I think a few relatives of the spider in the holoween theme live in my house:

They get a little upset if you get too close...

why did I click on this thread?

(as an aside) I've pretty much become desensitised to our Hallowe'en spider.

Nice pics, you took those yourself? So did you kill the spider or let it run free? Do you know what kind of spider it is?

I think 709 & Mac+ are gonna love this thread!

Edit: I see Mac+ does. Posted while I was posting.

Yep, I took them with my canon SD300, and yes, I let it run free (as a rule I don't kill spiders). I'm not sure what type of spider it is, it is a hunting/roaming spider, and a bunch of them show up in my house every spring.

Okay, so just how big are these things?

I can't believe you're saying, in a calm voice, that a *bunch* of them show up IN your house *every* spring.

Please tell me you live in Australia, or someplace equally far away. EEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I think tarantulas look positively innocent compared to 'your' spider.

In my neck of the woods, we have these large, fleshy beige spiders that hang out on the surface of walls (no web). But they aren't hairy, and they're quite placid. They're about four inches across, including legs, as they sit on the wall. I haven't seen one for a few years, but I developed quite a fondness awhile back for one that lived inside the house near the door to the garage. I even saw him leap on a cricket one day. The leap was pretty dramatic, but there was no struggle, since the cricket appeared to be missing a leg.

Is that the same spider that was biting you on your chest on the sofa, Carol?

Damn! Don't you guys ever forget *anything*?!!!!

No, if I were to see that huge beige spider on my chest, I would die of a heart attack within seconds.

The sofa spider - I finally saw it (the little bastard! ) - was a small black spider of some kind. It's a white leather sofa, yet no matter how I took it apart, I never could find anything. I finally killed it, but I'll never trust that sofa again!

You know, I had to disable image loading just to open this thread. I could never, never live in Australia, or wherever it is that you live.

I usually don't mind spiders and such, but I think those buggers would raise my heart rate a few beats

I don't mind spiders, but I don't like the idea of them hanging around my bed either. And something like that would probably give me some serious willies. It would send my wife through the roof. She doesn't like spiders and creepy crawlies, and she doesn't like it that I usually refuse to kill them. I've nothing against them, so I usually just try to get them outside when they are found.

If it's Australian, it's not common.

I really don't think it is.

We do, however, get these:

Fuck you staph - I thought this thread would only have images in the first post.

That's hideous. But, let me say folks, Australia is not covered in the buggers. It really is a beautiful country.

Why do people get funny about spiders? (Don't mean to be rude btw.) Did you all have bad experiences or something (biten, poisoned, choke on one)? Its just kinda strange how were so big and powerful (and that we have shoes with soles), but so many are scared of spiders...

I know I shouldn't come back to this thread - but I saw 709 had the last post, and I thought it would be OK. So I clicked on the return arrow icon and was taken directly to his message. Of course, I had to scroll up to see what he was commenting on.

I just realized—this is the second message board I've been to where the main page has a big spider graphic on top. The first was "The Unofficial Escape Velocity Website" from a LONG time ago (mid-90s). It has a groovy green-on-black color scheme and a big spider on top (representing the "web" board, I guess).

Spiders don't normally bother me though. I have even considered getting a pet tarantula, since they're not too hard to care for and they don't require constant attention.

Hey, Brad, I read that Tennessee has at least one spider for every square inch of land in the state.

I don't see how people living in Australia ever survive childhood. I mean, practically 'everything' there seems to be poisonous. And wasn't it staph who talked about these giant Australian spiders that drop out of trees onto peoples' heads? God, what a horror *that* would be!

Yeah, me too. Except for the demon sofa spider ( ), I try to catch critters in a large water glass and set them free outside.

I caught a black widow in the garage once, but I had a dog and didn't want to release a poisonous spider into my yard. So I got in the car and drove that spider to a vacant lot a block away. I found it a spot that looked like a good home and released it there.

I know that may sound ridiculous to many of you; but I dislike destroying life in any of its forms. I mean, life is so precious, and every creature is such a miraculous work of art - small masterpieces of biological engineering. I can't bear to crush out such wonders, if I can help it.

It made me feel terrible when I had to have a hive of Africanized bees removed from a niche inside the eaves of my house. They had lots of honeycombs in there, poor things. But I had tree guys coming to do some major branch pruning, and couldn't risk the bees attacking the tree guys.
