Years ago my gateway was tweaked to play certain sounds for certain events. Is there a way to get my G4 10.4.2 system to do this?

Natively, no, there is no way to play sounds on events.

Xounds, that staph linked to, is a commercial software title that uses the oft-criticized (for causing system-wide problems) third-party APE framework. So, caveat emptor!

Well there's Applescript and/or Automator... depending on the event you want sound for.
