I have friend with a nasty Powerbook problem. Wonder if anyone has any ideas what is going on.

Powerbook G4 867, running 10.2.3. No after-market RAM. He ran Software update and downloaded and installed some updates (he can't recall which.) At the end of the update process, the computer hung. He powered down via pressing and holding the power key.

When he restarted, he got: A folder with a question mark, then a happy mac, then the grey loading screen. It didn't progress from here.

He shut down, zapped PRAM, reset NVRAM, ran FSCK (No errors found). Still no dice.

He reinstalled OSX from his original system discs with an "archive and install" It worked ok, but he had to reset his password as by now he had forgotten it.

Now, when it boots, it boots up normally, but jumps into Darwin, not the OSX GUI.

Any ideas what he's done?
