Hoping for a Google Doodle tomorrow, but it's not up on the international sites yet...

Mainly, I just want to hear offended people attempt to use the portmanteau "Gaygle" in serious conversation.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

July, like January, seems to be a popular month for independences and patriotic celebrations, it seems. There's Canada Day on July 1, the Fourth of July on...July 4th, and Bastille Day on July 14th. Bastille Day is sort of a bit of a misnomer because the holiday really commemorates the Fête de la Fédération, which took place on July 14th, 1790, on the first anniversary of all that Bastille business. It's been 220 years since then. (The French Constitution of 1791 wasn't made official until September, uh, 1791.)

I have no idea who the pictured figure is supposed to be. I'm not so good with faces, maybe someone who is actually French can help me out?

In any case, a very Happy Country Day to anyone celebrating independence or a patriotic holiday in July.

EDIT: Google and others are encouraging Americans to learn more about their First Amendment rights this July 1.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

There's a small hint in the image name, btw.

He's probably a lesser-known figure, though.

I can't see that on my iPad.

Also, +1 for the maple leaf

My guess is Robespierre.

Anyway, happy Canada Day!

Edit: or is it Lafayette, that seems less likely. Oh I don't know!

Jean-Francois de la Barre?

French nobleman, tortured and beheaded on this date, 244 years ago. Not one of his better days, I'm guessing.

I Googled "July 1, 1766" and "chevalier" (horseman)...

Chevalier de la Barre is a small icon who represents free will in the face of religious tyranny. He was executed for the following crimes:
  • Not removing his hat in the presence of Catholic clergy
  • Singing "blasphemous" songs
  • Possessing "forbidden" books
  • Allegedly defacing a crucifix (no witnesses)
The picture in the speed hole is a photo of his statue in Paris, France.

While not as widely known outside of French and Selfish Heathen circles today, there's no reason to think that political movers and shakers at the time (like, say, the US Founding Fathers?) weren't aware of de la Barre, and of others like him. As a reaction to those and other abuses of power, the US government is emphatically not a religious institution.

Which is why the first amendment is so important. LL Cool J says so.

I can write things like "I deny the holy spirit!" and not get shot (well, by the government), and for that I'm happy. Also, this is why those of you who think I'm somehow anti-American are wrong. Just sayin'.

Very nice. I saw the Declaration of Independence in the speedholes first, but just now noticed the flag behind "applenova". Subtle and understated, but it's nice to see. Thank you.
