I'm pretty new to apple products, and I was wondering, I'm not to far from purchasing a 12" PowerBook, but I really can't wait for Tiger to come out, my question is, I'm positive that my Dad will buy Tiger when it comes out, but can I use the same one on my notebook?

Also, say I purchased a PowerBook within this week, isin't there some sort of free update for Tiger if I purchased it within 30 days of the release of the newer software?

Keep in mind that Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has not even been announced yet and, thus, all of the features are not publicly known.
Thus, this belongs in Speculation and Rumors. Moving... No, you cannot legally install your father's copy. Each license can only be used on one machine. You could, however, encourage him to buy the "family pack" that allows you to install on 5 computers for $199, less than the cost of two regular licenses. Again, it has not been announced if Apple will offer the family pack for Tiger as it has with Panther, but it only makes perfect sense. No, there is no policy on getting free or even discounted updates if you purchase before a major software update. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. According to Apple, you must purchase one copy of OS X for each computer you install it on. There is a five-license family pack that lets up to five people in the same household install OS X, and it costs $199. However, there's nothing actually preventing you from using the same discs to install OS X on multiple computers. Apple doesn't use any kind of CD key or activation for their OS, they just work on the honor system. As for the upgrade, Apple has historically only given upgrades to people who buy a computer after the new OS is announced but before it starts shipping with new Macs. Since Tiger doesn't have an official release date, you probably won't qualify for an upgrade price. And keep in mind - it's not a free upgrade, you must pay $20 for them to send you a set of upgrade discs, and that's only if you buy a Mac late enough to qualify (which you most likely didn't). Otherwise you must purchase the full license. uǝʌǝ ʇuop ı sıɥʇ sı ʇɐɥʍ ▲ ▲ ▲ |

EDIT: I admit I'm not perfect when it comes to grammar, but the above is just well... let's just say that "run on sentence" is an understatement. Last edited by .Hack : 2005-03-20 at 21:14. |

Oh lighten up. At least he's spelling most things correctly. Run on sentences are a fairly minor infraction when compared to some of the things I see people post.

That said, here's a list of new features and improvements that Apple has told its developers about:

WoWoWoW Brad!! Thats pretty snazzy
My number one favorite feature is definitely burnable folders. <explian burnable folders > Right now every time you try to burn using the OS you have to copy all the files to a disk image and this takes a loooooong time... I wouldn't even bother doing a dvd from with in the OS on my slow HD, it would take forever. Also if you're low on space and you want to burn a dvd then currently you need the same amount of space free as the amount of space of what your burning. Dvd is up to 9 GB but say you have 2GB left.. not a pretty picture. You would have to burn a 1 gb dvd, a 2gb dvd and so on until you have 10Gb. That is allot of money wasted.. and if you want to avoid this and buy something like roxio that is a 100 dollars anyway. I rather spend the 100 on a new OS with allot of other features. But burnable folders just saves files as aliases then burns the real ones. <Done explaining burnable folders > less time, no space, its a beautiful thing. Can you imaging using the current system with 50GB blue ray disk!!! covering my ass: There is some evidence that this feature is there but apple has not officially said it exist... I want to believe though. John Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' Last edited by NaMo4184 : 2005-03-20 at 22:37. |

What's really funny is that CoreData got *one line*. It may be one of the most important technologies in 10.4. Heh.

CoreData allows developers to create an internal model of their data, and have it spooled to disk. Now, this doesn't sound that interesting, since it sounds at first glance a lot like serialization in Java and other languages. Except that it can end up in a binary flat file, like Java... or an XML document (with a publishable schema so anyone else can import and understand the file structure)... or being placed in a new or live SQL database.
No code change for the developer, other than selecting which format to use. This means that in theory *anyone* can read *any* app format easily, and that at some point, Apple can say "Okay guys, we're moving to a database file system!" and all CoreData-using developers will be ready. WinFS? Feh. We've got your migration path right here, under everyone's noses. Now, does this mean that any app can read another app's file and *use* it? No. It means that the file formats are open and readable, only. Each app would still have to figure out what to *do* with the data, but it is a huge step towards ubiquitous application interaction. My other brain is hung like a horse too. #IRC isn't old school. Old school is being able to say 'finger me' with a straight face. |

Has anyone heard anything concerning possible enhancements to Divx compatibility in Quicktime 7? Specifically native support for mp3 audio in Divx and full DivX and 3ivx support? A WMA/WMV plugin would be helpful too but that's really out of Apple's hands I suppose.
The future is tomorrow! |
