after installing 10.4.2 winodws media player no longer works. Is there anyway to make VLC read the WMV streams?

If you have the URL you can use 'Open Network' from VLC's file menu.

Of course, that'll only work with older streams. If there's any WMV9 or WMA3 data, VLC can't play it.

I had to reinstall after the 10.4.2 update. Now it's back to its old sucky self.

Another possible solution is MPlayer, which will play almost anything. In fact I've had MPlayer perform better with some .wmv files than WMP, although your milage may vary. "It's like a new pair of underwear. At first it's constrictive, but after a while it becomes a part of you." |

Like VLC, MPlayer too cannot play newer WMP files with WMV9 or WMA3 data.

Ah yes, my mistake, Mplayer can only play WMV9 when x86 DLLs are available. Perhaps another advantage of going Mactel?
