Get you some Kepler... (aka some potentially earth-like planet we'll never see much less step foot on, because it's 600 light years away, so better we take care of this planet instead until we have a direct worm-hole connection).

I get this week's post-whore award with three in five minutes (not intentional of course). Just went to NYT and saw this:

Revising the famous 'Blue Marble' pic, the renamed Suomi NPP polar-orbiting weather satellite has delivered this awesome new view of the Americas.

That's a classic example of corporate culture gone wrong. NASA would have scrubbed the launch if the component supplier definitively stated that there was a problem.
What I find funny here is that Richard Feynman is known for 'discovering' the low temperature brittleness of the connectors during a committee meeting about the disaster by placing one of the components in ice cold water and snapping it apart. Only issue is that this engineer and others had written reports that Feynman and the committee had seen, so Feynman didn't discover anything and the story is more than grandiose. |

Rage. After two straight evenings of being glued to Spaceflight Now's live video feed for the entire duration of the launch window, both ending in a last-minute scrub for weather, the Atlas 5 (551 config with its heaviest payload ever) launch, carrying the MUOS-1 military communication satellite, has now been pushed back to Wednesday at the earliest.

"This thing fucking SUCKS.... I HAYTE NASA!" Meantime, check out the latest planetary discovery. Nearby and uber-water-ific! Fear the "hot ice" and "super-fluid water". BTW WTH is "super-fluid" water? I thought all water was "super fluid". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17117030 But we need a better name for our next home (we need to evolve gills and heat-shield scales of course - no problem the Umbrella Corporation is on it) than GJ 1214b. I think we should name it Durden 1. In Tyler we trust. Plus it sounds like "Durandal". ...into the light of a dark black night. |

I'm not an avid poster or space follower like some of you guys, but I found the images in the WISE Multimedia Gallery very fascinating. WISE is NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, it's mission is to image the entire sky in infrared.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos locates, plans to raise Apollo 11's Saturn V first stage engines.
This is cool as hell, but NASA is being lame and claiming full legal ownership of them once recovered. Come on guys, they were on an expendable rocket and got dumped into 14,000 feet of water out in the Atlantic, apparently never to be seen again. And you want them back now? Isn't there some statute of limitations as to how long you can claim ownership of lost/abandoned hardware? Also, what the hell happened to the rest of the giant S-1C first stage? They said they found the engines, but apparently nothing else... |

I will be going to KSC where they will take me to the Space Shuttle Landing Facility and I will be able to see the 747 with Discovery on its back takeoff to head up to Washington-Dulles International Airport. And as to Apollo 11 engines still being owned by NASA, he knows that. All he asks is that NASA puts them in a museum up in Seattle. Though the Smithsonian may lay claim to them. They can put them next to Discovery. giggity |

One thing I've never seen but wondered: how exactly do they put the shuttle on the back of a plane like that? A series of cranes and lifts? Got any pictures of that?
