Nice ice there Chinney. Not much ice left here, despite the fact that it was -12ºC Tuesday night.

Up until the rain finally decided to show up yesterday, fire was the theme in northern California. Agricultural burns all over the place, plus the occasional grass fire.

Actually there is plenty of snow and ice, finally, in Ottawa. That picture of the icy bare ground was taken rather in Nova Scotia just after Christmas when a sudden thaw had melted the snow and then everything froze up again. It created some interesting effects of which I will share a couple more snaps.

How far away from the owl were you when you took that photo? I am always amazed that you can get shots like that. Are they not a very shy bird?

Most owls tend to like tall old growth trees to hide in. Barred Owls on the other hand tend to stay near the edge of the tree line, so they are easier to spot. During the day, as long as they feel secure, wont move around much.

I'm not sure of the actual distance, but the EXIF data says over 50 feet away (Nikon EXIF doesn't give exact data for anything over 50ft away). There was water between the dike I was on and the owl, so I suspect it felt secure where it was.

This was the sunset in Vegas the other day. It actually looked like the sky was on fire. Blurry camera phone pic taken while driving.

I've just consumed about half of this delicious creature:

(Just a roast chicken, but pretty tasty by midweek standards!)

Went back with my parents to do to KSC Up Close tour. Atlantis was in the VAB this time. And I brought my Nikon D60 instead of using my iPhone 4.

What are the dots that reflected the flash?

Hmm interesting. 7 months after the last launch, and they still haven't rolled the Mobile Launcher Platform back to the parking area outside the VAB.

I like those snowy field shots AWR and especially the visual effect of the road heading up to hills in that 3rd shot: 'follow the yellow dirt road'.

They did. It wasn't there last time I was on the tour back in November. I think they are keeping 39A in the Shuttle configuration with a Shuttle MLP for the tourists to see what the pad would look like after a launch until they have to reconfigure it for the SLS. Or they needed the space where they usually park them so they went, " Oh why not move it to 39A for the tourists" or something like that. But, I do find it interesting that they haven't started the demo on 39A's FSS and RSS and constructing the lightning protection towers like they did on 39B. I asked about that when I was on the tour last time and all the guide said was the demo was on hold indefinitely.

I do find it funny as that is MLP-3 that launched STS-135.

I'm guessing the reason they went ahead and razed the FSS/RSS at 39B was because Ares 1-X blasted the hell out of it and it would have taken a lot of time and money to repair with only a handful of STS missions remaining.

Today was sunny in Paris. Here's someone making the most of the weather in the Jardin du Luxembourg:

It was only about 8°C (46°F), so I'm guessing from his t-shirt that he must have been jogging (or worse!).

Hey, nice one! I like the many layers of depth, from the dark foreground all the way to the clouds at the top.

Thanks. I think the compression from using a telephoto (300mm + 1.4x TC) lens is what gives this image that strong feeling of depth. I've shot this area with a wider lens, and unless you are careful it looks flatter than a pancake. Throw in how the light cuts through the clouds into a small layer of the frame and it works!

Wow, nice capture. What was that Snowy chowing down on?

As for here, snowy owls migrate down the west coast during the winter. There were 18 in Delta during December, and now only four remain. I'm sure they will be heading north soon.
