When Keepin' it Kitteh Goes Wrong.

This person deserves a slap upside the head, even if it is kind of funny. Can you imagine being at a business lunch or something and breaking this card out to pay.

Didn't they figure out how to reverse engineer credit card numbers that have been blurred in such a manner? At least enough to get rid of the vast majority of ambiguity?

It's possible to reverse engineer almost any kind of image distortion. That's why declassified documents feature big black lines, rather than pixellation.

I don't think you could reverse engineer it without the original file that was modified. Those are just solid tone blocks. Don't see how any further information could be deduced from them.

If you know what algorithm was used to generate the pixels it's very easy to accomplish. That's the part that takes the time. There are also dozens of software packages that specialise in unmasking mosaic pixels, like Gmask.

Remember that pedophile who posted to 4chan a few years ago, with a swirled face? That was reverse engineered in a matter of hours.

It depends on how much information is removed from the image when whatever effect is applied to it. That swirl effect apparently doesn't remove enough info to be irreversible. Clearly an effect like "Replace Entire Image with Single Average Color of Image" could not be reversed.

Ugh.

A swirl just moves the pixels around, easy to undo: just move them back by reversing the same algorithm.

The mosaic effect on the credit card above takes all the pixels within an area, averages the colour and fills the area with that single colour. You can't just undo that... The only way would be to somehow calculate what number would have to be behind the square to make that exact shade, but that's near enough to impossible.

there is a limit to it, but it isn't impossible AND the process reduces the number of card numbers you would need to try to find one that works...

now this does nothing nowadays since we don't know the guy's security number...

I'm not sure why I think this is so funny. Maybe because I can't help but read it with a big dumb goofy voice in my head.

Holy crap! Imagine you walk outside and step onto the porch to get some firewood... you turn the corner and see that. Would be an accomplishment to avoid peeing on yourself (then get back in the house without your arm missing). That's really odd. Mountain Lions are usually not like Bears in the sense of getting used to humans and wandering around on their property / under their porches, etc. Usually they stay in the woods and wait for you to pass under their tree, like any good death-cat would.
