View Full Version : Mach 3 Blades/Shaving in general
Which Mach 3 Blades do you guys buy? I go to the store now and there's a bunch of the damn things, and they're all annoyingly expensive. I go through them pretty damn quick since I shave my face, arms, and legs with them for cycling. Do some people find different blades or even different razors entirely are working better on different parts of their body?
I think the Mach 3 does a great job on my arms, legs, and face, but I don't know what women are using. Furthermore, they have Mach 3 Power, Mach 3 Turbo, and Mach 3 blades. Is there a noticeable difference between these blades that makes it worth spending the extra money on any of them?

I have the second one, just the face. But I hate shaving more than anything else in this world, so I only do it every 3-4 days.
I use that Gillette Edge gel too, the soothing kind (aloe?). When I DO shave, my face is pretty sensitive. I'd seriously consider taking a once-a-day pill that would stop facial hair growth, if someone would invent it.
I wonder if all that other stuff is marketing (the built-in gel, the onboard lotion, the four-racks of blades, etc.).
I should just get one of those Moe Howard straight razors and be a man about it.

I used a two blade thing for a while...not sure the brand or anything like that, before I switched over to the Mach 3. It's an awesome shave. Granted, I don't grow much facial hair, it gets really close so I don't have to shave often at all.
And being a swimmer and a cyclist, I do occasionally shave arms, legs, chest, back...even though I'm not a very hairy guy. It's awesome for pretty much everything. The blades are expensive, but that I'm willing to deal with especially cause I don't go through them very fast. But even if you do go through them, you really can't beat the shave. It's not all hype, those things really do a great job.
Edit: Just go with the regular Mach 3 blades. The turbo and power and whatever else is out there really isn't worth it. It's all the same if you use shaving cream.
I used to have a 2 blade sensor excel( I think that's what it was) I liked it, but then I got a Mach 3 Turbo, and I like that even more.
I really want to try the Mach 3 power, just for gimmicks sake, I figure, if it's not what it claims to be, then I just bought myself another mach 3 turbo that looks cooler :p

i also only shave every 3 to 5 days...hate shaving...but my facial hair grows quite fast...so i am always growing a semi-beard, then shave, then back to semi-beard...confuses the people at work..."geld, are you growing a beard?"..."nope, just lazy"....i usually shave at work just to further confuse them...on "playful" days i will go from beard in the morning to goatee at lunch to clean shaven at the end of the day...once i shaved just half my face to see the reaction...i went 3 hours before anybody notice?? nothing like when i was young though...in college i worked part time at a bank...use to go to work with makeup on just one eye, or a twig shved through my pierced ear...i also use to love to use this one stamp at the bank...i would wear it on my cheek in light blue ink...it was a stamp we used to mark old money to be sent to the fed to be destroyed...it said, "mutilate"....
my wife would love me to shave everyday though...i get quite prickly by day one
at home i use a mach 3 and gillette edge gel...just like paul....
at work i use any disposable razor i can get my hands on and the nasty soap from the sink dispenser...nasty and rough and probably cancer causing for all i know...better than the time i used betadine and the awful cheap single blade razors they use to shave the genital area of patients before surgery...that was beyond painful
gotta start shaving more at home i guess...
paul, i would take a pill too...i constantly have that miami vice or george michael growth...too 80's for my own good

Maybe someone's working on that pill, g. ;)
Like I said, they've got one for every other damn physical/mental/emotional condition. Try making one that actually matters to most people, for once.
:D
Of course, like the others, there would probably be a horrible list of side effects.
"Users of Razectal NS may experience side effects, including, but not limited to, rash, blurry vision, vomiting and diarrhea. Other symptoms, though rare, may include heartburn, stomach ulcers, glaucoma, uncontrolled flatulence accompanied by oily discharge, athlete's foot, loose stools, cramps, bloating, loss of vision, inability to sing on key, warts, the clap, brewer's droop, itchy watery eyes, speaking in tongues, rectal bleeding, sweaty palms, distended scrotum, fever blisters, constipation, headache, nausea, voting for the wrong party, inverted eyelids, a sudden sexual desire for Gabe Kaplan and anal blisters."
I really want to try the Mach 3 power, just for gimmicks sake, I figure, if it's not what it claims to be, then I just bought myself another mach 3 turbo that looks cooler :p
Actually, you can use the same Mach 3 body with all the blades. I've had a regular mach 3 for years, but on the damn subway the other day it was infested with these Mach 3 Power ads. So I went and bought those blades, but checked first to make sure they'd work with my old body. and they do :)
I actually looked into laser hair removal once, thinking that maybe it would be a long term hair removal process. But apparently if you're going to go the laser removal route you're guaranteeing yourself a future with no hair ever again. They usually follow it up with electrolysis for permanence. I just wanted something that I could get done like every six months :\
I shave my legs and arms in the shower, and damn, it takes a long time. I looked into waxing, but that's expensive, and you have to let the hair grow back out longer than I prefer before you get it done again.
I've been shaving my arms and legs for about ten years now. I shudder when i think about how much money I've spent on blades during that time span. And I swear if one of you does the math and posts the number you're banned ;)
I know I'll get shot down for this, but have you checked out some of the women's leg shaving bodies? The angle is totally different. I was curious about my wife's razor, thinking it was just a scam (oh look, it's *pink*), but it really is angled for easier application to the legs. Pretty slick, no pun intended. And, the men's blades will fit the women marketed bodies as well, just match brands. That way you can keep one body for face to ensure sharpness for a close shave, and another for more dense limb hair with a better-angled handle.
Just a thought.
I always shave with a two-razor women's razor (usually a Gilette sensor/excel), on my face, my legs (when I get around it it), and my arms (usually only before going out). I don't use shaving soap either... I just shave under the water in the shower. It works surprisingly well — I find it irritates my face much less than shaving with shaving soap/gel/whatever.
Women's razors are good because the angle of the blade seems to separate me from fewer parts of my face, and the blades are usually more widely spaced, so they don't clog as much when I get around to shaving every few days.
Waxing is excellent. I would thoroughly recommend it (provided you have a reasonable pain threshold — it's really not that bad). If you worried about regrowth then perhaps you should think about an Epilady (my partner uses one, and swears by it, provided that you use it regularly).

actually the whole gimmick about thr 'power' is not really in the blades they have batteries in the razor body that are supposed to make your hair stand up so it shaves better. i think its a gimmick but hell it might work ;)
oh heres gilletes mach3 power website http://www.gillettem3power.com/home_f.asp
I shave every other day. . .
I use Mach 3 when I can afford the refills.. . .but I am fine with some cheap Bic blades.
I don't use shaving cream. . . it just bothers me.
I shave while in the shower.

I just tried growing a beard, so I stopped shaving for 2 weeks. It itched like hell, so today I whipped out my trusty Mach 3, and it was all gone. Smooth as a baby's bottom. The Mach 3 is a truly excellent shave :)
I shave every 2-3 days and I use the Mach 3.
I wish that I never had to shave again, but the wife gets all freaky about beards.
I thought about laser removal but decided against it for smoething along the same lines as getting "snipped", you never know when you might want full use of it.
Mach 3 Turbo is better then the Gillette (?) Cuattro. 4 blades are not better. They have wires spaced every cm or so, and it stops you from getting a perfect shave. Also hair gets stuck in between the blades and I can't get it out. It was free, but I'm going to keep using the Mach 3.
As for shaving in general...every 3 days or so. I tend not to use shaving cream as long as I am in the shower.
Mach 3 something or other. I don't really know or care, but it gets the job done.
But I do care about my shaving cream. If I use any shaving cream that has alcohol in it my skin gets all blotchy so I've started using
http://a1468.g.akamai.net/f/1468/580/1d/pics.drugstore.com/prodimg/46889/300.jpg
It's great. No need for aftershave.
That is the greatest shaving cream in the world, man.
I almost bought a Mach 3 the other day, and was looking at their new battery powered mother... but I can't make myself drop that kind of money. I use Gilette disposables with a tilting head, and I'm happy with them.
I shave every 2-3 days or so. That often is fine, but as soon as I go to every day my face revolts against me, and it's totally irritated.
I'd seriously consider taking a once-a-day pill that would stop facial hair growth, if someone would invent it.
I'd consider anything to avoid shaving, even surgery. It makes me cringe to think how many months of my life (in aggregate) I have wasted shaving. I don't think you can get laser hair removal on your face. But if you could, I would definitely do that.
1. Facial Hair:
I have used Gillette Sensor blades since they came out, after starting out with a Braun electric shaver as a teen. I upgraded my handle to a Sensor Excel because of the nice gray rubber grip. I've switched back and forth between plain Sensor and Sensor Excel for the past decade or so.
I'm shocked by how many people here use the outrageously expensive Mach 3 razors. I did try the Mach 3 blades for about 3 months when they came out. But I didn't like the Mach 3's soft spring and side-hinge (as opposed to the hinge in the back center of the blade) at all. The Mach 3 didn't give me enough control around my mouth, chin and temples. And I didn't like the high price of Mach 3 blades. So I went back to and am very happy with Sensor Excel.
I have dark brown hair and shave every day, except for some weekends when I'm too lazy. I don't like the prickle when I don't shave for more than 48 hours.
Edit: I swear by Nivea shaving gel, the one for sensitive skin. But I'll look into the Aveeno stuff mentioned above.
2. Body Hair:
As for the rest of my body, there's nothing like a professional wax job, if you can afford it. I wax my shoulders, neck and back when I have the cash, and shave when I don't. I have yet to get to my arms and legs.
Do any of you swimmers and bikers use epilatory creams? I understand they last twice as long as shaving.
Do any of you guys use Epilady or Silk-Epil or similar electric devices that pull out your hair? To me, pulling out your hair makes more sense than just cutting it off.
Escher
I don't know about the rest of the guys, but I want a pic of you shaving your temples.

Aveeno is the goodness! But I use Aveeno Positively Smooth Shave Gel.
http://a1468.g.akamai.net/f/1468/580/1d/pics.drugstore.com/prodimg/84139/200.jpg
It's got oatmeal in it!
I have a heavy beard - must shave everyday. It's easiest for me to shave in the shower with my beloved Aveeno and a Sensor Excel. My whiskers are too heavy for the Mach 3 (my beard just clogs up the blades immediately) and those 4-bladers are just a gimmick and useless.
Do any of you swimmers and bikers use epilatory creams? I understand they last twice as long as shaving.
I have done, but they're messy, don't necessarily get everything, and don't last noticeably longer than any other method. They can also react pretty badly with sensitive skin types if you're not careful (here's a hint: DO NOT apply them if there is any sweat on you, or it's a hot day: it causes an extremely nasty chemical reaction in some cases).

LoCash you cycle?! Like, your drug-addled body can take it?! Staph and Escher why do you shave all those other body parts? Do you swim/cycle too like LoCash and DMBand? Its funny to read so many ppl "admitting" to shaving all-over 'cos in the UK, men shaving their arms/legs/chest is a definite piss-take subject (as in "you so, love yourself" if you do... actually "poof" would probably be the most likely response, but I don't talk like that).
As for me and my shaving habits, I have a weird (though cheap) solution: I shave with a hair razor. Yes, really. I have a very expensive Philishave electric rotary shaver, but I have very sensitive skin and my beard doesn't grow quickly enough yet (ahh). This means that if I try to do a close shave, not only do I get a red/irritated skin, for the next 2-3 days, I get whiteheads above my upper lip as hair follicles get trapped in the pores 'cos they don't grow quickly or strongly enough to penetrate the skin. At least, that is my theory. Yeah, so I use my cordless hair razor (which I use to shave my head, when I can be arsed). It leaves me with a light stubble, but I kinda like it.
I have done, but they're messy, don't necessarily get everything, and don't last noticeably longer than any other method.
Thanks, staph. Maybe I'll give epilatory creams a try, just so that I can talk from personal experience. I'll make sure not to be sweaty. :)

SonOfSylvanus : I only remove hair on my back and shoulders, in addition to my face. I have yet to try arms, legs, or chest. I don't bike or swim fast enough for hair to make any difference. But having a smooth back and shoulders feels liberating. Most women also dislike hairy backs, while their opinions on hair in other parts vary. In addition, if you are in good physical shape, removing body hair makes any muscles look more defined. (Have you ever seen hairy six-pack abs?) Finally, I do so love myself. :)
As for the cultural differences between the UK and US, I would maintain that many stereotypical elements of gay culture (including paying more attention to dress, using beauty products, and removing hair on your body) have crossed over into the mainstream. Some people like to use the term "metrosexual" to describe men that look and behave like homosexuals, but are perfectly straight (i.e. like pussy). I dislike the term metrosexual itself, but think it accurately captures a new trend in society.
As for me and my shaving habits, I have a weird (though cheap) solution: I shave with a hair razor.
If you don't work in a place where a clean shaven face is a must, that's a great solution. Seems to me that is what George Michael has been doing ever since his days in Wham. Looks great if you don't work in a white shirt and gray suit environment. :)
I've kept the hair on my head relatively long for at least ten years. Girls love the curls. But recently, I decided to go back to the very short hair of my high school days. I contemplated getting a "sheep shear," but then decided this afternoon to let my barber have a go. My newly short hair feels great and clean, but a bit naked. :) It will come in handy during DC's hot and humid summer, which is already on its way.

About a month back, after our university convocation, all graduates were given a free gift package (coupons, samples etc)...inside was a Schick Quattro razor. So, I gave it a shot, and sort of got into the habit of using it... seemed to shave pretty close and smoothly. but, after reading this thread, I decided to go back and give my old Mach3 Turbo another shot, with a brand new blade. Wow... how could I have turned my back on this?? The Mach3 is so much lighter than the Quattro, and has so much more control and flex to it. Much fewer strokes to get the job done, and much less hair jamming in between blades etc. That Quattro is a goner, long live Mach3 Turbo.

I used to use the Mach 3 blades, but found them way to expensive and not worth the difference. I went back to my Sensor Excel and am very happy.
I also use the Aveeno shaving cream and I finish up with witch hazel as an aftershave. It all keeps my face tolerably happy.

Hey Brad what model of NEC MultiSync do you have back there, just out of curiosity. I have a FE-950+ which I got for something like $200 Canadian a few years ago. Triple-price-matching is good :p

...but it was well worth it. It's still the best damn monitor I've used. I'd like to replace it with an LCD, but I haven't found any within a doable price range that can compare to the color quality and contrast.
New blades are for sissies. I'm still using whatever original blade that came with the free Mach 3 I was sent in the mail (how I got on a list for a free razor I don't know). I'm gonna use that baby til it's dull as a spoon!!

Waiting 3-4 days to shave ruins the blade and is a lot more painful to me than going through the daily torture. I tried 3-4, I went down to every other day (I have light, soft faical hair and it doesn't grow fast) and have made it an everyday habit. I barely feel it except for a few spots (a cowlick, under my nose, my chin). My blades last longer too.
I'm using a Mach 3, but it doesn't do a good job around a cowlick I have in my beard. I can nick myself easily there. I keep meaning to try something else like a Schick, but paying $10 or more for a handful of blades is hard enough to justify.
I'm pretty hairy, but I refuse to shave my chest clean. I do trim with scissors for my chest, and I do have an electric around mostly for trimming the fuzz on my neck, but I avoid using it otherwise since it turns hair into tiny razors and makes me itch like crazy. My body hair is soft but the hair is kinda long so it does need some grooming.
I tried Nivea and hated their stuff. I ue a fair amount of Neutrogena stuff.
Glad I could contribute. ;)
haha I'll make sure and post pictures if it happens Brad

Im south asian so I have a 5 o clock shadow 5 minutes after I shave. I shave once a week (too lazy) and pretty much have a thick beard by the end of it. I even bouth an electric razor because I thought it would be quicker but it really wasnt. A 100 bucks wasted. Anyway Ive found that using blades is just so much easier and takes so little time as well. I use the Mach 3 power and I think its the best one yet. The holder vibrates (no sexual innuendos please) but it makes the hair on ur skin stand up and thus a smoother shave. All Mach 3 blades are made the same- no matter what the color or the packaging is so you can use any of them on Mach 3 power.
i know my reply is kinda a few months late...but im bored... a fire alarm just went off in my fraternity and couldnt go back to sleep.
I never got around to getting a mach 3 power, one day.
I eventually got around to trying the Mach 3 (non-powered version), and I must say that they really are a big improvement over two-bladed men's razors. My Gilette Sensor Pro II has been relegated to my legs…

Whatever your favorite products are, I can assure you that if you use them in the shower with a fogless mirror you will get better results. Many of you may already do this, but I thought I'd mention it. ;)

Now that's a great idea. Why didn't I think of that? Do they have fogless mirrors at Wal-Mart?
I don't usually bother with a mirror — I just check I've got everything by touch. I've pretty much worked out which areas I'm likely to miss. ;)
I recently made the switch from Gilette Sensor disposables to the Mach 3. The mach 3 is great, except I'm still not used to shaving my moustache/lip brow, I think its because I'm still used to the non-pivot head of the Sensors. Otherwise I'm pleased, my skin doesn't get as irritated having to go over certain areas.
Just switched from the Schick Quattro to the Turbo 3. At first, I didn't like it, the angle was slightly different. But as I became adjusted to it, I like it best now. shave as little as possible, it depends on what my week looks like. 2-3 days or more

Yeah, I switched too - I really like the Mach 3, but it is a little tricky in certain spots.
And I've always shaved in the shower. It's so much easier and faster.
I don't bother with the fogless mirror though. I've got a little hand mirror that I just warm up under the shower for a few seconds and steam won't affect it.
Ran out of my usual Aveeno Oatmeal shaving creme. Got some crappy Colgate junk and it's just not the same.

Me, I found the best results are to use shaving oil around the mouth, and do it in the shower.
For *SHAVING* you frickin' perverts. Jeez.
Shaving oil cuts down on the razor burn I get around the edges of my lips even when using a fresh blade, and the shower keeps everything softened for the razor. Then, after showering, lotion. Keeps the skin supple and on days I don't shave, it softens the whiskers so I don't get ingrowns - another problem around the lip edges. (Yeah, it looks great to have a red sore on the edge of your lip... like a blasted cold sore.) I used to get them exactly three days after shaving, but now I almost never do with the oil and lotion.

I have a mohawk, and its hard as well to maintain (much more so than regular hair) as every several days, I have to take clippers to shave down the sides, and then use a razor to ge tthe peach fuzz off. I've gone through a variety of razors, Mach 3, Schick Quattro, disposables, and right now, the Mach 3 is probably the best (and cuts me the least) However, the problem is that I can't afford them, so I end up using bics, and cutting my head all up. I'm not a fan of shaving my face, because the minute I do, I get red bumps all over my neck which last for days. Recently, I've discovered that by using a razor just to shape, and then clippers just to get everything down to stubble works very well (I leave it usually, but at that point its very easy just to shave it off as well).
I've always wanted to try working with a straight razor though...
Alci, I can't recommend the following strongly enough:
1) Steam it all to heck. Shave in the shower if you can. This requires getting a fog-free mirror, but it's worth it. If the shower/mirror isn't an option. do the old-style: get a towel soaking in water so hot you almost can't stand it, then slap that thing on your face and let it steam your whiskers for a few minutes. Shave immediately.
2) Use shaving oil. This will cut down on the ingrowns and irritation tremendously. You can get the expensive oils made just for this, or I've heard some people use canola oil with good success.
3) Get a good shaving cream. Old-style lather is actually really frickin' good, and cheap as hell. (The brushes are pricey, but it's a one-time expense.)
4) Go with the grain (but you knew this).
5) Use lotion every day, even days you don't shave.
I used to have horrendous problems with shaving, but now I don't. The oil and lotion was the trick.
You know, it's amazing how much general self-care we guys lose out on because societally we have this "ook, macho, can't talk to other guys about stuff" mentality. :P
Yes, I had to learn the above from Queer Eye... :P
I hate that shaving commercials almost always show Joe Stud with the smooth face shaving against the grain.
Christ, I tried that once and fucked my face up for a good week. I cringe when I see those goddamned commercials.
I got use to shaving against the grain, and I use the Mach 3 with the white Gillette cream. Today was the first day I ever cut myself shaving, and I have very sensitive skin. Using balms is important and not letting your skin dry out. I always like to make sure my skin is nice and softened with hot water before I start shaving, it makes things go a lot smoother.

I always like to make sure my skin is nice and softened with hot water before I start shaving, it makes things go a lot smoother.
Me too. I try to shave in the shower, if possible.
Mach 3 blades are getting way to expensive. I try to get bulk razors from eBay. Saves some $ in the long run.

Exactly what the heck? I've heard about coincidences, but this is getting absurd
Coincidences? What coincidences?
Sorry, my brain must not be functioning today. I never get enough sleep. That must be the problem. :(

Carol, the thread is about shaving. If you're not going to add to the discussion... well...
:p :p :p
I think the best plan for me in general is to stay out of these types of discussions, as an 'active participant,' that is. ;) :p :D
I will say that I do prefer a guy with a clean-shaven face. It's nice to see the 'real' facial features and actual bone structure. It seems more honest, somehow.
I really, REALLY don't like mustaches like Geraldo Rivera's. Yuck.
All these cultures where every guy feels obliged to wear a thick mustache...somehow that seems so primitive to me, like a mustache is required in order to prove what a macho stud each guy is, to prove that he has reached puberty (duh) and has enough testosterone to produce facial hair. Gosh, I'm SO impressed at such accomplishments.

What she means is facial hair's a real turn off when I guy's going down on ya.
At least, I think that's what she means.
Of course, I could be wrong.
I mean, not about it being a turn off but about what she means. Know what I mean?
Good. I'm glad we understand each other. ;) :p <- Safety smilies.
Thigh burn. I've heard it's a deal killer.
I've recently started using Gillette's Sensor 3 razors instead of Sensor Excel. It's a nice cross between the Sensor Excel and Mach 3 lines. I prefer the smaller footprint and the extra blade is very effective. They're fairly hard to find though.
Anyone else like them?

Carol:
You want some personal information, check this out...
I have two Mach 3's, one for my face and one in the shower for my balls. Pre-shower you go after the area with the beard trimmer to make sure everything is nice and cropped. Leave the patch short (long enough to not be scratchy) and then, after the skin is prepared with hot water and lather, shave the areas most likely to create stench. Don't be a wuss, just lather it up, pull the skin taught then whammy!
If I could afford Brazilian waxes I'd be all over it.
I started this about 6 months ago and I'll never go back, I feel 10x cleaner at all times.

Omg. Hi Groverat. Well, to be clear, I didn't actually ASK for personal information. But when people are offering it, I'm certainly curious enough to read what they have to say.
I think it's interesting that that particular aspect of grooming seems to make such a difference to you. :)
OMFG yes... I'm with 'rat on this one.
And 'rat... unless you're willing to pay for the waxing in perpetuity, don't get started. You'll be ruined for life on shaving if you stop. It just ain't the same.

I totally agree, it needs to be done especially if someone is really hairy. Cause if not, things can only get gross.
I'd be curious if someone could formulate a poll about this topic.

Hey, Kickaha, is there any chance you could put together a comprehensive poll on this topic (since you chimed in in such a timely fashion)? No? Yes? Maybe?
And if so, could you run it past me before posting, in case I can think of more questions? ;)
Or put it in the mod forum first, so we can ALL add questions? I imagine our eloquent and perceptive admins (:D), alcimedes, murbot, LoCash and Brad, could help refine the poll. (Especially LoCash, who shaves just about everything! heh) :)

Of course it has to be done - anyone who cares about personal grooming, well, you groom your whole person! (at least I do).
But what I don't get is having two seperate razors. I mean I kinda get it, but when I bathe, I'm as clean as I'm going to get all over.
And if a razor is good enough for my face, it's sure as hell good enough for my balls.

Okay, I do have personal and undoubtedly impertinent questions. :D
1.) Do you guys shave your balls mainly :
a) because YOU prefer to
b) because your partner prefers it
c) a and b equally
2.) Does anyone completely shave their entire nether region, including ALL pubic hair?
If so, do you do this:
a) because YOU prefer to
b) because your partner prefers it
c) a and b equally
3.) Do competitive swimmers and bicycle racers shave their pubic hair too, or just arms, legs, chest? LoCash? DMBand?
No one has to answer any of this, of course. But it's fun to ask anyway. :D

Well, speaking as a hairy guy, I mostly just trim my body hair using an electric and small scissors, but a few places get shaved. You can hopefully guess which ones. It's just a lot more comfortable day in and day out. If you know what chafed skin feels like down there, imagine hair getting pulled and twisted. Plus I figure that I like a woman to shave her legs and trim her pubic hair, so I should be so considerate in return. I just always figured that you care for your skin, you care for your hair on your head, it's just logical to control and groom your body hair as a matter of good hygienic practice.
FWIW, I think it's somewhere between kinky and perverse to go naked mole rat, regardless of whether you're male or female. That is, unless you're very serious about one of the aforementioned sports.
*Naked mole rat*?!?

As having done all of this before, I'll go for it.
1) c. - Both my girlfriend and I agree that business goes the smoothest if things are trimmed downstairs.
2) a. - I tried it once to see how it was, and I couldn't stand having all of it shaved, especially if you neglected it for more than 2 days, it would start to itch all over.
Thus now I've settled on a combination of 1 & 2, all of the balls (or scrotum if you will) is shaved, but the rest of the area is trimmed.
I did competitive swimming for multiple years (7ish) and only for the last 4 did I shave at all. Usually swimmers like to shave their head, legs, arms, and chest. Pubic region is unnecessary because it is covered by your jammers (if you wear long jammers) or mostly covered by your speed-o if you wear speed-o's. We also like to lube under your arms and between the legs, but that is illegal for competition. :\

It's not just the balls, Carol dear, for me it's the entire public region save the patch above the wang which is kept short-but-not-scratchy. So that's under the balls, back from there (as far as I'm comfortable reaching with a razor) and the thigh area around the balls and small scissors for the little hairs around the tree.
I don't like completely bare crotch, either on myself or my partner (my ideal is the landing strip for the lady). She used to shave completely because she thought I'd like it, I just assumed she did it for herself then she stopped and I didn't really care (still keeps very trimmed up). I read a long discussion about it, decided to try it and loved it. She says she likes it, of course I never heard any complaints before so I think she's more interested in the shaft than the surrounding foliage.
Just because you're a man doesn't mean you have to be gross.
This is one of my favorite topics.
3.) Do competitive swimmers and bicycle racers shave their pubic hair too, or just arms, legs, chest? LoCash? DMBand?
I don't know any cyclists that do. All the competitive cyclists I know are peeved enough shaving their arms and legs. Some do their chest too, I don't. So I don't know anybody that would want to continue down to their pubic region. *shrugs*

Fist I love my Gillette Mach 3 turbo with the vibration :) I shave my head totally bald. Around 38 or so I was loosing just enough hair topside to say fuck it, so off it went. I never ever nick my head with the Mach 3.
As a former bicycle racer I used to shave my legs. I remember the first time I asked my coach and teammates about why they shaved their legs. We were driving out to Trexler Town PA. We were in a van in the middle of nowhere I was about 12 or 13 at the time. The coach driving said mater a fact, "Joe, didn't ya know WE ARE ALL GAY":D sounds funny now but imagine you are 12 and in a van full of older guys in the middle of nowhere :D. Later on in life I got my vengeance. I was heading home on the subway in NYC after a long Park Race. I was tired and dirty. I had my bike over my shoulder and getting on the subway. When this goomba and his guidete are looking me. Goomba is telling his bride how he knows why we shave our legs, it's to make us more aerodynamic, right , right right hem right, tell her I'm right. In my sweetest lisping gay voice I look at them and say : Well actually daaaarlings I'm in a cabaret act at night and it make the pantyhose feel better. :D In truth is has nothing to do with aerodynamics. It has more do to when you crash. When you get road rash from a fall all the skin curls up and the hair rolls into the skin and causes infection. Also cyclist have sojorns that give the legs massages before and after a race with liniments and cooling rubs it is much easier to work a leg with no hair. Some also say it keeps the legs cool. Then there is tradition, if you are SERIOUS ROADY you shave your legs because you have these massive pythons of vascular legs that no normal person ever possesses and they look cool. As for my balls no way I got enough down there I don't need to make it LOOK larger :D and Besides nothing sharp like a razor is ever going close to my jewels.

I always love these threads with all this personal information... all this "boy talk." heh. :)
Don't know why it's so intriguing, but it is. :DWhen reading this, I somehow have this mental picture of Carol peeping into the men's locker room. :D
Back to the topic: It seems like I'm a minority here: I use an electrical razor to cut my facial hair (my wife doesn't like beards). For the rest of my body hair, as she didn't comment, I see no reason to shave these areas. I'm no swimmer, no biker, not gay ;) and do have (dark) blonde hair anyway. I do have Vitiligo, so the hairs do help a little bit to hide the white spots on my skin...

1. A. For me, this is really a personal preference. It feels nicer, it's easier to deal with, it keeps things smelling more fresh and feeling more fresh (in other words, you don't sweat as much, and believe it or not, ball sweat is a constant worry for most men, haha.)
2. I started to shave it all because I wanted to, for the same reason as the ball shaving thing. But turns out that she likes it too, so I guess it started as A and turned into C. I do it for me, but she likes the look so I don't get any complaints from her. It's just more comfortable, and something about it looks better when it's not covered in a ton of hair.
3. I know a lot of competitive swimmers who shave it all for one reason or another, and a lot who don't. It's really up to the swimmer. Granted, it makes you no faster physically, it can make you feel faster, which is essentially the entire idea behind shaving your body in the first place. It's more mental than anything. I do it because it's a comfort thing, I'm more comfortable in the water that way, so that's why I do it.

No, GSpotter, I'm certainly *not* a peeper. And you deserve a few lashes for even suggesting it. :p Now, if I had *started* this thread, it might be a different story... but I didn't.
A huge percentage of the guys I have known in my life have been reluctant to communicate personal information, especially with regard to feelings/emotions. I've had to drag stuff out of them so that I could understand them better and help rather than hinder their dealing with various concerns.
Dragging stuff out of people gets really tiring after a while. I get sick of having to do it, so I don't do it anymore. If they can't bring themselves to communicate, then fine... they're not the guy for me. It's a shame really. Some guys have no idea how nice it can be to share their insecurities with someone who really cares about them.
Anyway, I so enjoy the boards because the guys who post here are basically communicators. I LOVE so very much reading about their thoughts and hopes and dreams...without the exhaustion of having to drag it out of them first. Does that make sense to you?
Hygiene threads like this one are simply a small, but interesting, part of the communication landscape. I've had some great conversations with my male friends (at work and otherwise) about life, love, and sex; but never really about all this grooming stuff.
I'm not embarrassed to be here, GSpotter. Not after participating in some of the appalling (and funny) bathroom threads over at AI a year ago. Hardly anything could embarrass me after that. :)

I'm not embarrassed to be here, GSpotter. Seems like I'd chosen the wrong word (GSpotter makes mental note to check the dictionary before posting potentially ambiguous comments...). I didn't think of you as a peeper, more like someone standing in the doorframe, calling "Hey, guys".
