hey everyone!
i got a call from my local apple store that they had them in stock. i came in and really wanted to play with it before i bought it and they went ahead and opened one of their display models a day early so i could check it out (i'm sure they really wanted to see it too) so after much thinking i took a chance and exchanged my g5 for new imac intel duo 2.0 ghz tonite.. first thoughts: everything is pretty much like my old imac g5 native apps are way fast! the startup time is fast and it has the same chime as before. i've had a problem intalling some 3rd party apps mostly freeware and my driver for my mouse. its still quiet! if you want to know anything or run something let me know! i'll report in a bit about mac office and CS2 i have to install them first |

Excellent, congratulations! I have some money to buy a computer for my office, and I have decided that it's time to go Mac - and an iMac would be ideal. I'd be interested how well Office works, how much noise it makes in everyday usage, how programs like FireFox and Thunderbird work (which programs did you have trouble with?), .... and I'm sure I'll think of some more questions soon

Can we still open the iMac from the back? That is the one thing I am confused about. If you can open it from the rear, take pics! And congrats, even though I will hold on to my iMac G5. The best iMac ever.

Does it make coffee?
OK um a serious one, what's the fan noise like? Try putting on Seti@home or folding@home on, that should run the CPU at full tilt! What happens when you open heaps of apps, like say if you opened all the ilife apps at once? |

i tried opening all the ilife apps and it did good considering its on 512 ram.
then i went ahead and opened everything on my dock, address book, calander, word, photobooth, ichat, mail, safari and again it handled it well. i know it can open them a hell lot faster with a gig of ram. i saw it tonite @ the apple store on their demo one. that thing was quick! i plan to buy 2 gigs for it this week.. |

Happy for you. I am waiting for the next Duo Intel chip with 64 bit or may be something that come out for April 1. I got an iMac rev B, and I do not feel right if I spend money for 2 iMac in less than a year. Otherwise I have to give this iMac to my dad or grandma, but I still feel very attach to it. Still waiting for new MacBook (iBook) and new Mac mini also.

I think swimming through wet cememt would be acheivable compared to opening all the iLife Apps on my 1GHz (768MB RAM) PowerBook! iPhoto with over 2000 photos take mintue or so to load up just on it's own! Can't wait till I get my iMac! |

And, assuming that the logic board will even support a faster CPU.

On a side note: Intel CPUs are almost never soldered onto the board anymore, even on laptops. They use a low profile ZIF socket with a screw to lock the CPU in (as opposed to a lever like on desktop CPUs) |

msriotdoll,
Thanks for this thread. In particular, your last post has gone a long way towards helping me make a decision (was was wavering between iMac G5 iSight, or Intel iMac). After reading scattered reports from people with their new Intel iMacs, I'm not hearing dramatic gains in speed, and in some cases I hear slower performance, even on Intel native apps. I'm sure apps will be faster across the board a year from now, but I need a computer for 'this year', and I'm not a software developer, I'm an end-user that needs a machine I CAN USE Now. So I think, like you, I'll take the hit of not having the 'very latest update' in favor of having a robust machine that works very well and fast on $1000s of dollars of software I already have. I support your decision to go get back your iMac G5. In fact, this may be what Apple was scared of, and why they're made the seemingly odd (but now logical) choice of keeping iMac G5's on their website for sale at the same price. I'm now convinced that the timing of this update was for Shareholders/Wall Street, rather than the all important end-users (you and me). Apple wasn't really ready to make this switch when they did, and they are asking us to not only eat the bugs of rushed systems, but also "pay" to upgrade a $1200 software suite you may have bought a couple of weeks before the announcement (e.g. Universal Binary versions of Apple software). I don't care if it's "only" $49; it's still wrong to charge on the most recent version simply because of the processor switch. Older version, I can swallow that, but not the latest versions of Apple software, that's wrong. Also, the original prediction Jobs made (Intel switch in mid-2006) was probably more accurate. So that means stability and usable apps are most likely a year away. A lot can happen in a year, and I can't afford to wait a year for a stable/fast/widely app. supported a computer. I'm going with the iMac G5 iSight. Last edited by mercmerc : 2006-01-15 at 14:07. |
