Actually, I read that ridiculously long thread in it's entirety.

I see where it can get confusing/misinterpreted:

The "coaxial web" does in fact connect a standalone NIM (Motorola or bridged Actiontec) with the ONT because anything connected to the web is connected to everything else.

BUT in an ethernet option mode, no communication is actually sent between the NIM and the ONT. If a STB/DVR requests guide info or VOD, this is how the flow of info would work:

STB/DVR request for VOD or guide info:
STB/DVR to NIM via coaxial web
NIM to router via ethernet
router to ONT via ethernet
ONT to Verizon via FiOS (data wavelength)

Verizon response to request for VOD:
Verizon to ONT via FiOS (video wavelength)
ONT to STB/DVR via coaxial web

Verizon response to request for guide info:
Verizon to ONT via FiOS (data wavelength)
ONT to router via ethernet
router to NIM via ethernet
NIM to STB/DVR via coaxial web

So, yes, ethernet and coaxial can both be connected to the ONT, BUT data communication only uses one or the other. In the ethernet option mode, coaxial is only used for video feed between ONT and STB/DVR directly, and STB/DVR to NIM for requests, which relay the info through the router (which is connected via ethernet).

Both coax and twisted pair can carry data simultaneously from the ONT. But what you're trying to get at is that TCP/IP traffic has to be configured for one or the other.
