View Full Version : Nerf blows
So today my younger brother comes in and says "hey! let's goto the toy store and get some nerf guns"
I said "that sounds like it could be totally fun, we haven't had any nerf guns in a while"
So, we go to toys r us, walk around the maze like store(it truly is designed to get you trapped amongst walls of toys) Finally come to a pithy selection of nerf(and imitation nerf) guns. After much deliberation, we pick 3 guns that seem to offer a good range of options for our high noon showdown.
But what a damn disappointment! What happened to these things? I remember the old school ones with big ass air chambers, pump it up like 5-7 times and it'd launch a dart 40 feet easily, with relatively good accuracy. of the 3 guns we got, the best they'd shoot was maybe 10 feet, and even then there'd be a 1-2' drift.
So I'm thinking about it and it's lame because there really aren't that many options for pretend warfare these days.
There are:
Guns - Lethal, expensive
Paintball guns - Like guns, only not lethal
Airsoft guns - Like Paintball, only less painful, still capable of putting an eye out
Nerf - Weak ass pussy shit.
What there needs to be is a high velocity, decent accuracy nerf gun that can shoot upto 40 feet comfortably.
So, I did some searches, and I found a pretty big mod community for nerf guns. People out there doing full on mods that can get upto 140 feet distance with deadly(hey! it's nerf) accuracy.
sigh... to be a kid again.
Well don't bogart the links, make with the mods! :)
My bad... http://nerfhaven.com/

I've been thinking the same thing about Super Soakers. They stopped carrying the bad-ass powerful models a couple years ago... all they have is these crappy pieces of crap that are very poorly made. :(

yea, things when i was a kid were so much better. shit, my tonka trucks were made entirely of STEEL
I remember having supersoakers and the kid around the block getting the one with the dual tank backpack and feeling like i could never compete again. My favorite though was the big ass bazooka type one that had a giant tank on the gun itself.
Ah yeah, the actual steel Tonka dumptrucks.
Did you know it takes *nine* M-80s to blow the bed off of one of those??

If nerf guns and supersoakers aren't what they used to be, I imagine you have lawsuits to blame.
Right?
A shame, huh? :\

Lawn darts ain't what they used to be...
Oh, and nine M-80's? That must've been a lot of fun!
(or did M-80's get weaker, too?)

Most likely, also, I think it's a result of cutting manufacturing costs. Cheaper parts/construction yields a cheaper product all around, but it's also one that can't build up as much pressure. They also don't do the air pumping type anymore, which is also probably related to lawsuits and/or cheapening the product.
Most of the mods that people do are essentially giving the gun a copper barrel and then sealing it up really good(the whole chassis) so that more pressure builds up. It's usually nothing all that fancy.
While I've never been that big into modding things, I think I'm going to get some of these old school nerf guns(find 'em on ebay and stuff) and see what I can't do with it.

Nope, still the std 1/4 stick of dynamite. :) We used to get them for free as kids from the government.
See, orchardists were shooting the deer that would wander in from the foothills, and the game folks weren't too happy about it. So, they started offering 'deer frighteners' that were M-80s in shotgun shells. You'd shoot at the deer, the primer would launch the M-80 (you really really hoped) and light a short fuse, and then it would go off somewhere near the deer. In theory. An orchardist or foreman could call up the Game Dept and have them deliver a box of them basically whenever. I was friends with a neighbor kid whose dad was foreman of the main orchard, and he never noticed how many we swiped. Take a sharp knife and carefully peel open the shell, and you could remove the M-80. Add a longer fuse, and voila, instant lost appendages. :D

Yup, I used to ride mine down the hill in my backyard all the time. That was cool. :)

Do they even sell Jarts anymore? When I was a kid we played on rusty old bike with no protection. Nowadays I think the parents get arrested if their kid is found on a bike without any padding. :D

The worst is what they did to transformers. They used to be all metal and tough as nails. Now they're this flimsy plastic shit that falls apart after one rooftop parachute mission fails.

Would it surprise anyone to hear that's almost exactly what my high school counselor wrote in my senior yearbook? :D

I miss sniping my friends with soapy water...

Truer words have never been spoken. I could knock my friends out cold with Optimus Prime.
I still have a scar on my forehead from an unfortunate giant TinkerToy accident.

As do I -- a psychotic brother incident...
Paintballs are worth it!
Plus you can get (Talons  ) guns at walmart for like $20. I think that was a special now, maybe they are normally $40.

Damn right - I was at my mothers the other day and one of my old Transformers was out for the grandkids. It must be at least 18 years old, but it looks brand new. It's massive too. My nephew can wrestle with it.

True, I used to have to bash them with a hammer a couple times to get the 'wrecked' look. Now you can just jump on it.
...that and I'm 2x as big ;)

I've still got a dump truck, and a crane, complete with sharp rusty edges. What are the chances that the ones they sell today would still be around after being abused for 20 years or so?

Get a paintball gun (Sypder is a good but inexpensive brand). Buy some Scorch paintballs (from GameFace Paintball (http://www.gamefacepaintball.com/)) which can be found at Wal-Mart for about 10 bucks for 500 of them (which is a great deal.) Than go shoot and have fun.
It's the next best thing to super soakers. I used to have one that I had to pump about 40 times to get enough pressure (I had one of those cool pressure gauges) and than it would take all of 5 seconds to drain it because it shot so much water. I loved that thing. I actually looked for one the other day when I was out, but SuperSoakers suck now :(.
I should post an addendum to my little run-down list of the various fake warfare(I'd edit my top post but I can't)
Guns - Lethal, expensive
Paintball guns - Like guns, only not lethal, also, messy, require masks.
Airsoft guns - Like Paintball, only less painful and less expensive, equally messy(those little airsoft pellets get everywhere after a good fight), still capable of putting an eye out
Nerf - Weak ass pussy shit, but super cheap, relatively no pain, no risk of having an eye put out(even those high velocity guns would probably only give you a black eye tops, and it'd have to be fairly close range)
I've done paintballing before and airsofting a little. So far, it seems to be that the most fun can be had with modified nerf guns because once the guns are modified, there is basically no prep and less snags that might get in the way, just go down to the park or a school whenever you want and have at it. The only problem is that you have to modify them for them to be effective. So that sucks, but, fortunately there is a big enough mod community to help with that stuff.
