Autodesk, who shunned the mac market for close to 15 years, is now one of its leading supporters.
They announced today that they would release the "LT" version of AutoCAD for the Mac to joint the full version, which they released last year. The big news however, is that they are releasing it on the Mac App Store. They are one of the first major third party developers to get on board with the App Store with a big price software title. AutoCAD LT 2012 will sell for $899.99 on the App Store and Autodesk is ok with Apple's terms, which typically dictate a 30% share of all revenue on the store. AutoCAD 2012 will continue to be sold outside the app store for $4,000. Let's hope that Adobe, Microsoft, and others follow. |

Wonder if they're working on bringing AutoCAD Map 3D to the Mac. Could make my work a bit easier.

I use AutoCAD 2012 at work, so LT on the Mac is intriguing....but $900? Can't go that far...

pscates, I think the problem with expecting third party developers like Adobe to offer drastic Apple-like cuts is that those developers have to pay 30% to Apple where as Apple keeps 100% for itself and can therefore justify a big cut. Apple will also sell a lot more volume, because they are Apple.
To Apple, selling on the App Store removes the middle man. To everyone else, Apple is just another middle man. There also seems to be a fear of cutting their traditional pricing and not being able to go back to it if the experiment fails unfortunately. |

Well, Adobe CS also costs more than is allowed on Apple's store. You cannot sell software for >$999.99 on the store.
