Who here is up to start the applenova folding team? I think its a good idea.
I don't think there is any such thing as a foldong( ) team so I changed it. I just made Team AppleNova. The number is 39160. Founder of the Applenova Folding Team Last edited by Zodiac : 2004-12-02 at 16:27. |

MOD EDIT:
If you're looking for the quick and dirty details of how to get started folding, see this thread: http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=24213 - FFL Founder of the Applenova Folding Team Last edited by FFL : 2007-06-12 at 22:21. Reason: added sticky thread link |

Actually, i've been folding for a while for Team MacOSX. Great program to use your computer's spare CPU cycles to research a cure for various diseases. Unlike SETI, I actually get the impression from scientists at work that this crap actually makes a difference.
As you can see, I've been folding with them for a while. I like having a Mac OSX based team in the top 20 teams on the list. I think it's a good form of evangalism. Google is your frenemy. Caveat Emptor - Latin for tough titty I tend to interpret things in the way that's most hilarious to me |

OK then, I'll try to explain it. It is a program that you can download as a screensaver, graphical or console based interface. In the program/internet, you can join and make teams. But what the programs does, is take 3D images of protiens( they're in diseases, solvents, chemicals etc) and folds them into some kind of image that helps scientists that are running this, cure diseases, find properties of chemicals etc. Now, this is getting huge and around 1.5 million people are doing it. And the program takes all your spare processor power and uses it. It doesn't slow your computer down because it ONLY uses spare power. Like, if your using a program that uses 99% of your power, the folding program only uses 1 percent of it.
P.S- folding a protien can take a long time. My emac 1.25GHz takes about 2.5 days to fold one. C'mon! some mod or admin should make a team and make a link to our site on the team page so people know we are helping to cure cancer! Founder of the Applenova Folding Team |

If someone wants to step up and create an Apple Nova team, that would be great. Doesn't really matter who, just whoever wants to do it, and we'll link to it from the site.

Ya info on how to sign up for the team would be great. This sounds like a really good idea.
edit: Also, what kind of bandwidth does it take up? (ie: is it uploading information to the internet at all times or does it wait until it is done a specific task before it uploads?) Last edited by onlyafterdark : 2004-08-30 at 18:52. |

This link should give you access to the client. There are a few different versions. One is a screensaver, which is the normal client. The second link there is a background process only. It runs all of the time, at the lowest priority. It won't use CPU cycles that other programs need, but will use all of the unused cycles.
The Increase.app program there will automatically enter team 1971 as your default folding preference. (since a team member wrote the app. and all) Otherwise, just enter the team number of team AppleNova and away you go. Either way will work just fine, although I will say that Team MacOSX is in one of the top spots, and shooting for a top 10 overall place. Although all competition (in fun) aside, it doesn't really matter who you fold for. Folding at all is what helps. The teams and stats are just to pique interest and keep people going, as folding isn't actually all that exciting. Your CPU just sits there and folds proteins in the background. However, unlike SETI, you're doing real work, right now, that will probably have real world results. One note though, it's probably not a good idea to run it on a laptop at 100%, as it can cause heat problems. Just something to keep in mind. Google is your frenemy. They probably joined the OS X team, not AN's team.
As for me, I'd be in, but this 12" isn't a big fan of heat to begin with and having the processor running @ 100% 24/7 would be a big negatory. That, and it might melt my nuts Come waste your time with me |

the downloads depend on the protein they send you to fold. usually under 6MB.
although you download once, then fold for days, so it's not too noticeable, even on dial-up. Google is your frenemy. Caveat Emptor - Latin for tough titty I tend to interpret things in the way that's most hilarious to me |

It's been running for two days straight. The fan comes on once in a while, but that's no big deal.
I'm also using my PeeCee gaming rig - that's doing the bulk of the work, but as soon as the dual 2.5's get in supply, I'll use that and give my iBook a rest. |

it takes a day or two for most machines to turn in units. it's fun once you fold for a bit, see where you're moving in the rankings. anyway, folding is a great way to have your computer do something worthwhile with its extra CPU cycles, and the most Mac users we have, the more the Stanford group will work to write mac specific engines.

And on to the next protein I go... 11% done with that one already and I've had not much free cycles available today.
