I've had a Shuffle for a couple of weeks now. I'm using it with a Dell PC (Win XP). I'm annoyed by the Shuffle because it does not work with any of my USB 2.0 ports. It only seems to work with the USB 1.1 ports. I've tried all kinds of things to get it to work, but to no avail. I love the Shuffle once it gets loaded with songs, but it's annoying that it doesn't work with all my ports. I've never had that problem with other USB 2.0 devices, so I think Apple must not have done enough testing, especially considering my PC is less than a year old. Anyway, I can't do much about it now, but I wanted to vent some of my frustration
.Edit: I just wanted to add here that if you reply to this thread, please state whether you're using the Shuffle with a Mac or PC. I have a feeling it's the PC users who are getting screwed. Last edited by ezkcdude : 2005-02-22 at 10:09. |

I've had mine for a while, using it with my custom-built PC (ASUS A7N8X-X Deluxe motherboard with USB2.0), and have had absolutely no problems. I've also used it with my new iBook, also with no problems.

I don't understand why people keep saying to blame Dell. First of all, they don't actually make the USB cards, do they? Second, all my other peripherals work fine with these ports. It is only the Shuffle that causes problems. I think Apple needs to take the blame here.

are the other USB 2.0 items powered by external power?

Yes, most are powered externally. But, I do have a SanDisk Titanium Cruzer memory stick (512 MB), and that works fine. Again, though, I'm not the only one having this problem. It seems to me if Apple tested the Shuffle on PC's, wouldn't they have figured this out already? Maybe it's a quality control issue.

Every other device works on my Dell. I've only had problems with the Shuffle. Yeah, it must be Dell, though. There's no way Apple could ever make a mistake, right?

sounds like a power issue to me. perhaps the draw on the shuffle is higher than the draw on the cruzzer. wouldn't surprise me since it has an internal battery it's trying to charge.
i've seen a lot of dell's at work where the front ports don't provide enough power for true 2.0 USB devices. yes, dell uses crappy parts. Google is your friend. Caveat Emptor - Latin for tough titty I tend to interpret things in the way that's most hilarious to me |

Holy cow, people! How can you not even acknowledge the possiblity that Apple might just be at fault here?

edit: I guess it could be that it's not Dell. But it could be Windows. Remember your "plug and play" issues in your first thread here? Yeah. Last edited by torifile : 2005-02-22 at 20:40. |

for me it's easy.
i support over 500 computers at work. we have apples, dells, gateways, ibm's, toshiba's, HP's, hand built and locally made machines. on the dells, the front USB ports have power issues. period. i don't know what you do for a living, but i'd be surprised if you were exposed to as wide a variety of computer hardware as i've been, and since i'm the one who has to troubleshoot devices not working in the front of said dells, i can say without hesitation that the usb ports on the front of most dell models have power draw issues. dude, you got a dell at least now you know where some of that $50 price difference went. There's three fricken' USB ports on the BACK of the Dell that I have, and the Shuffle is not recognized by any of them! Is that a power issue?

yeah. the back ports can have issues too. the front ports almost always do. find a device that draws a decent amount of power over USB and plug it into the back. odds are it won't work either. anything that has an external power source seems to work. items that draw power from the USB port are always sketchy on dells.
next time build your own computer and use quality components. i'd bet almost anything that your same flash drive on another computer with decently powered USB ports would work just fine.
