I went to. I was bummed. (It was M. Ward headlining, if you're interested). My friend lent me a Calexico CD that I haven't gotten around to listening to yet.

I can't even remember what I was looking at at the time I bought my first Ian McEwan. Just happenstance more than anything, I think.

I think she's great. And I am quite confused by turbulentfurball's assesment of her..
I listened to her on BBC Radio 1 being interviewed last week and she's a riot.
By the way. Using 'The Filth' to describe the police has more to do with the style / genre of her music, not her personal views.. But then British traffic cops are 'filth'.

She actually has a pedigree that is not so bad. Her Dad is a lovelly guy, and she is just a fun loving young pop wannabee.. I think she will go far, but I do think that her shelf life may be quite short once the novelty of her style starts to wear off.. However, she may yet change her style and prove people who think that, wrong.

Ivan's an interesting cat. His late-80's solo stuff was quite different from what he plays today (though I enjoy both thoroughly).

He's played keyboards with a lot of bigtime musicians including Mick and Keith, and is certainly the only person I've ever met who survived (but just barely...) a short stint as Keith Richards' best drug buddy.

http://www.ivanneville.com/biography.html
Ivan moved to Los Angeles where he expanded his musical prowess and gained an overall no-nonsense attitude to his approach at writing, performing and recording music. It wasn't long before he became a pivotal member of Bonnie Raitt's band, Rufus, Keith Richards & the Xpensive Winos and the Spin Doctors. Ivan launched his solo career with the acclaimed If My Ancestors Could See Me Now and, several years later, followed with Thanks. In between solo records, Ivan wrote, performed and/or recorded with Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, The Rolling Stones and other major artists.

Here's a really great recent interview he gave:
http://offbeat.com/artman/publish/article_1060.shtml
I was going to sit in with the Rolling Stones at Giants Stadium on the Voodoo Lounge tour. I was on that record and Keith’s band—the Xpensive Winos, we had just done a tour right before the Stones got back together for the Voodoo Lounge thing. I was going to possibly play with the Stones and I was going to be on that tour. But I was too fucked-up. If Keith tells you you’re a little too out-of-control, you’re in bad shape.

I realize I'm officially 10 years behind the curve (I like it that way, lets the music age like fine wine), but I just bought a Crystal Method CD from Amazon (Vegas) and it is pretty freakin sweet. I wouldn't listen to it all the time but it's just the right mix of edgy and smooth (not too industrial / shreek-tacular) to get into the groove.

I bought this one because it got excellent ratings across the board from Amazon users... anyone want to chime in as to whether or not it's their best CD? Would be willing to buy one more. My music purchases the last few years have gone more and more to the trip-hop trance-endental funkiness of Thievery Corp, K&D, etc. This is a little more techno that that stuff and not as varied, but still very well produced / put together.

More recommendations from these guys?

More recommendations from these guys?Tweekend is great as well, but they started to fall apart for me on Legion of Boom. I mean, it's still very good, just not the CM I was used to. Kind of like when The Chemical Brothers released Surrender. After the fucking masterpieces that Dig Your Own Hole and Exit Planet Dust (and to some extent Brothers Gonna Work It Out, though that was more of a rehash of the previous two, genius as it was) were, Surrender just felt a bit flat. I gave up after Come With Us. Still some great stuff, but not mindblowing like the first two. I still listen to The Dust Brother's Fight Club Soundtrack though. Best night driving music ever.

If you like Vegas I'd seriously consider giving the first 2 or 3 Chemical Brothers CDs a listen. Dig Your Own Hole especially.

Thanks. I saw Tweekend got some decent reviews but the others looked suspect. That's why I was asking (to see if these guys were 1 CD wonders basically). [edit]

The only Dust Brothers / Chemical Brothers CD I have is the Fight Club soundtrack, which is excellent. I listened to some samples of Dig Your Own Hole on iTunes and it seems way more hyper / ADHD Dance Club stuff than the above-noted soundtrack which has some serious texture and complexity to it (like wine maaaan, far out!). Maybe Exit Planet Dust is closer to the same and less "clubby"?
