You can rename the disk from Vista, by right-clicking on the drive and looking at its Properties. Alternatively, when the drive is unmounted, you can use ntfslabel to set the volume name.
The auto-mounting uses the NTFS label as the volume name, so changing that should make it work correctly. Note that Windows does not set a volume name by default, so if you haven't set it manually there, the drive doesn't have one.
