Yes, I think it will be a G5 or G4.

Actually, I think it will be a G5, but the poll doesn't have that option. :\

i like option #2 where the imac has neither the g5 or the g4

Sorry, can a mod change option 1 to a G5 and option 2 to a G4 and I will be pissed.

:D

Anyway...I do indeed think it will be a G5. It's their flagship product, it's getting a major redesign, it's the 20th anniversary year, the model has been neglected for much too long and it would make the ULTIMATE school/holiday gift for yourself or someone you love.

Can't imagine all this redesign and delay, just to plop in a 1.5GHz G4. People would riot.

G5, or I'll...well, I was going to make some crude variation on Junkyard Dawg's idiotic claim, but decided against it (because you never know...and I ain't that flexible).

this is a great example of why yes/no choices are not good for dialog boxes... I'm looking in your direction microsoft :D

I think the iMac will be powered by a G5 chip for the following reasons:

1) IBM makes the chips now and Apple's business relationship with Motorola looks like it's winding down, so why make a new product with G4 chips? Apple clearly makes it known that the G5 is the way of the future.

2) The PowerMacs now all have dual G5 processors and expansion slots galore- so they retain their flagship Mac status. The iMac can get in on the G5 fun too, but they only get one per computer.

3) I haven't kept up with the latest 3Ghz rumors, but I suspect that when the new iMac comes out, the PowerMac will have the 3Ghz. If it's not out yet, then I expect the new iMac lineup to be the same as the PowerMac line up, sans the extra processor and expansion slots- so you have the iMac 1,8, 2.0, and 2.5GHz G5 models.

I'm also inclined to agree this will be a G5 iMac. If you think about it, the timing is about the same as we experienced with the first generation G5's. I would not be at all surprised if the education markets get first pickings on them as well.

You mean "one code name". . .

For G6 is not a word, as of yet. . . :p

I think putting the G5 in the iMac would put it another step ahead of the eMac and iBook, where it should be.

I also think it's a logical evolution to put a slower clocked, lower-wattage G5 in the iMac.

But I don't think its going to happen soon.

For one, Apple reps have said (somewhat tangentially) that it will go in the iMac about the same time as the PowerBook.

Secondly, that follows along with what Apple has done for a long time. The iMac, being a consumer device, is always kept behind or on par with the PowerBook with regard to processors. I'm not saying that this is the rule, it is just the pattern.

G4 iMacs in September.

Um, show me where they've said this. That's a pretty big thing to claim without a handy link in your post. Otherwise...

I disagree with Spart. If they wanted to stay with G4s in the iMacs they could have put 1.5 Ghz G4s in them a long time ago, and without any sort of case or logic board redesign. It makes absolutely zero sense to delay iMacs just to put faster G4s in them. They're definitely going to be G5-based, now that IBM finally has the 970FX production up to speed.

The G4 iMac has been too close spec-wise to the eMac for too long now. I lusted after the design of the 20" iMac, it's truly stunning, but $2200/£1749 for a 1.25GHz G4 with 256MB of RAM? Not a chance.

Now put a 1.8GHz G5 in there with at least 512MB of RAM for the same price, and it actually looks a rational buy. Until Thursday though (or whenever it was removed from sale) it simply wasn't rational, especially with lines like the iBook and eMac being so competitively priced. If the new iMac isn't a G5 then it's just going to look silly next to the eMac.

Looking forward to the Jobs Keynote at the Paris Expo now though - especially as I'll be there. :)

Where the hell is the "G3" option?

Specs on Tiger really ask for a G5 in order to "feel right". I think they have to go G5 with a good video card (for Core image).

I hope it will be separate from the monitor...but the iMac ceases to really be an imac at that point (just another low-end desktop).

I think we'll see something that really enforces the "digital-hub" concept, being super friendly with the new home entertainment "pod stuff" and things like garageband and ichat/isight. Might be cool to see a removable tablet device that doubles as a monitor like some of the other things out there, but the price point would be tough for that. Still, what a great remote....

As Apple (mostly)always changes the design of the iMac range as well as the processor, I think they will include a G5 in the coming iMac.
They made a special design for the G3 with the five colors, for the G4 with the "Sunflower" look.
But I don't know what processor speed will be included and whether a single or a dual processor they will choose.
But as I live in France, I should see it physically in a month and a half or so. ;)

Agreed. They won't be putting another G4 into the iMacs. Also, remember that the Apple iMac page states an "all-new" model in the works. A G4 isn't all-new anymore ;).

Missing option: "G4, but why would I be pissed? I'm not expecting anything more."

That's what I would have put...if this was WWDC. Now, a redesign for the iMac without a processor upgrade would be the worst case scenario. Davey's right: a G4 isn't all-new anymore. This is a rare case where Apple has actually commented on the future of its computers, and we know it's coming in September due to a delay.

Why on earth would they delay the iMac (and miss the back-to-school season, too) if it was just a speed-bump and a cosmetic change?

My best case scenario: They upgrade to a G5, but don't change how it looks. I love the current iMac, and have wanted one since they introduced it. I might actually be able to afford one sometime, and I'm worried that, yeah, the G5 one would technically trump the iMac G4, but...but...what if it's ugly? That'd suck. :(

What Apple should have done was to speed-bump (still on the G4) earlier this year, maybe at the first possible sign of a delay. It's needed it forever, and remember, if Apple didn't screw up the planning the iMac would probably have been available for a lower price for a time after the iMac G5 came out. One final push (even as late as WWDC) would have really helped. Apple wouldn't have missed the back-to-school season, and (much more importantly) I'd still be able to buy (and afford!) an iMac G4 if I didn't like the redesign. ;)

It just doesn't make sense to me to redesign the iMac with a G4 in it ...then redesign it again shortly after with a G5. It's not like they would be able to just swap the new chips in when they feel like it!
