Now that I've abandoned SE for my wonderful Treo 600 they go ahead and release some new models.

First is the long expected P910. It is a minor tweak of the very successful P900 adding a slightly improved, albeit same resolution and still lacking a LED flash, camera. It has a new backlighting system to enhance the legibility of the unit in bright direct sunlight. The internal memory was boosted from 16 MB to 64 MB and the Memory Stick Duo card that ships with it has been upped to 32 MB from 16. There is also going to be a 850 MHz version, I assume so US and Canadian providers can jump on the P910 bandwagon. Besides that, it remains the same.

Oh, there is one more thing. The rumors were true. SE did indeed add a QWERTY thumb board to the underside of the keypad flip. Reports (http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-p910-en.shtml) indicate that it is comfortable to use, but is not significantly faster than using the on-screen keyboard. My initial fears seems to have been unfounded as the unit never appears on the verge of toppling over.

Now for some pics:

In other news SE also announced an 850 MHz version of the S700. Again I assume to get better penetration into the American market. What I don't understand is why SE has not gone quad-band yet like Moto and others have done. It seems ridiculous to produce upwards of 4 different version of the same phone. A good review of the S700, including sample photos from the 1.3 MP camera, can be found here (http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-s700-camera-en.shtml). Now, how the hell does this guy in Russia get his hands on these phone 6 months before they ship?

Now, a pic of the S700.

The Treo Ace (320x320 resolution & BT) and the S700i will both be shipping around the same time so I'm going to have to reevaluate my mobile phone situation then.

Finally I can dump this 616. It has progressively gotten worse over the past month. It locks up, says the SIM is dislodged while I am standing still talking, and gets terrible reception no matter where I am in the country.

I can't stand navigating around on SE phones.

The S700 looks really nice, but I still want the Nokia 6600:

Yeah, there are more hidden, non-intuitive ways of navigating my T-616 than there are checkout lines at a Sam's Club....HATE that. My biggest complaint about my SE is the damned proprietary headset plugs. GRRRRRR.

BUT, the NOKIA interface was getting kind of stinky by the time I decided to go with a Sony. Has it improved at all?

I can't go dropping $300 every time a new phone comes out~

I've never had any issues using the SE phones. Although you could say that I 'grew up' with them. I upgraded from a digital StarTac to the T68m so I quickly became accustomed to it. I could navigate the entire phone either by key presses or by queueing up moves of the joystick.

However, I should mention that the PXXX line do not follow the traditional SE handset UI. I've found those quite usable, if a little Windows like.

Actually, I've found the Nokia phones the most difficult to use. Guess it's just a personal preference thing.

Also I should add that the GUI on new SE phones has been tweaked a bit to deal with some of the usability complaints. It started with the K700 and should be there on the new K500 and S700.

Did anyone else look at the sample photos from the S700? I'm really impressed with the quality. By this time next year we are going to have 2-3 MP cameras with optical zooms and decent glass.

If I didn't love my Treo so much I would be all over a P900 like white on rice.

I grew up on the Nokias, much like I did on Macs. When I got the SE616 I felt like I switched to Windows. Then I started using Salling Clicker and iSync. That was fun for a while but now Nokia phones have BT, so I'm goin' back. I know no Salling Clicker but the Nokia 6600 looks good. I will look at the s700, but I think Nokia phones are much better.

Yeah, I was really impressed with the blinding purple fringes, blurriness (photographer's fault) and excessive noise...
