Looks like I'm going to the dark side, the DSL is no longer cutting it for me. Not interested in paying Comcast for a modem though, that seems silly. Luckily, it looks like they support personal modems pretty well: http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net
Click on DOCSIS 3.0 and Only Retail Devices, and let me know what you'd recommend. I'm just starting down the rabbit hole, any suggestions or data appreciated. |

Big fan of Motorola here. Running strong for years. Transfers at max speed consistently on speed tests. Before that I had a Linksys modem which was great, but not DOCSIS 3.0 so I had to upgrade.

No reason to overpay for an Arris (formerly Motorola) cable modem. The latest SB6183 retails for $130 and it's the exact same Broadcom reference platform as this SMC D3CM1604 for ~$73 shipped.
Technically these 16x4 modems are overkill, but it doesn't hurt to have more bonded channels in case a few of them get overloaded. In late 2016, we may see the jump to D3.1 modems, but it's still cheaper to buy a modem now and avoid several months of rental fees. |

I have the Arris/Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 back in October for like $85 from Amazon. Has been great so far and haven't had any drops. I don't understand why everyone doesn't buy their own. I have Time Warner and they now charge $12/mo to lease the modem, which is unreal.

Thanks guys. Went with the SB6141 on a sale, it topped several review lists that I saw published in the last few months.

Lemme guess, The Wirecutter? Meh. I guess I should have made it more clear about the D3CM1604 being the downright best modem available. Not just that, but the SB6141 actually had a terrible firmware / CMTS compatibility issues for months. It's been fixed, but the D3CM1604 is still based on a better chipset and as cheap or cheaper.

Well crud, thanks for the heads up on the potential issues. I'm still in the return window, so perhaps I'll swap it out.
Hell, I've only been waiting for over four months for Comcast to install the damned connection... |
