My NINE YEAR+ (!!) old iMac finally needs to go. Been running this old whore since '06. It's giving the kids fits for their homework and if I run it too hard I have to let the damn thing cool down before I can start again.

I was going to grab a 4K and upgrade the hard drive (fuck you, Tim) to a 2TB fusion. Kind of the high end of my budget, 27" is out of the question...

Anyone here seen one of these in the wild yet?
Yes, they are very nice.

I'd really recommend splurging for the 27" though. It's a beauty.

Dammit Mur.

If you do a tear-down of the old machine you had BETTER post it online - preferably as an IMGUR album for posterity (realizing how long "posterity" lasts on the Internet).

When's the next expected update? I guess I'll have so read back upstream to see.

Ah, I don't have the oldest iMac here! I was sure I did. Murbot has me beaten by one year (I have the mid-tier model from the August 2007 lineup, the first aluminum/glass models). I got it as a refurb in September of 2008, but it's the August 2007 release/specs. Suddenly I don't feel like the most behind-the-curve person here (but I may be soon if he upgrades).

I'm just going to use this thing until it explodes and/or dies completely (which could be any minute, based on how hot it sometimes gets and how crazy the video/screen acts at times). And then probably just buy a 64 or 128GB iPad Air 2 (or whatever the current model is at that time).

I don't think I can justify another Mac purchase at this point. I'd rather just deal with iOS anyway, truth be told. Then I'd just have one OS from Apple to hate/bitch about...simplifies my life greatly!

Yeah, after a few years of monthly hardware updates, I kind of went the other way and let this one be. We're still rocking the MacBook I bought not too long after this iMac... I'd have to look up what the hell it even is and when I bought it. I barely resemble the early 2000's version of myself.

Sorry Drew, no teardowns until this actually dies. After I wipe all the schoolwork and accumulated junk off of this it'll be a decent second machine in the house. It does some crazy stuff, like Paul says with the video/screen going very wonky, so who knows. Could be next week or next year. When it happens I'll take it apart and take some pics for you if you want, as long as I can still pour gas on it and burn it up when I'm done.

Wish I could just grab a maxed out 27" but even going 4K on the 21.5 is going to be a challenge right now. *sigh*

One benefit to having this old thing for so long is that the 21.5 will seem huge compared to this little 17er!

Oh, and yes Paul, I get the iOS thing... to be honest if I didn't have the kids here with homework, researching things, etc, I think I'd go with my iPhone and a maxed out iPad Pro with keyboard. That would be pretty slick.

Yeah but I don't just rub my junk all over my iMac and think about the glory days. It actually do stuff like download pancake recipes and look up beard growing tips.

Um, I have the first CoreDuo iMac from around 2004 or 2005? I keep it at the office and use it occasionally, so it's not my main work machine but it's pretty spiffy. Had to replace the HDD a year or so ago.

Fuck you Murbot! I do NOT rub my junk all over it!

I rub it *on* my junk! There's a difference, dammit!

If this is true, and Apple is supposed to be ahead of the curve due to its bulk orders, why does the 21" still have a 5400rpm drive?

I thought Tim Cook was supposed to be a procurement genius?

Apple is not using "SSD's" in the traditional sense (2.5" SATA). They are using custom PCI-e flash modules and significantly faster controllers. It will still be more expensive for a while. I would guess that the first Flash-only iMac will have 250GB of storage, which is a lot less than the current 1TB. Still a year or two away, though.

It'll happen soon enough.

But, yeah, procurement specialist should be able to procure some good pricing, specially. Or something.

Is this because of their obsession with making the desktop ridiculously thin?

Well, I think that might be an excuse used by those concerned over specs. The real reason is that PCI-e is so much faster. And not by some small margin, either. The current 15" Retina uses PCI-e flash running at 2.5GB/s ( ), where the best 2.5" SATA SSD's are running 550 to 600 MB/s. Even the nominal 24GB Fusion Drive is running at 800MB/s.

Heck, even the PC-tuners know the real drive speed is in PCI-e expansion cards.

Most new laptops and desktop motherboards have SATA Express or M.2/NVMe interfaces, so they're on par with Apple's useless proprietary version of the same basic technology.

Oh yes, I would love a PCIe SSD but I can't possibly justify the cost. That's one of those "if I won the lottery" things.

Any Mac you buy already has a PCIe/NVMe based SSD at this point. Any PC you buy should have one too unless you really feel like limiting your SSD to 550MB/s or so.

I just rebuilt my "gaming" PC last month, and I picked up a motherboard that has two Thunderbolt 2 ports – but no M.2 port. D'oh! (Ah, well – at least it has decent SATA3 ports to run my EVO 850/840 SSDs.)

Also, new 5K iMac is sweet. My (vintage!) late 2009 27-inch workhorse has finally been given a well-earned retirement. (I still need to pull out its EVO 850 at some point, though.)

This week's CES seems to be all about USB-C peripherals. Would be nice to have a Mac desktop to use them with.

The H277HU should've been Apple's MacBook Display™. It has pass-through charging, and comes in the right colors. Instead, it's by Acer.

Can these run a second monitor at all? Maybe via Thunderbolt or whatever? I know what I'm really going for is a Mac Pro...but it is so old now and this has a great monitor to start with.

Are you asking about the iMac? If so yes, they all support external monitors via Thunderbolt/Mini-DVI output. I believe the 27" models can support two external monitors, but I'm not sure if both will be able to push full resolution, it would depend on the GPU.

Yes, I was asking about the iMac. Thanks for the info too. This means I can actually get one if it works out for me. I love the idea of the new Mac Pro, but need it updated first. Then again, I need these iMacs updated too.

I can confirm that a 27" retina iMac with a Radeon R9 M390 can push an Eizo RX850 monitor (resolution:4096 x 2160) or two Eizo GX540s (each at 2048 x 2560). This is a common config sold by my job. We use 2 of the mini-DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapters.

Awesome! Thank you very much. I might just get an iMac next then.
