Kinda neat that they've plugged AppleNova (acckkk...excuse me) on a few occasions the past few days!
Seems to be a lot of new people here too. Was this planned, or something worked out or was it just fate and timing? The guys here know the guys there, or something? We seem to suddenly be their favorite place to send people.
Name notwithstanding, it was cool to see it linked AND for it to be different than the other place, thereby avoiding confusing the hell out of a bunch of people who clicked the link and couldn't figure out why AppleInsider didn't look or feel like...well, AppleInsider.
:|
That was THE top reason I was so adamant about a name change when this place first kicked in. WAY less confusion, our own identity/vibe, etc. And I'm liking "AppleNova" better than I did three days ago, so there's always hope...
;)
Although with Tiger's unveiling, words like "spotlight" and "dashboard" would've been cool to know or play with weeks ago, in the thick of the whole "re-name this site" scramble.
It makes one wonder why they would continuously plug AN, when they have their own forums. Do they just think that maintaining their own forums is tedious?
I for one welcome our new rumor mongering overlords!
Plus Nick could kick Kasper's pasty white ass any day.

I agree about that...and about the need there was, generally, for a new name...and about the good news re Think Secret.
Only thing is that this place may become a real techie haven - but that's probably as it should be.

Hi pscates. Lots of planning has been going on (and still is!). Excellent timing; NOT fate or coincidence. heh. ALL intentional. All well-thought-out. :) It has been fun to see it all coming together.

Fucking classic. And he still made it informative, yet interlaced with his own special brand of Humour™.
I love this place. :)

yeah, he did start rather late. i hope he's feeling ok.
Hey guys. :)
Just wanted to mention a few things from the TS side real quick.
First, I am aware of Think Secret's transition from the current TS forums to here. We have an active discussion about it going on over there in the feedback area.
Second, Think Secret and the Think Secret forums are actually separate entities. We use the Think Secret name with permission from Nick, but outside of the name and a link, the two are not connected. It's not quite the conflict of interest that it looks like right now.
Finally, I'm in the process of preparing the userbase for migration to this forum, should I decide to pull the plug on the forum once our affiliation with Think Secret has ended.
In the meanwhile, I can supply certain elements from board, such as the entire emoticon set, to help the transition along if you guys are interested in possibly switching over to them:

Good to hear a voice from the old "TS forum," Bones3D. I've actually been a member of your forum for ages, but rarely visit because of the very low traffic. On the other hand, AppleNova as an outgrowth of AppleInsider has very good traffic. I hate to split my time between places, so I would be in favor of merging the old TS board into AppleNova.
AppleNova is still very young. So any transplants from the old TS board would get in pretty much at ground level.

I'll be feeling a whole lot better if you'd stfu and get me my damn fix already. :smokey:
Seriously though, I've been to over a dozen of these keynotes, and every time, they pull out some long ass demo. What's worse is going to be at Apple Expo Paris, and again at Macworld San Francisco, when they demo the same Tiger features we just saw. It makes me want way more than a beer ;)
As for the ThinkSecret thing... I guess it's ok to talk about it a little more. Nick came to me back when he found the original thread in the .com Relief Clinic. (Nick and I have known each other for years.) We began talking then, and decided that if and when it did happen, we'd talk again. So it did, and we spoke some more, and agreed upon settling on a name change, something I didn't want to rush. That's why we spent many weeks letting what we (myself and the mods) felt to be the top three contenders sink in.
I think this is why AppleNova will grow on you guys. I hated it at first, but I hated them all at first. AppleNova sank in, and that's why we picked it. Anyhow, after the name change, Nick still wanted to go through with it, and so it happened. I believe a formal announcement of sorts is in the works.
Anyhow, if Nick's old board wants to shut down still, we're more than happy to welcome them over here. Again, I'd like to stress that it is their decision, not myself or Nick's.
We're also going to provide more articles on the front end once WWDC wraps up. Our very own SilentEchos is integrating vBulletin with our content management system, and once that is done, the infrastructure will be in place to read more wondrous pieces of prose by me, such as the WWDC Live Keynote coverage that was mostly horked from the macrumors IRC channel ;)
Thanks, Escher. :)
I noticed things are still a bit rough around the edges here on a few areas yet. With any luck, most of this will work itself out in the coming weeks. From a visual standpoint though, the place looks great and is surprisingly light on bandwidth.
In the meantime, I may be able to offer some insight on a few things. (Such as how to eliminating trolling through proxy blocking, etc...) Nothing too major, just things most people wouldn't usually think of this early in the game. ;)
Anyway, I'll probably be popping in, off and on, over the next couple weeks to get to know the community here better.

Well it now links you from the main thinksecret page not the think secret forums. SIGH
Wow...that was kind of all of a sudden. Hopefully whomever runs the TS boards gave the members a heads-up.
Viva La AldoNova!

Yeah, unfortunately our head's up wasn't much earlier than the user's got. I didn't even know Nick planned the switch to happen at the turn of the month. :-P

To say the least. I awoke one recent Saturday morning to a digital bloodbath, banishment, battle and kidnapping situation.
"WTF is THIS?!?! What happened to my site while I slept?"
:)
Yeah most of us didn't know about the switch until we started clicking on "board" at thinksecret.com and being re-directed here. "WTF!" was my initial thought, but then I realized that a "Holy $hi7" was more appropriate, but then decided to go back to a "WTF" cause i was still confused.. Anyways my second thoughts are that this place doesn't look half bad and I SUPPOSE I might just enjoy hanging out here when I have nothing better to do than roam forums.
Holy plug, Batman! (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/applenova.html)
It's on our front end too.

i wouldn't want to speculate on how that news is being received elsewhere, but excellent for us.
Yeah, cough, cough....
You really should get something for that cough

I really do have this amazing ability to miss almost an entire thread - normally like this, quite a good one. Welcome to all the new peeps from TS forums. :)
Are they actually still here? (I thought the majority of them returned to Bones3D's forum since he decided to keep it alive.)
Yeah, a few of us are. I've just been busy the last couple days to post.
i wouldn't want to speculate on how that news is being received elsewhere, but excellent for us.
alcimedes: At first read, I thought you were referring to AppleInsider. They've started a Gmail give-away (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=536) and membership drive to attract new members to the AI.com boards. I imagine Kasper isn't too happy that .org/AN walked straight into Nick's arms.
But judging from the follow-up, you were probably referring to Bones3D's "old TS" board. So much for misinterpretation. Why beat around the bush if you can verbalize the obvious for the retarded (me)? :)
Either way, I hope that all three communities -- AppleInsider.com, Bones 3D's "old TS" board, and AppleNova -- come out of this with new purpose and strength. Just like in the OS and browser wars, competition is good, even if your favorite player gets sidelined on occasion.
Escher
Yeah, a few of us are. I've just been busy the last couple days to post.
Bones3d: First of all, thank you for keeping your "old TS" board open. Your action immediately resolved the pointless avatar debate and has allowed everyone to return to substantive discussion. The various boards we frequent are certainly not mutually exclusive. As I pointed out in my post above, competition is good. Friendly competition is even better!
Second, I'm glad you are sticking around here. It's been fascinating to hear more about you personally in AppleOutsider, and to read your thoughts on both board- and Apple-related topics.
Cheers,
Escher
Well, you guys do have an interesting crowd over here. :)
