I'm gonna say Sunday, July 11 at 7:22EST.

I was hoping it would be tonight so I could give it my best shot AND BE DONE WITH IT.

:D

I'll be running to my PowerBook all during the race tomorrow, I suppose, seeing how close it's getting. I certainly hope it hits it by tomorrow evening. I'm about sick of the whole thing, but yet I can't NOT play! I'd never live it down, knowing I have just as good a shot as anyone in winning that awesome grand prize!

But I'd sure like it to wind down sometime tomorrow...as early as possible would be nice. Tired of thinking about it all.

Now they're playing mind games... they changed the site graphic to 97,000+ million sold...so we won't know just how close we are? What are they freakin' nuts?

Those A-holes!!!

:D

Sigh. Well, I'm just going to buy 5-10 songs tomorrow, every few hours or so...hell.

EDIT: hey, now (11:16pm EST) it's back to the tally, showing 99,338,105.

I suppose they'll switch these out, every so often, until the mark is hit.

Its an error. If you look at the script, it still is giving a number. 99,338,105 right now.

Buy the way, whoever wins, it will cost them a lot in taxes. Our greedy, bloated, out-of-control government wants to get its hands on anything it can.

Do I win a prize for this too? ;)

Well, as of 10:23 EST it's at 98, 858, 363. Not sure what that comes out to in timing, but I'm thinking maybe around 2am or so, EST?

Here's the thing (and this is SO not me)...I've got a bit of an alcohol-induced buzz and I'm up and I'm kinda "zingy". I think I might see this one out, gang.

Mondays are usually slow at work. I can scrunge through the day a bit hung over and sleepy...

:D

I'm winning that grand prize, dammit. Or I'm going to give it a good, honest shot!

thegelding
2004-07-11, 21:46
i'm kinda surprised they did it this way actually (though it does create a lot of buzz and people hitting the apple site to see the numbers)...

but right now everyone is putting stuff in their shopping cart and waiting to buy...it would have been nice if apple said, "everyone who buys a song from the iTMS from 95 million to 100 million will be but in a "virtual" hat...50 names will be drawn from all those purchasers (each song purchased is one name in the hat...1 song bought, one name, 50 songs bought, 50 names, etc)...those 50 winners will get a free iPod...then we draw one more name from the "hat" when we get to 100 million and that will be our grand prize winner"

if they had done it like that, apple would already be at the 100 million mark and we wouldn't all be standing around like star wars geeks standing in the movie ticket line 3 days before the opening of the movie...

I thought about this too. They are gonna get stuck at 99,999,999 ;)

I just hope that the servers can handle the rush that'll happen around the magic number. It would be horrible to have the store go down. Talk about the world's worst publicity. :(

Keeping my fingers crossed that Apple has prepared for this well enough.

Ooh, good idea gelding. Then my silly ass wouldn't be up late on a work night, waiting for that final 100,000 to tick down!

:err:

This is so NOT how I hoped this would go (late into Sunday).

:(

Oh well. I'm disabling the sleep/screensaver off on my PowerBook and will be able to look at the front page (it automatically reloads every few minutes) throughout the evening as I lie in bed. In fact, I'm gonna set my alarm for 1am (in case I doze off) to check it and go from there...

;)

This kinda begs the question: what will Apple have on their front page tomorrow? I'm hoping for a big "Congratulations, Paul Scates of Tennessee...your 17" PowerBook, iPod and 10,000-song certificate are on the way!" graphic.

You know, I just thought of something: depending on which artist is the 100,000,000 song purchased, they might somehow factor in to any sort of marking or celebration?

I mean, if it's some long-dead jazz guy, never mind. But what if it was Seal or Fountains of Wayne or Outkast? Maybe they'll sign your iPod (like I give a rip) or will somehow play a role in marking the milestone?

If Sting is the 100,000,000 song sold, does he come to your house to deliver the PowerBook and iPod?

:D

I'm going to go buy lots of Bangles, Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride and Go-Go's shit in just a little while, just in case...

"Hi, Paul..."

I think if you buy a bunch of songs that are in your shopping cart it still only counts as one order and won't increase your chances... but i'm not sure. I would buy the songs separately with one click.

From Apple's Rules:

How To Enter. You will automatically be entered into the Promotion by: 1) downloading a song from iTunes (any Free Download Single of the Week will be deemed an ineligible entry); or 2) a free alternative means of sending an email to Apple at itunes100@apple.com via the iTunes “Tell a Friend” feature (a song download or Tell a Friend email will be deemed an “Entry(ies”). The “Tell a Friend” feature can be easily accessed at iTunes by selecting a song, and clicking the “Tell a Friend” link that is displayed for that song. One Entry will be automatically submitted for each song downloaded or Tell a Friend email sent. The Promotion begins following the downloading of the 95,000,000th iTunes song, and ends with the downloading of the 100 millionth Entry (“End Date”). Only Entries submitted in this time period will be accepted.
